And some people earn their money by other ways than wrenching and they might buy their tools for some other reason (wrench on their own machines for fun and relaxation for example). Those people have no need for their tools "to earn their keep" or infact earn anything. So, their tools get used but obviously not so much as the pros. By keeping their tools in top condition they might last for a lifetime - and more. In the mean time they happen to look great clean, if somebody has a problem with that is only his problem.

Here's how I look at it. When I was 23, I had "beaters". Never paid over $500 for any of them. They got the life beaten out of them. I drove them into snowbanks. Never changed the oil. Parked them in the first spot at the mall and didn't care about door dings. But then I got a better job, and starting to build a little wealth. Once I had things in order, I bought a nicer car. And I take care of it a lot better then I did the "beaters". Why? Because I had more invested into it, and as such just took better care of it.

Some folks take care of (and take pride in) their tools and don't like beating them up just because they "use them".

Tell us about your garage dog buddy. He looks very content to guard "his" tool chests. I miss my dog.

A local large paving company always has beautifully maintained, clean, dent free dump trucks, tractor-trailers and pickups. I once had the chance to speak with the former owner. He said he and his business partner early on discovered that their workers took far better care of the vehicles if they looked good. If a vehicle got dented, it was immediately repaired and repainted. The trucks lasted longer, advertised their company better, and gave the workers pride in their equipment and company.

Recently I spoke with a worker from the same company. He said when the company buys a new truck, they issue it to one employee who is responsible for it, and also give that employee the ability to customize the truck with up to $2000 of accessories, whatever the worker wants. Wow.

THAT is how to run a successful company, by caring about the workers, the equipment, having pride, and a long term view.

I wrench for a hobby. My tools will last my lifetime, and farther. I'm still using tools used by my dear departed Dad. And I keep my tools clean.

Is this at the audio shop that you did some for and had another thread for it as well?

Looks real nice!:thumbup::beer:

Here is my Snap-on Classic 96, just got it a couple months ago (start of January), and am filling it slowly, but surely. I'm a 20 year old autobody apprentice, been doing it for a year and a half, and loving it. No drawer pics right now, but only about half the drawers are full at the moment. Also, a side-by-side the day I got it with my old box (The power was out, so it's a dark picture). Definitely over twice the room in the Snap-On.

Is it just me or does it appear that most of the big dollar Snap On boxes are filled with big dollar Snap on tools that look they have never been touched by human hands never mind been worked to earn their keep? My boxes and tools look well worn because I actually use mine rather than just polish them to show them off.

Its just you. I don't buy Snap-On stuff just to look at it, I buy it to use the hell out of it!

Eyeball my stuff. It is clean and well-used.

I've been considering the foam liners that I've seen cut to shape for my wrenches, but it seems like a pain in the ****.

Picked up one of the gloss side cabinets for the HF 41" roller and stuck it on my 56".

Also stripped down the hutch so I can prime/paint it to match.

What's in the locker for now - all the clearance shop towels from Home Depot.

Sweet. Those towels are nice, and I use them all the time. Wish I had a WHOLE LOCKER full of them.

:rocker:

How is the locker, quality-wise? Been thinking about picking one up.

Quality-wise, it's nice.

My only complaint is that I HAVE to lock it to keep the door closed.

This is a common complaint with these lockers and is easily fixed with a magnetic catch. Why this wasn't a stock feature is beyond me. It's not like adding a magnetic catch would push this thing past the intended price point.

*shrugs

Honestly, I like it enough that I'm going to get a 2nd locker for the right side of the cabinet. I plan to place one of the Bose 201s on each of the lockers and use the lockers for bulk storage at the new pad.

I have yet to find anything to put into the drawers in the locker, but with time that'll come. For now I'm happy to get things that much more consolidated for the move.

That's funny. A $300 dollar cabinet to hold $15 worth of paper towels.

:spit: I see the sarcasm there. :D (they're only $200 BTW)

But yeah, that's how it is for now. They wouldn't be in there if it wasn't for the fact that we're moving soon. These have all been stored on shelving up to now. as I get down to a more reasonable amount of shop towels I plan to store woodworking tools in that locker. When I get the 2nd locker it'll have a lot of the tools that are in blow-molded cases stored in it.

Easily fixed. Get 10 of these (in red of course), bolt them to the left outer wall of your locker, install paper towel rolls and then put your woodworking tools inside. Voilà, problem solved! ;)

I´m VERY tempted to get 2 KRA5012, but $1500 a piece is a little much, but the locker you bought seems to do the job I´m after just fine.

How is it connected to your box?

I've got one magnetic towel holder that stays on the 60gal compressor tank. It's a spot that's accessible yet out of the way enough that I won't bump into it and knock it down.

You know, for $200 each I can't complain about these lockers. Shoot, I'll have $1100 in the 56" roller and two lockers. Not bad for a home shop. The lack of a magnetic catch to keep the door closed when unlocked is BS, but it's an easy fix.

The locker hangs on the the lip of the 56" (one long bracket with three U-shaped tangs - for the lack of a better word - that and comes with two bolts to bolt it to the 41" at the bottom of the 41" cabinet. These holes aren't on the 56" so I'll have to mark/drill/bolt those two holes. Will likely do that today.

The sheet that came with the locker puts weight capacity of each of the two drawers at 59lbs and each shelf at 44lbs. There's one shelf above the drawers and one that you can set at whatever height you wish. You can call the HF 800 number and get additional shelves if you like. I might do that after the move.

Anyway, hope the weight capacity info helps.

The weight capacity will do just fine. I´m just going to store some tools in blowmold cases, some Snap-on wipes & WD40 etc. Too bad that we don´t have HF here in Sweden. But I will have a look around for those lockers!

thanks for the info! :)

No HF, but you DO have Swedish women. :rocker:

Oh, I just got ready to drill the holes and bolt the locker at the bottom. There are no holes in the locker for this like the instructions state. I'm still going to bolt it before the move.

Again a even better fix: no need for actual weak magnetic catch. Just install 25 max size neodymium magnets and I'll guarantee it wont open by itself (or at all). And all this for only few bucks! :D

And, you can also attach the locker to the cabinet without any holes using these magnets :eyecrazy: And your tools to the locker

Are the shop towels still on clearance? I could certainly use some more. How long ago did you purchase and how much?

Why do Americans call then a hutch? I've always known them as risers

A hutch is more full height, and you can sort of work under/inside it. A riser is shorter and IMO just so you can have junk in front of the upper box and still (usually) open the bottom drawer of the top box (and get a bit of under box loose storage.)

Negative. According to Snap On, they are called risers. I always thought that it was a "tomato" or "to-mah-to" thing. Different words for the same thing.
But... it would be completely GJ to make up different definitions for the same thing.

All I know is my hutch is tall enough that, at 6'1", I can wear boots and not hit my head on it. I built to to holds tools and wall up the 1/2" MDF top I'm using as a workbench on my roller.

It's red, but I'm unsure if its tomayto or tamahto. :lol_hitti

From what I've seen in here a roll cab with riser/hutch looks like enough height to work in. In my head im picturing KRL1022 with riser since thats what I'm looking at getting
