I figured i'd post my progress of my first vise restoration. I decided to restore a 6" Record. So far the vise has been completely torn down, media blasted, primed and painted. New jaw inserts installed and in the process of machining a new handle. The original handle is pretty straight, just figured I am putting this much effort in why not go all the way.

That tremclad is looking great on there. Can't wait to see the final pics.

Picked up a '79 Wiltomatic 4" jaw earlier this week. It will be going under the knife as soon as I finish my '79 Snap-On box!

Here are three big Parker 8" jaw vises. One #58 and two #60. I believe the rusted vise (#58)is the oldest followed by the red #60 then the grey one . They all weigh in ate 248#. Each is different. Look athr the name on the side. The oldest says "The Charles Parker Co. The red one " C. Parker with patent dates on both sides. The grey one has no patent dates. The handles are all different as well. Look at the ball end on the photo of all three. I also noticed that the screw locking yoke is different. The older version does not say parker and has recessed screws. The newer grey has bolts and says parker. I would have never guessed so many differences until I put them together. I wish I had a catalog on these but someone on fleebay paid 150.0 for a parker vise catalog this winter and that was too much for me. If anyone else has a better idea of dates or which is newer please let me know.
Thanks
Brad

P.S. My wife says buying vises is like being an alcoholic.... Nonsense, they can't sell their addiction when they are done. I can!!

Good God you have a ton of huge vises!! What do you plan on doing with all of them? If you plan on restoring them, do it quick before your whole house/property sinks completely underground with the weight of all that cast steel sitting on it.

Sorry I ran out of room for the pics. Another difference is the chin under the dynamic jaw. Look at pic 3, the older viseleft) has a squared off chin below and no extra lump hanging down. The gray and red vise have a curved chin and have a lump that hangs down about an inch and is the width of the chin piece. I do not have any smaller parkers to compare and see if they have this. I can't figure what it would be used for. Maybe handling the castig? Any ideas????

Reed is my favorite. I have lots. look at my previous posts to see some. I do not have a big 8"wilton. Never ran across one yet which is odd. The 6" and 4" are easy to find a deal on.

Unfortunately I have not taken many before or during pictures so here is one the day I picked it up and how it sits at the moment. I will update this thread once I have it all back together.

***The after picture shows light spots, I assure you the paint is even. There is about 10 coats of Tremclad on the vies.***

Over here Record is THE main name in vice's, there's masses of them.
I have three and a Woden which is as near as dammit a record as there same family making them if I remember right.
Yours looks good.

Hi everyone this is my first post. With the help of this forum, I was able to make a recent vise purchase. My first bullet...Not likely to be my last. I scored this one for $80 at a local pawn shop. He wanted a hundred. I was not sure if it was a good price until I looked around here.

It's a 4" model 101028, no swivel very good condition in my opinion. Will upload pics later.

Question: I'd like to use it to press out ujoints on PTO shafts. It appears to be solid enough an big enough to handle. Any comments?

Great vise, and $80 sounds like a very good deal, especially if it is in good shape. I think they are also called a Wilton 9400, with the 101028 being a part number for the main body. Autopts on the board is one of the real experts on older Wiltons, he might chime in. The older Wilton machinist vises definitely have some nice curves to them, as well as being extremely functional and durable!

Yea, you can probably use it as a press occasionally, but some members here will correctly tell you a vise is not a press, and really shouldn't really be used as one (but I still do :)

Here's my 9450 (4.5" jaws instead of 4" jaws), before and after a light restoration.

^^^^i have a 101028 and it was also my first Wilton bullet vise. Wasn't my last either. Just picked up a 1750. Very addicting these vises. But yes, the 101028 is a very stout vise. Great clamping force and very smooth. $80 is IMHO a great deal if it's in good shape. Congrats!

Thanks, I have always liked Records. I have a 6", 5" and a 4". Just chose the 6" to restore. When I picture a vise in my head I always think of a Record, dunno why everyone has a hard on for wiltons, personally I think there ugly. Haha.

Holy freakin' cow! I was looking for some pictures of the 101028 to see when they starting marking them as 9400's, and ran across this.

I know Wilton's go for crazy prices on eBay sometimes, and I haven't looked for a while, but this should make you feel good about picking one up for $80!

$370 for an older Wilton 4" machinist that needs some work?

Thanks for he comments. It's a 1970 build. The jaws still have some nice checkering, the handle is straight with the plastic bushings and it has a tight smooth action to it. I originally saw it a week before I bought it. Once I saw what they were going for, I HAD to have it. This makes up for a vise I bought on CL that I made a mistake buying. It had some damage I missed initially, but it was big and I HAD to have it. It was one of those old Polish dovetail vises.

Here is my collection of vises, from left, Columbian #63, Record #1, Mastercraft P.O.S. and my new addition, a Desmond Stephan 33S simplex. The Columbian and the Desmond will be getting stripped down and restored soon.

DSCN0279.jpg

I forgot to add, the only vise I paid any real money for was the ****** mastercraft from Canadian Tire before I knew better. Out of the other 3, the Columbian was free, the Record was free, and the Desmond cost $15.:rocker:

Here are my two vises. Both were my grandfathers.

Torco
Samson 5254

Just finished the Torco and I'm currently working on the Samson.

Anyone know anything about the Samson brand?

There isn't much info available on the Samson vises. Sears sold them in the 1910's and 20's. Yours appears to be a clone of a certain era of Rock Island vise from the late 1920's through 1930's. I suspect that's who made it. Here's a Samson ad from 1929, although it's kinda hard to read.

Honestly, I won't use a 4" 101028 bullet to press in U-joints but I guess if its cheap enough go for it . A bigger, cheaper USA Made Columbian might serve well and handle abuse would not be an issue either. Sometimes those caps have to be muscled in.

bl00.....your posts always draw me into the tread!

Prentiss 59 I got a few weeks ago. It is ironic this came from the estate of a very old blacksmith who dabbled in woodworking in his basement. I think this is from the 30's? maybe you Prentiss guys know. Was hard to find any info on this model #.

GREAT old Prentiss!

I would agree that it's of pre-1940's vintage, and possibly even 19- "teens".

That style was designed for sheet metalworking, with the heightened jaws.

What are your plans - clean up, restore lightly, total tear down and restore?

Dave, I think I will restore this one. Really like the black some of the Prentiss vises are painted on this thread. The only info I found on this vise was from an old ad where the manufacturer called it a woodworker vise. Thats why I thought it was ironic belonging to a blacksmith. I can see a sheet metal guy using this vise but I'm going to mount it on a wood working bench. roy

Found this today at an estate sale. I bought 4 items for a total of $3.00. I paid $.75 for it. Anyone know who made it? I found the number 17 stamped on it.

Nope, but you really don't want that, as it has the wrong screw for clamping it. I'll do you a favor and give you double your money for it, and dispose of it properly! :D

Picked up a Reed 403-1/2R today. solid mid size vise, about 45 lbs or so. Is there a way to get an approximate date this guy? anyone know? (My first Reed..)

Only two small Defects: A small chip from the underside the right side of the dynamic jaw, just under the bolt on jaw, and it missing the pin for the swiveling Static jaw. (someone beat in a carriage bolt! :eyecrazy: I got it pried out...)

Anyone know what size the pin is? Is it tapered?

Notice anything odd here? the jaws are in backwards so they are smooth!

Apparently they are made to do just that, as they are countersunk both ways? :dunno:

I believe the patent on that is from 1938, which is for the pin that holds the nut in place. It has a screw to take the slack out as the parts wear over the years. The last date of production should be 1938 + however long the patent was good for.

The flattened nose indicates a hardened steel screw and nut. Reed started using them in 1942.

Earlier Reeds had the jaws forged in place. The later ones had T-Shaped jaw inserts. I suspect yours were in between, but I don't know from what years.

Here's a catalog page I got from Demoman showing the parts. This should be the same as yours except the jaw inserts and swivel jaw.

I've seen ads for that from 1890 to 1942 and it looks the same throughout the years.

[edit] On second thought, the font of the writing on the side will probably narrow down the dates, but I don't know Prentiss well enough to place it. Catalyze might know.

Paging Catalyze. Catalyze to the front, please.

Lots of people don't like the serrations. The don't really serve any purpose other than to mark up whatever you are trying to clamp.

hey guys, I have a question on how to repaint an old vise? The finish is still thick in some places... How or what strips it the best and that do I use to paint it up?

I start by degreasing them in my parts washer and/or aerated dip tank then use paint stripper and a wire brush. My old B&D Work Wheel is good for that. I then use B&G Rust Remover to bring back the metal finish. Once the paint is removed I drop it into my dip tank for the rust. As for repainting, I use rattle cans - a light coat of primer followed by a light coat of enamel. I have Record vices and they weren't heavily painted to start with.

Craftsman... Dont know what it is

Picked this up today, It was attached to the end of an I-beam and on the other end was a Columbian pipe vise. This Craftsman looks like it was barely ever used! There are virtually no marks anywhere on it, It was just kind of greasy and has some rust on it.
It opens and closes really smooth and the handle is straight as an arrow. I started to tear it down tonight to clean it up and found some markings on it: underneath is 604 1/2-3, inside the slide and stationary part are NO 391 5197 M-002 and NO 391 5197 M-003.

Anyone have an idea of age of this thing? Sorry for the crappy cell pic's I dont have a camera.
