Well it's easier to flip through on the throne than looking at this site via a laptop.:)

For $5 I think I want to check it out, how many pages are there?

I think some guys on here can be featured that magazine.. but the bigger stuff like Leno's will be cool to read about.

I wish them the best of luck but I've seen many of these magazines do an issue or two and then disappear. The nicest garage magazine I've seen is Garage Life out of Japan....see http://www.garagelife.jp/

Very Architectural Digest like - nice photos on heavy paper. Unfortunately most of the print is in Japanese and the magazine (by Neko publishing) is difficult to find here in the states. SD

UltGar you don't read Japanese!? :bounce: Very nice magazine it looks. Then again the Japanese really tend to over-do just about everything and magazines are no exception. I have a stack of Drift Tengoku, Option, Battle Mag (BM), Rev, etc in my collection and they are all small novels compared to what gets published in the US. Not to mention they all have these really weird "1-900" type ads in the back as well as ads for off the wall stuff. Love the Japanese!

83 pages for those that asked.

I picked it up at my local Hastings. It's a music/dvd/book store.

That garage on the front cover is commonly referred to as a "monitor barn" construction style. I'm planning on doing a 40'W x 36'D version of this style to replace our old horse barn in a couple of years. I don't think it is very practical for a garage style though because normally there are support posts holding the center loft section up (for hay storage above). They sure do look nice though.

The problem is that it is a "condensed" monitor style - typically the upper walls would bear on walls for the stalls on either side below and the upper bay would be wider like this:

I just picked up a copy of Garage Style at the Borders closest to the dealership over lunch. They had about 10 copies on the rack. If anyone really really wants a copy bad enough I don't mind picking up a couple extras and mailing them out. Just keep in mind cost of mag, shipping (media mail) and a mailer envelope might have you paying $10 for the magazine.

Be careful with start up magazines. In 20004 I paid for a 2 year subscription for a new Chevy truck mag called MCT TRucks from Enthusiast World. I only received 2 issues (both of which were ****). When I went to their web site to check, it had dissapeared.

That didn't last long, did it? But that Japanese magazine Garage Life looks fantastic, even if I can't read it. I just called the Tattered Cover bookstore in Denver and they will be carrying it, they thought in about a month. It was offered to them recently by one of their foreign magazine distributors, so it may mean that it's going to go into wider circulation. I'll post the info here whenever I get it, so if you have an interest subscribe to this thread.

Hmmm... It was up yesterday when I looked. My guess is that they exceeded their traffic allowance on the site once it hit the newstands and people started checking it out.

Haven't had time to sit down and read much of it, but it looks like a fairly decent magazine.

By the way, a search for "Garage Style Magazine" on Google lists this thread in the number two spot - the (defunct) website is first followed by Garage Magazine.

Judging by the backers/eic/etc of the magazine I wouldn't say it disappeared. I'm sure they went over their allotted web space or just got so much traffic it killed it. I'm not sure what sort of stats we get on our website but having a nationally published rag requires alot of bandwidth. I also know they were in process of upgrading the site so it might just be down for fresh uploads, etc.

Let me know if Garage Life gets picked up in Denver. I thought about having some friends bring me some over but it gets to be a hassle to just get one or two issues of magazines that way.

I looked it over. Interesting, but something tells me that it will draw more of a crowd into exotic high end cars, foreign makes and the like. I think more of a Jay Lenno audience likely. Worse, I saw no mention of TOOLS AND WORKING WITH THEM, OR FABRICATION ETC.without those topics I really do not see myself visiting much. But then everyone has now seen the little hole in the wall I operate out of now and I cannot imagine many beyond some with spaces and old tools in like condition to my own would be very intersted in seeing stuff like that now would they. :spit:

As mentioned, I picked up a copy and have been reading through it.

Overall, it is a very nice magazine. Well laid out and nice detail. The garages do tend more towards the "showpiece" end of the spectrum than the "working" end of the spectrum - despite a few of the owners profiled making sure to point out that they are, in fact, "working" garages... :) I guess that does come down to a certain element of personal definitions, though.

I know some will say I'm being petty, but the one thing that I find that I'm having trouble with about the magazine is the writing. As stylish and classy as everything about the magazine is, the writing itself could use some work. Quite a few run-sentences, misused words, awkward phrasing, that sort of thing...

Understand that my mother was an English teacher and I've published stuff myself, so I probably have somewhat higher standards than average. I guess I'd expect it a bit more out of your typical newsstand rags (and you do see it there). But with the quality that the magazine is showing in everything else about it - garages profiled, advertisers, layout, etc. - you'd think the writing would be top notch as well. The deficiency detracts from the rest of the quality.

Just my $0.02...

Their website seems to be coming along, but the biggest problem is the inconsistency of the issues. It is quarterly, but Summer 2008 got skipped. For some reason I was just thinking about it this morning, but my first thought was wondering if I missed any issues...

I picked up the recent issue....its nice ant I agree the writing isn't the best; the editor missed some other things also. & it does lean to the millionaire reader. I didn't see anything that interested me enough to emulate in my garage.

Next issue, I'll probably just sit down in the coffee shop section of Books'a'Million and peruse it - don't think I'll buy another issue unless there's a particular thing that I could make work in my garage.

Oh, I also tried to subscribe online & never heard back from them - glad I didn't now.

Greetings! My apologies for having been out of touch, "undeliverable," and simply gone for the past several weeks. Months? I had a moment this evening to pop up here and reconnect with you folks and read some of what you've had to say about GSM, and garages in general, and appreciate all the feedback.

Our website is undergoing another redesign, and hopefully now, we'll be better able to keep it updated quarter to quarter. And, because quite a number of people are interested in seeing "regular Joe" garages and fewer showroom style garages, we're aiming to satisfy those requests. Issue Four is finishing up at the presses now, and is pretty slick, if I do say so myself. Issue Five will begin a return to normal, but will also mark our one-year anniversary, and feature a special cover and some interesting twists.

It's a funny thing publishing a quarterly magazine about garages. The breadth of the topic is overwhelming to say the least, and exciting beyond measure. I can honestly say that I've never been happier - the people I've met, the conversations held, and the garages seen are lifetime opportunities. The money is thin, but you know - it's not all about the money. We're working hard to find a balance between this and that and honor the requests we receive from those who enjoy the magazine. And, it's tough, because we span so many walks of life. Our goal is simple - show people what's been done, and what can be done through images, information, and products. I'm hoping it's something enjoyable, informative, and different. And remember - just because a garage is big, doesn't mean that look can't be done on a smaller scale.

As I said above, our fourth issue is nearly done at the printers (should be on stands somewhere around the 15th of February) and features a host of interesting spaces, including a small garage in New Jersey that's been well appointed, well maintained, and cherished for years. The owner keeps it nearly showroom, yet also rebuilds, restores, and maintains Volkswagens there. We've also had the joy of featuring a turn of the last century Buick showroom that's been restored and converted into a restaurant-night club. I hope you like it.

Distribution is a challenge. Subscriptions are easy - anyone who's had trouble subscribing, please visit the website and click in the subscribe link, which should take you to a page that will allow you to subscribe. If not, look for the 800 number. Again, my apologies to those who've had trouble with that link. Back to distribution. Two of the companies responsible for taking us to Borders, Hastings, and others have gone out of business, which will create a small, temporary complication in getting magazines to certain regional stores. I'm not exactly sure just yet which regions, but I have a feeling it's mostly the South Eastern part of the country. Again, this is temporary, and I'm sure the problem will be resolved quickly. There is little I can do about it as a publisher - I have to wait out the storm and see which distributors will take over the territories and begin working with them to get GSM to retailers in the area. Aside from this complication, we're working to expand our retail reach with a variety of stores around the nation, and beginning to look at distribution through Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, and military PXs.

If you need to get a hold of me for anything, and the mailboxes at the website are full, please email us on [email protected] and I will respond in time. I'm sure you've already figured out, I'm slow to respond - don't take it personally, I certainly don't mean it that way - there are just a lot of irons on the fire right now, and I can only do so much. We're not only publishing a magazine that's battling a fleeting economy, failing distributors, and a growing subscriber list with false ZIP codes, wrong addresses, and bad checks, but we're also looking at opening a Garage Style store through which we can sell garage products, and opening the door to take the Garage Style concept to television. I hope you'll like it!

So, for now, that's my spiel. I hope you'll all still enjoy and discuss the magazine, and press your retailers to order it - we're distributed through Warner International Distribution Services, and our subscriptions are through National Subscription Fullfillment Services in Anaheim, California. And, again, [email protected] can get me directly.

Thanks for being interested, and keeping in touch.
