Ran about 60' of 1/2" black iron pipe, plus fittings, for a new shop air line. Replaced the 20+ -year-old PVC line which was most likely going to grenade one day. Lots of work, but worth it in the long run. Waiting for the last 3 feet of flex line from Grainger, then I can complete the job.

After over a year with a transmission rear output shaft leak, I decieded to take care of it. All this for a $10 seal. No one had the seal, so I have to wait until next weekend to install everything. I know why I bought that $10 seal puller from HF. worked like a champ, would hated to do the old flat blade screw driver thing on this. I should of changed the seal out when I had to xfer case out 2yrs ago when I did the 4 to 1 gear change, the old seal was like hard plastic with cracks all over

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Sat in a soft chair all day in my garage thinking about what I'd like to do next to my shop or to my MB convertible or what next tool I can't live without. I ruptured another disk in me back and am having back surgery number eight this week. I can't walk even with my cane, didn't think retirement was going to be like this. Thank God for garage journal and my I-Pad.

In and out!

But first let me thank all the people who came, and especially those that pitched in to help not only me with the food, but so many others that I wasn't able to give adequate attention to.

We changed 6 tires, did several sets of valves and TB syncs, changed a clutch and throttle cable on a 94 R1100RS, and so much more. Please post what you got done, and what you didn't.

For anyone who didn't get what they needed done, let me know and we will schedule something here at my place to get it done.

So, the photos!

Also pulled a trans and rear from a K100RT, and reinstalled them, all Chris and some help from others.

Lots done, fun was had by me, and some others I hope.

Thanks,

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Jim, looks like a lot of fun/work was enjoyed by all!

Here's my accomplishment from last night..

Finishing up the drivers door gaps on the 55, I pulled the door off to fold the leading edge of the door skin. I had neglected it earlier as the fender was not installed. I prefer to compare between the two for better gaps.

Picture001-1.jpg

As the gaps looked close, I used the existing fold and wrapped tight up to where the radius up top starts. The flange there is almost left straight from the manufacturer, so it's hard to judge while on the car, as it hits the fender. I folded that one at a 90 so it would fit closer to the fender to check the gaps, and so it could more readily be adjusted again, if need be.

Picture002-1.jpg

Picture003-1.jpg

Picture004-1.jpg

Once installed again, with the upper flange not sticking straight forward and hitting the fender you can better judge the gap. Here I'll use a compass the add a parallel line on the front edge of the door. Keep in mind as you get higher on the door, keep the compass paralled with the side of the car, and not perpendicular to the fender edge, or the mark will get wider for an incorrect gap..

Picture011-1.jpg

Picture012-1.jpg

The compass mark will help to realign the fold for a more precise gap.. There was a widening at about the center of the radius, so some vice grips were used to "tweak" the flange around, until the compass mark is parallel to the new flange crease...

Picture006-1.jpg

Picture007-1.jpg

Picture010-1.jpg

For the finished door gaps...

Picture013-1.jpg

Picture014-1.jpg

Now the typical tight area on these cars, the door to windshield post. These are too close at the top and will risk paint chips with even minimal flexing of the body. You can see how it gets tight up at the very top.

Picture015-1.jpg

Time to use the compass again...

Picture017-1.jpg

Picture016-1.jpg

And a 4-1/2 sander trims it down to the line, also opening up the flange seam....

Picture018-1.jpg

The seam is pinched together as it's welded...

Picture023-1.jpg

Picture025-1.jpg

Picture027-1.jpg

Picture028-1.jpg

The front and rear is sanded first to get rid of the bulk of the weld, then the edge is dressed up a bit..

Picture030-1.jpg

Picture029-1.jpg

Dressed, it will need one more weld bead down the edge and clean up again. Getting late this evening, so we'll save that for another day..

Replaced a junky old wood door with a new steel door. The old one only had a locking doorknob, but this one gets a deadbolt, and the lock is keyed to the rest of the house. My keychain just got a little lighter. :)

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

(Jeez, I hate to put my craptastic work on the same page as Robert's masterpieces, but here goes.....)

I found some used wide-track fender flares for my '82 Cherokee Chief project. One was in nice shape, but the other one was folder over good.
I went from this:
IMG_2942.jpg

...to this.....
IMG_2948.jpg

...to this.
IMG_2998.jpg

I also cut out the bottom of the 1/4 panel that was rusted out and put in a new patch panel.
IMG_2977.jpg

IMG_2979.jpg

I can't spot weld patch panels in for the life of me. I finally think I figured out that I didn't clean the rusty backside of the 1/4 that I was welding my new panel to, and that rusty **** was contaminating my spot welds.

IMG_2991.jpg

After I got it welding as best I could, I used lead to fill the seam, because my welds were spotty and I didn't want to use plastic filler for fear it would take in moisture thru the pin holes.

IMG_2997.jpg

I still need to skim coat some plastic filler on top of that to get it smooth. But I'll do that after I get the flare put on, which is next.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

well not in my garage but next door. neighbor comes over looking to borrow a impact wrench if it would work. i get there look things over, he has a Cambell Hausfeld compressor. the type with two small tanks meant for filling balls and tires. they are trying to get the crank pulley off of the engine.

well, i know it won't run my snap on MG725, but he insists we try it.
so we get it on his crank and looks like it might have enough air to do something, but the gun ***** up all the air and nothing. Now i know it would have worked on my compressor but i wasn't about to have them try to put the wheel back on and go over to my place. it just was crazy when i knew we could do it with a breaker bar.

so i get the breaker bar and a extension, my 36" wilde pry bar. i use the pry bar to wedge and hold the pulley in place, i get the breaker bar on it and its a awkward spot having a long extenstion to get where i can reach it.

well i give it some pull and nothing, move to a better spot where i can get a better bite on the bar all while holding the pry bar with my leg. give her a tug and it moves! who needs a impact wrench! well i get out of there and he brings back his puller its the right puller but he has no tip for it. he wanted to put the bolt part way in and pull agaisn't that, which is ok but not right. i told him since i have one and its right next door ill just use mine.

so i line up my snap on bolt grip puller with the correct tip so i don't mess up the threads. i told him i wouldn't be responsible for messed up threads and making his job alot harder to do. get everything set and start the work with the breaker bar, comes off firmly but smoothly.

i have no idea how long they were messing with it before i got home, but im sure he would have been there alot longer if i hadn't been home tonight. there ok people, but always trying to get by without the right tools and do things alot harder then they have to be.they were trying to get it off with a combo wrench, that was when i got home and they asked me to help.

i like to help people out when i can. i sure was glad to help and then get home to eat some porksteak though!

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

I had over filled the 5 gallon oil tank on the Heilig-Meyer Ford. I took the Peterson filter out of dry sump pressure line, put the Craftsman C3 19.2v drill with 90* attachment and nut driver bit on the dry sump pump and pumped 6 quarts of brand new Joe Gibbs XP3 racing oil back into the 2.5 gallon jug. Pulled the Peterson filter apart and checked the 100 micron screen (had engine freshened last year). Screen was CLEAN. Put everything back together and tightened it up.

Today must've been the National Brake Replacement holiday- I replaced the brake rotors and pads all the way around on the daily driver. Then replaced the front pads and rotors on the Honda too.
