I am looking for an "I" beam for my hoist.

I talked the local scrap yard into selling me a 6 foot chunk of 3" X 4" I-beam
Got the trolley from HF

A place to start looking for the chain fall?.. http://www.plumbersurplus.com/Prod/...hain-Hoist-25-ft-Standard-Lift/74364/Cat/1282

I only use the trolley on the shop side,...to load the "sawhorse work bench"
but on the automotive side, there are three 6"X6"X12' (three 2"X6"X12' nailed and glued)... spanning the garage floor..after initial installation (moving the wires, etc), they now stay in place

One set-up is 6 feet from the front wall, one set-up in the middle, and one set-up about 6 feet from the "closed garage door", (totally unusable if the door is open)
I then put the set of 8 foot floor jacks under what-ever span I need for the job

For ME....These have no problem with what I need to lift, (including lifting my scissor lift onto the trailer)

Is this a true I beam? or is it an H beam. A true I beam is known as a S beam or Standard beam, while an H beam is known as a W or Wide beam, for its very wide flanges.

How tall, how wide are the flanges, how thick is the middle web??? How long is it, what will be the distance between supports?

Trolleys and chain hoists are easy to find, just add money. Even "cheap" Chinese ones are expensive. Lifting and hoisting equipment, even from China is expensive, as everyone seems to respect the requirements for lifting equipment enough to make the stuff safe.

I've been hoping to find a used ½ to 1 ton trolley to put my air powered ½ ton chain hoist on, that way I can keep it and the 3 ton hand chain hoist both ready to use all the time on my portable gantry crane.
