Well.... I was going to have a sub install my steel siding since I havent ever done it and I am just ready to have the shop done. However the price came back way out of whack in my opinion. 2500 in materials and 4K in labor. Material is about 500 more than i can buy it for and the labor seemed outragous. So i decided to go ahead and tackle it myself.

I have worked with most other types of siding so, it cant be that hard. Traditional AL and Vinyl, Cedar etc... The jams and trim work Ive got covered no problem.

I have found a vendor to supply the steel in the color i want. Does any one have any tips for trimminng the steel to size and/ cutting the angles in it for the roof pitch? A friend of mine suggested to use a circular saw with a metal cutting blade. He said it looks very similar to the blade on a demo saw and will cut through the steel very clean. Any input?

Also looking for suggestions on screw spacing.

Any info or knowledge you can pass on would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

When I done my roof, I spaced them every 24" vertically, and then every rib. I did the cutting when needed with a circular saw w/ a metal blade...worked just fine. toughest part was getting the first sheet square.

Hi,

first of all, please excuse my english, as i'm french speaking...

When cutting with a circular saw with a metal blade, it sometime help to clamp the smallest parts you are cutting to your sawhorse or between two 2"x4" to prevent the sheet to vibrate too much.

Also, as you use it for siding instead of roofing, you could use some j-channels for trimming at the top, corners and around windows. It's the same kind than those used for soffit but are 5/8" instead of 1/2" and it give a clean and neat finish.

Hope it help!

I guess from your title that your going to use some type of high rib steel 3' wide for you siding?? If so, it's used in your application for looks/weather protection and not strength. So I would put a screw on the side of every high rib and then from 4 to 8 feet vertically ( your choice, as the panel is not going to fall off:) Normally they are screwed into the girts for the spacing ( on my building walls, at the bottom, then @ 7.5' and every 5' after that, but my building uses them for a lot of its structural strength and yours will need none from the steel)

BTW I cut mine with a nibbler. The really slick way to cut them is with a sheet shear but for your use it would not be cost effective unless you could rent one from the supplier....
