Hey guys,

Need some help with an old jack that was my great grandpa's. I'm in the process of rebuilding a Walker Hydraulic Jack No. 784 Series E. I picked up a rebuild kit from Black Hawk Parts...

Anyway, I got everything apart that's necessary to pull the frame off in order to get the pump out, except the DANG wheels! I feel like it's so silly and probably so simple to remove but I really have no clue, and I don't want to bust it...There are two notches in each wheel on opposite sides, as shown in the pic. I thought maybe a cotter pin would be going through, but that is def not the case here. Does anybody know exactly how to remove the wheels on this jack?

Also, does anyone have an idea of roughly what year this jack could be?

Thanks a ton!
Jason

Its just a Dust Cap, Its Pressed in and been there since the 40's. If you dont have the Tool, Try tapping it with a Hammer from side to side or using a Adjustable Plier try and Rotate it a bit to loosen it up.

Hiball,

Thanks for the reply! I wasn't sure because I was trying to spin the cap with some alligator pliers and she was not budging at all! What tool is used to take these caps off?

Also, anything you recommend when rebuilding this? Originally what was happening was when I tried to jack her up, it leaked hydraulic fluid out the pump and wouldn't jack up any further, figure some seals went...

I don't have the manual for it or anything and I know your the man when it comes to jacks!

Thanks!

For Future Reference... I sell Rebuild Kit also and Unlike blackhawkparts, Im Not interested in Just selling you a Kit. I make sure your Questions are Answered and you have the knowledge to complete your task. I Can and Will Provide you with Exploded View Diagram if you send me your Email via PM. Also for anyone else Reading this thread interested in Restoring a Older Jack similar to this one, Make sure you Tear the Jack down prior to ordering a kit as you really never know what the Inside Condition is gonna be like. Obviously We can see that the Jack has a substantial amount of Exterior Rust, Lets Hope the Inside is Rebuildable.

Dust cover Tool... This is just a picture to show what the tool looks like. Obviously.. The tool Linked wont work in your application because the wheel diameter is much smaller on your jack, versus a full size Tire.

Okay guys, and Hiball:thumb up:

I need assistance here with the pump jack. As you can see this is what I pulled out so far. The 3 seals on the ram were cut, not sure if it's supposed to be like that when assembling?

How do I remove the ram? Does the slotted nut thats connected to the housing come off as well? I tried spinning that with some channel locks and no luck so far...

How is the pump link removed?

Other than that, everything else seems okay. The only other concern I have is I just want to make sure that the pump housing is NOT supposed to be perfectly round. I attached a photo for that as well.

Just want to get some advice here...don't want to mess things up...

Thanks.

The Older ones did use Split Packing, The Reservoir isnt suppost to be perfectly round (<-- Flat on bottom), On that particular model if you look inside where the packing ware removed you will see a Washer with 2 slots. This Washer will generally spin out, Unfortunately it appears the spanner groves are dinged up a bit so you might encounter some issues when the washer gets there. As far as removing the Release.. You need to pull that packing out, There is a couple thick washers on the backside and it wont pull straight out. Oh.. You will never be able to remove that Spanner tank nut with a set of Channelocks.

Thanks Hiball, appreciate the help.

Should the ram def be removed? How else can I attempt to remove the spanner tank nut?

Yes.. You will either have to remove the Tank nut or Unthread that inner washer, Either will get you where you need to be.

Okay, got it.

Im thinking removing the inner washer is my best bet right now. Any pointers on removing it? I see the 2 slots on the inner washer. Maybe I can get something to fit the slots to unthread it out?

Appreciate the help Hiball!

You can try taking 2 pin punches and Vice gripping them to a piece of flat stock, Obviously retracting the ram back into the cylinder will aid in removing it. I dont ever recommend not using the correct tool, But unfortunately the Correct tool is No longer available. If you absolutely need to loosen the washer, You can try tapping it with a Pin punch to get it started.

I gotcha, thanks Hiball. How about using some heat to aid in removing the tank nut? Just a thought, but I can also understand how this can be risky.

I would try to remove the Inner washer first... Its hands down gonna be easier versus the Nut and should allow the Ram to come out and there will be a gap between the cylinder and reservoir which will allow you to clean the inside.

Hiball,

Got the inner washer out and cleaned things up. All looks good, except I think I may have damaged the u-cup that the screened nut tightens down to on the ram. It is a very tight fit, would you by any chance have one available, and how much would it be?

Also, I tried using the hand impact tool to remove the safety valves and no go. They are extremely tight! It's dinging up the flat head...do these have to be replaced, or can I get away with it?

Thanks.

Hello Hiball !

Before my computor crashed and burned
I was told you are the go to guy when it comes to Walker jacks, I could sure use some advice.
I have a Walker Roll a Car from the late 20's early 30's. It's a monster and as I get older this thing is getting heavier.
It is a Walker 770 " A ", when I disassembled it 3 years ago I was not conserned that I could not get parts, I was wrong.
I have been trying to find parts but I also but I need a idea how to properly install the parts when I find them. Also there are two small steel ball bearing that go in the valve and reservior from the top of the jack I want to be sure they are where they are suppose to be. I will try to send picts later
Thank you in advance
