Torsion Bar Door Opener

I'm converting from Springs and Cable to a Jackshaft tensioner. I cannot find a source on the internet for the iron bar that the Tension springs attach to. Can anyone supply me with a source? Thanks, Al W.

It isn't anything special.
Just a length of round bar stock.
You would better off at a local steel supply store.
Shipping from an online sorce will kill you.

I think you're talking about the shaft that mounts over the top of the door and the springs and pulleys mount to the shaft? If so, I have 3 doors with that set-up and they all have a hollow shaft. Looks more like a piece of pipe only with a smooth finish. They are 1" OD and 3/4" ID. Solid round bar stock is not necessary. BTW, 2 of my doors are 10' high commercial doors with BIG springs.

Thanks Don, I'm thinking that regular Black Pipe from the local plumbing supply will work if the demensions are correct. Al W.

I dont know much about door openers, but do know a lot about steel.

Typical generic black pipe is not made to withstand any sort of mechanical load. It could be virtually any crappy brittle steel. Also 1" pipe will not be 1" OD...it will be larger and probably an oddball size.

Go to a steel yard and buy a piece of 1" OD x .120 wall 1010 HREW tubing. It's common stuff and shouldnt cost more than about $1.50/ft. You may have to buy a $20 stick though.

You need a piece that will resist the twisting or torsion load. Black iron pipe is not suited for that and will be dangerous if installed. How about sourcing from a garage door supply company?

Just stopped by to finish this Thread. First I bought a piece of pipe from the local Iron works. 1" turned out to be 1.065! Took it back and got a piece of Cold Rolled solid that was .985 True Dem.. Installed it all with the Wayne Dalton 3800C and it works great. A little of this and that but otherwise a straight away installation. Thanks to all who offered up help and opinions. Al W.
