What is good size for pitch for second floor

I have built 24x28,second floor attic,what is a good pitch for roof so that i can walk around,span is 24,if i go 8/12 pitch,i will have 8 feet in center,or should i build a knee wall and 5/12 pitch,any help is greatfull.

I guess you'd have to tell us the height of the side walls. Or is that the question?

It is a pain but I like to do 12/12 pitch and have the upper Room built into the Trusses so you can just set them and be done. If you use Snap-Lock Hidden Fastener Metal for your Roofing then you can lash 2 ladders together at the top and work off of them one piece of metal at a time.

You could also do a Gambrel Roof and really gain some space up above. Real PITA to roof though.


Not sure if you have the second floor floor done or not. Need more information.

If you are going to be using the space for anything more than storage you will want to do as aggressive pitch as you can. Do you have a height restriction? Rockchucker makes a good case with having the room built in the trusses, this will also give you a clear span below with out the need for a beam in the garage.

I only have 7/12 on my garage but I had 2' added to the heels of the truss to increase my overall height. I'm 8' 1" in the middle sloping to 6' on the sides. 14' wide in the middle of a 30' span truss.

I went through this decision process a couple of years ago. The price difference between an attic with a knee wall and a full second story is relatively small. I went with the full second story.

A builder-friend of mine wisely stated about the houses he builds for people; People complain about it being too small. People complain about it being too expensive. But, nobody complains about it being too big.

I didn't want to deal with the height of a full second story or I would have gone that way. My "storage trusses" cost me about $1000 extra as compared to regular trusses.

We didn't know what to do to break up the giant ugly wall out front, so we put a deck there. There is a link to my build thread in my signature. Moving slowly, but at least it's moving. . .

Nothing beats a full 2 story... otherwise lots of wasted space and headbanging on the slopes. This space is the cheapest to obtain.
Imagine a 6 car garage...
now imagine a 6 car garage with a full 2nd story... (wood shop... metal shop... both... storage...)
hmmm... tough choice.
walls and another level of joists are cheap in the overall cost.

OP - the details of how this roof are supported are important. Depending on the structural layout the placement of a knee wall could have implications.

Does it have a ridge beam down the center?

If you do not want a two story look at the front, do what I did. Do a 12/12 pitch. At the back wall go up with an 8 foot wall. Front half has the 12/12 pitch and looks like a one story building. Back half is a full dormer with a 4/12 pitch. With a 24 foot deep x 24 foor wide building you can have a 16 foot deep x 24 foot wide room upstairs with an 8 foot cieling. Of course in your building is 30 x 30 like mine, you can have a 20 x 30 room upstairs with 8 foor ceiling. Mine was all truss construction. Local lumber yard has design software to do most anything.
