Man you rock! I am very impressed with your ambitious project. You obviously know your way around body work. I'm hooked. I had a slick up 'till a few months ago. Just couldn't fit it in with my othe project, etc. It wasn't as nice as yours to start with. Good luck and keep 'em coming.

Backyard Body guy but I get by . .

OK, you were already my hero with this project... but when I heard of all the jun- er, goodies you wanted to keep and your solution to the move, it made me wonder if I had a brother I didn't know about!

You are, as the kids say, the man! Rock on, bro:beer::rocker:

It was amazing how that worked out with the Semi. I was bound and determined to find a way to not have to spend big $$ to move.

I had a 66 back in the day and it's always been my dream to do what your doing. I'll be watching and learning. Thanks for sharing this great experience.

Neal

Gotta love the '65 '66 Trucks. I will post up some pics of the "other" 3 Slicks.

Later in evening last night was able to push cab outside and strip some paint as did not want no surprises in the end.

A couple other random shots. Frame waiting for assy, the HUGE HVAC box.

Cab is actually in quite good condition with minimal body work prior to paint. These trucks do not have perfect alignment to cab, doors, front clip but I may do some cutting and tweaking if I have to.

To those interested in the Slicks '65 '66 Trucks here are a few shots of the others I have.

The Tahoe Turquoise truck is a very rare one being a F250 "RANGER" a factory bucket seat truck and one of 3 or 4 known to exist.

The Green/White truck is a unrestored Original. I freshened up underhood but the body/paint/trim/interior is still original.

Love! Nice job so far!

Wow.. This is probably one of the coolest builds I have seen in a while..

itsmike, Welcome to Garage Journal!

Thanks All!

Just got back from my local Ford dealer a bit ago with a few more pieces for next step on this project.

The Traction Loc unit came in as did the sheet metal pieces to tie in the 2011-12 firewall to my '66 cab. FoMoCo has had all the pieces in stock so far and shipping has been very fast, fair pricing too.

Should have all the pieces needed to assemble the rear axle unit.

Since this is a performance/economy build but leaning more on economy I am sticking with the 3.15 rear gears in the 9.75 axle. Just adding the Traction Loc (in case I need it LOL)

Once I get it up and running I will be adding a tune from Livernois Motorsports in Dearborn Heights, MI that should give 360 RWHP & 431 RWTQ. Gains at top of over 100hp & 100 lb tq. Better mileage too!

More pics soon.

awesome build!

Thanks!

New panels from FoMoCo. These are what the dash bolts to and its also spotted to firewall. Floor is also trimmed for fit, prob have to trim more but need a initial trial fit.

Now I need to get cab hung over frame, locate floor, firewall and side panels then spot together, make cab mounts, weld up back of cab opening that was stretched.

Testing: 9:21 PM

New 33 Spline traction loc showed as did the rear brake backing plate kits which include the 9" Parking Brake assy. Check out the S I Z E of those rear rotors. That should give me real BRAKES! Now I am not sure if I want to stab the brakes or throttle first . . . LOL!

Looks like a lot of fun, just wondering why you didn't go for a low mileage used axle you could have saved a lot of $$$ and work. I just replaced a housing and everything in it on a 2007 Mustang under warranty and just parts alone were $1500+, if it had been cash it would have been even more.
I am glad to see that the parts guy ordered you a built carrier and loaded backing plates.
Keep it up I can't wait to see the finished product.

Oh and hold off on your tune until you have it ready to go because I'm sure they'll have a better one by then. I used to live a few miles from Livernois, they blew up a few motors :) looking for the most HP, I think they got to 550 or so on stock motors before they were letting go. Check them out on youtube.

This is awesome, I wish you the best of luck and will eagerly be awaiting updates in this thread. My father has a 62 unibody that he's been trying to decide what to replace the y-block with. I don't think he'd go this route though.

I was also going to post to contact Livernois if you need any help, they might able to help disable some of the unneeded functionality. Just for fun, here's a video of their tune v. a stock truck.

I can't wait to see the grafting of the new with the old.

Me too! LOL

I actually did find a few complete (or so I thought) rear axle assemblies.
Ordered one from LKQ (it was a 3.31 vs the 3.15 I needed) a used assembly is 1250-1600.00 They forgot to mention they cut off the shocks, ebrake cables and remove all brakes, Ebrake assembly, they cut the U-Bolts so the only thing you get is a housing with axles and a open diff for 1250-1600.00
A new housing with axles is not much more than 1/2 of that. Then knowone had a 3.15 axle its out of a WRECKED vehicle. It was far cheaper to just go with a new housing and axles as they JUNK YARDS make them pretty worthless in the way they are removed. Be the last time I try to business with LKQ! They said leaving brakes is a S A F E T Y issue . . . Typical dreamers on the pricing. I was super surprised I could do brand new for less than a junk used unit. This way I also have a brand new Limited Slip Too! New housing comes with a cover, bolts and new axle brgs already pressed in.

LOL!

Where did you find such a great deal on that totaled f150? I'm assuming you paid less than 3400?

my high winning bid was 3250.00. Online auction where my highest bid would have been 4400.00 I guess the next guy bid 3200.00 so my 3250.00 bought it! I did have to pay some sales tax on that amt plus gas money to go fetch it etc. A smokin' Deal for sure. I did bid on half a dozen prior but they were selling for 7k & up. I really wanted one with XLT convenience package, column shift, 4x2, 3.15 gear, roll over or hit in rear so got real lucky to find pretty much exactly what I wanted. I would have preferred the black interior or even tan over the gray. I will have to chop down the seats to make them fit so can re-upholster them at that time unless I find other seats that will work.

I plan on selling off some parts soon that are not needed and am hoping to re-coup most of my 3250.00.

Love the build and I am lusting after the three pickups, especially the F250 Ranger- awesome!

You do some Nice work!

Thanks!

Right now am trying to keep time and costs down but yet have a nice ride when complete. My time for Fab work will be happening real soon. Some of this stuff is easier and cheap to buy and quicker in the end like the side (kick panel sheet metal) It will help me get things in proper alignment too.

The stock firewall is a biggie not just because of the quiet steel but for mounting HVAC, Power Brake Booster and column Brg. Will fab the rest.

WOW! 100 posts and over 10,000 views in under a week. Thanks to all for your interest!

If any specific requests as to what people what to see just let me know. I know what I like to see in a post but hate to over picture everyone to death . . .

Can you post a picture of the factory buckets in the Ranger, please?

I just realized I do not have ANY recent pictures of the interior!

A couple from day I bought it 2~3yrs ago.

I was totally shocked when I pulled out the buckets and carpet at how nice it was inside. Wish the outside paint was that nice for sure!

The carpet was so dried out it was nearly powder on the floor. Not so bad on the carpet behind the seats.

This just gave me an idea I have never shot any video of this truck so now that I have a good 35mm Camera with video I will shoot some.

Interesting part with this LUCKY FIND Ranger is it was listed on craigslist for big bucks then the price dropped over a 2.5YR period. A single poor picture from a cell phone & a great distance away. I called the lady who turned out to be the original owner and asked her about rust & body and she was pretty insulted. I then asked if she could email me pics as the truck was approx 50 miles away from me. She said her grand daughter would email me some pics. When I saw a pic of a BUCKET SEAT I about dropped what ever I was doing and though naw, no such thing as a Bucket seat F250!

I called again and 1/2hr later was on my way to look at it. Ended up buying it for 900.00! She said it was parked because of a misfire and shop could not figure it out. Because she had a large camper on truck and towed a 27' trailer behind it she had added a more powerful GT engine. When I arrived I could tell it had been sitting for quite some time the california plate still on it. There was a piece of plywood in box and thought probably just to hide the dents. I asked if I could remove plywood.. Sure she said and much to my amazement it was there to protect the box. I went back home to get my car hauler with winch and the rest is history.

When I got home I started to check it out and found indeed the engine was a
1968 GT390! A friend needed a GT engine so sold it to him for 800.00 as a cam lobe had gone south the reason for the misfire. So I had this wonderful California RANGER for 100.00 and the trip to pick it up. It sat inside trailer for about a year then when I was moving my oldest daughter helped me get it running. She claims it as hers and just loves the truck. I was hoping to paint it the original color this summer if time allows. One of the best driving older vehicles I have ever owned. Video soon . . .

UPDATE: Daughter now drives it daily as her only vehicle.

That Ranger has an amazing bed. It appears to have had a camper shell on it, that along with the plywood did a good job of protecting things.

Too bad someone cut the dash for the aftermarket radio. ;)

My F-100 came out of North Dakota; it was pretty clean when I got it although it was nowhere near as nice as that one.

A bit bummed about the radio cut but an easy fix and the rest of truck is so nice the dash is easy to overlook.

This is an awesome thread. Excellent work!
Thanks!

Good Lord, this thread has so much stuff in it, I'm gonna need to take notes!

That's enough spot weld drilling right there to make me want to give up. :eyecrazy:

I'm drilling spot welds today, and it's one of my least favorite things.

Keep working and posting.......This must be your full time job?

Busy Hobby only on evenings and saturday's. Some time its hard to get anything done like today. I stay out late when everyone else goes to bed the only time for peace and quiet. Workshop is 100' plus from house so can still make a fair amt of noise and not bother anyone.

Nice work on your truck I've been following the progress. The seats look like they are out of 1967 Mustang.

FoMoCo used 1966 Mustang seats in the '66 F series Ranger's. Same seat as the '65 Mustang but different pattern's. An option on the Ranger was a console that ford borrowed from the Falcon. This truck came with no console.

Did not make much headway today as more head scratching then getting much actually accomplished. I was able to get cab set over the frame to check fit. Pics in a bit

Also took apart the original rear axle assy & will start assembly on the new unit next week.

Before I can get exact location for cab on frame need the chassis complete with engine, trans, rear axle installed. Trial fit today was to see how it all looked.

Those seats would probably kill your back on a long trip. I had a '66 that my grandfather bought new. It was an F-100 Camper Special custom cab. Yellow and white two tone. Bench seat.

Saturday is usually the day to get stuff done. Far too many sidetracks today but was able to get the new frame under the '66 cab now that the back of cab is modified to fit the frame.

Ride height will be approx 4" higher than what it is here. Not slammed but a few inches lower than stock. In order to compromise floor/interior height with the tall frame I had to have cab approx 2" higher on frame than I would have liked.

Actually they are pretty comfortable. At least on trips of a couple hours. Probably not so much on a 8hr ride.

Hurry up i NEED more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More on the way soon!

Total awesomeness!~

Thanks!

Hoping it turns out ok . . . Some day's I am not so sure where I left any skill I may have had. For sure the deepest I have been into a project. Trial and error method for me as no clue what I am doing at this point.

Because I need the engine, trans and all suspension in to really get cab in correct place I started on the rear axle today but all I got accomplished was another HUGE mess! The original housing was tweaked pretty bad even the pinion flange was off .016. Decided to test the run-out just in case and it was tweaked ever so slightly. Time to order another so I can finish it up. The shims for carrier side brgs look like they will also be a pain.

The axle assy was a bit tough to get apart because it was tweaked pretty bad.

You're doing an amazing job, and it's greatly appreciated that you're documenting and sharing this with us (and with such great pics to accompany!)

I've always liked the mid 60's Ford pick ups and I really like what you are doing with this one. I'm enjoying this ... A LOT!

Thanks for the encouragement!

An ambitous project that has obviously had plenty of planning and very similar but then very different to my own project http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10871&showall=1  to you for taking on and having such a great idea. Like many here we await progres and will enjoy all you post.

Problem is I did very little planning other then checking on possible wheelbase scenario's. Get both trucks apart and just see what fits and go from there. A big risk but some how some way plan to make a truck out of the two.

I've always liked the mid 60's Ford pick ups and I really like what you are doing with this one. I'm enjoying this ... A LOT!

THANKS! The '66 Ford trucks are my favorite older year but could just be dad bought one new. My '65 is really growing on me too.

Awesome build, Subscribed!

Tks!

All I can say is WoW! Just way over the top. Love the idea and lots of luck. It would be blowing my mind too, trying to keep it it all straight. Good luck.

Thanks! A bit of stress anxiety wondering how it will all work out but pushin' forward.

I hate fords but this is awesome, cant wait to see the finished product

TKS! In the beginning stages now so am sure it will get better as things move along. I have to keep thinking what the final product will be like to drive and look like just to keep me motivated.

Once the cab is mounted in its final place the rest will be down hill . . . (yeah, Right):lol::lol_hitti
