RE: permits, check what the specific language is, but permits can have clauses such as 'expires X days after last significant work took place'.

so you might be in the clear even beyond a year

Nothing will be able to huff and puff and blow that place down. I like the 'phase' concept. At least you can get something usable while you wait for the cash for the next phase.

Awesome cars too!!

finally got all my leaves raked, got back to the garage this sunday

first I needed to build a platform to stand on. The purlins just are not strong in any direction but down. I lag screwed 4x4's to the ends of half sheet 3/4 plywood. when I put them up they bent the purlins down the slope. I sistered in a pair of 2x6x12feet long at each of the two middle spans, the top metal span was doubled up so it was strong enough. this way I can slide my platform over as I work, then just move the sistered 2x6's to the next span as I slide the platform down

next I laid my extension ladder down as a ramp and pulled the first sheet up with a rope, the clamp made a good hook to hold it up while I ran around and tied off the rope so it wouldnt slide back down

I spent the rest of the day making a drill fixture. This will make sure the screws all line up and always hit the center of the purlin. couple iterations to make it work. first I started with only the drill diameter but then I had to drill seperate. I got tired of shwitching drill and driver right away, I resized the holes to fit loose on the screw head flange then I could just drive the screw through the hole. by the end I cut off the tail on the right side as it was hitting my platform, then I wrapped the whole thing in tape to protect the finish

things I learned and still need to incorporate:

1. I am going to buy a nut driver and cut off the driver for the drill. I am using a 1/4 drive extension and socket but it peels the socket off half the time when I pull the tool out of the fixture hole. Most times it then slides very nicely down the 4/12 pitch and to the ground

2. run screws from bottom to top. As I worked my way down the chips just gathered as the slid down, these screws have a rubber washer and I had a lot of trouble keeping chips out from under them. I think I will also pull up an air line this weeked to blow them off before I seat the screw

3. drill through and stop the drill then restart to drive. this helps the dewalt clutch engage so it doesnt just strip the screw when it bottoms.

more to come....

Progress looks great. It is amazing how we learn easier methods of getting the job done. That jig works well. And a nutdriver is the way to go. They have tehm at HF. I thought I heard you every time it slid down...

There is some mores screws needed on the left to go in with the fascia, right?

rrrrrrrr...pliunk, socket sliding down metal roof then hitting the ground. you might have heard me a dozen times. there is a wrap around piece that will screw through these. I can get the edge with a ladder from the side so I didnt put any screws in there until I see how the side trims mount.

Im going to cut a craftman driver. im afraid the HF will wear and knick the paint on the screw heads. Its about a 1000 screws total

got some more done this weekend, lots of screws...... with fingers crossed Ill say I have not missed a single screw. takes a little time to keep moving the drill fixture but it hits center of the purlins every time.

got 4 more sheets on this sunday. missed 3 screws though. Need to work out how to seal those, bummer. I think I will just use a peice of scrap underneath to ppull it tight. My fixture wouldnt work on the first sheet of the day because they edge of it exactly matched up with the purlin tie plates on the i-beam so my fixture wouldnt fit. One happened because I tried to put a second screw in the same hole. that ones I will need to do somthing different. Definitely starting to get the man cave look with the roof closing in.

Last 2 panels are on the roof. I still need to caulk and drive about 14 screws. I almost slid off the roof since I dont have my wood stage anymore. I am trying to figure the safest way to finish it up. I may just use a ladder from the side rather than get back up on the metal. Still need to figure out how to finish the face and corners on the low side. They come in on the side at 4:12 pitch then the face is at 90 degrees to the ground. Id like to wrap the corner but the angles wont allow the flanges to come around. Then I need to finish the side, Im thinking either aluminum fascia or to try to get another galv channel similar to the way they fiished it on the high side.

Lookin' Good, Lutz. Good timing to get it almost dried in. And you have noticed that working yourself into a corner can be slippery. Be Careful! We don't need you to play shopnut around here.

I see what you mean with the fascia issues. That may take a piece of extra material in a sheet metal break to get the angle you need. Not sure what pieces you have to work with for the fascia trim, but sheet metal is easy to work with.

after a couple weeks of planning and laying out Im getting ready to move forward with paint. Here is a thread talking about paint here and with the airline in location and type figured out from a post here I can go ahead with the paint. I am also laying out the floorplan so I can figure out air drops and electrical drops. Still a ton to do, Im now going to need a second floor in this portion for storage

Looks good ! Smart way to build in stages.
On post 52 , 53, talking about your dewalt tool, is that a battery drill with chuck ? I'm not sure what yours is but I bought this 1/4'' hex bit chuck impact driver. It's awesome . It has better balance than a drill. It may really help for later. If you were a 1200 miles closer I would bring it over.

yes its a Dewalt 18V hammer drill XRP. Ive been really impressed with it.

I have been off the garge project for 6 weeks, had to do some moving and family stuff.

I finally got back to it this weekend, I painted yesterday, I bought 6 gallons of primer and it sucked in in so much im way short, and 6 gals was supposed to do two coats, I recalculated and realized I told the guy the wrong measurements. I will be at Sherwin Williams bright and early tomorrow. The white primer is great, its like I flipped on a light switch inside. I will get pictures after the first coat of primer is done tomorrow

I'll agree with the Dewalt impact driver. I think it's my favorite tool in the garage and most used.

When do you think that you'll start the second stage of your build ?

I just sold my Jeep to help replenish the garage fund. I am now doing battle with the architect who is intent on telling me what I want instead of listening to what I want

Is that block filler ? Or paint for block ? When I worked at new construction
they used block filler first and then paint. The block filler sure looked like the same sh** to me. It was all white. It could be a selling gimmick. You can't
beat WHITE for brightness. Looks like you rolled it too. Same at the school, No spraying ! Are you gonna put in a exhaust fan ? For air movement.

Great to see the interior shots with the roof finished. Its nice to see the progress continue.

For the architect, remind him who is paying for the project as well as his fees. Unless it is a code issue, the owner should get what he wants.

It is Sherwin Williams master prep I will top coat it with Sherwin Williams A-100 gloss white, Im too cheap to buy the sprayer to put the paint on, plus they said I will have to roll it to push the paint in anyway so I didnt want to mess with the overspray and cost then have to roll it anyway

He designed a 7 foot door on one end, I want it increased to 8. He said he would do it but then stopped taking my calls, its very frustrating. Its been about 3 months since he agreed to do it. I sent a check but they didnt cash it. Not sure whats going on. Im going to appeal to the metal roof company, they hired the guy in the first place.

Looking good! I love the idea of breaking the build down into phases. Keeps costs spread over time but gives you something to work with sooner. Great idea.

I used to live in Lutz, too. Small world. Just off of Van ****, North Dale Mabry-ish.
