I was at LOWES on Friday, and they have a display in front of the commercial help desk that says, "drop off your old blade, get voucher for your FREE new blade." It is for one of the major blade manufacturers, although I can't remember which one just at the moment. The new blade is something like "weld bonded carbide" or some other similar sounding nonsense.

>>just googled it, GJ comes up in the first few hits!

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=109876

I'll probably bring in much worse blades out of my stash, since these blades are actually new condition. The only thing wrong with them is they are not carbide. I'll post if there are any restrictions when I do take them in. Seems unlikely that you could trade in more than one...

I think in terms of styling and what is says about bygone manufacturing, that tape dispenser stands at the pinnacle of US manufacturing might.

That someone would produce a !cast iron! tape dispenser, weighing just over 6 and a half pounds boggles the mind.

I think it's awesome, and I'll be using it on my shipping supplies desk.

Saturday's finds all from one small estate sale. $20
Pissed the folks off when i showed up at 7:30 and they started at 9:00. I explained i just got off work at 7:00 and they let me look around.

Several nice ratchets, Plomb wrench, (2) Snap on 1/4 flexible extensions, Williams superrenches, Craftsman ignition wrenches, Fairmount line wrenches, 1944 date code snap on socket.

Nice Plomb wrench! I didn't know that they made engineers wrenches. I'll have to look out for those in my search for Plomb tools

Here are a couple more items that i picked up over the weekend but never got around to photographing for everybody to see.

The ratchet set is a Thorsen 1/2" drive with a extra Proto 3" extension and one Craftsman 1/2" socket. The steel box even has the original paper label on the side with the PN - 1121RBS

The ID badge is from a sale that i picked up a small pile of Plomb wrenches/sockets and have the PO's last name, Haven, engraved on most of them. Ill keep the badge with them so some of the history remains with the tools.

Todays haul was really good!! I had a list of sales to hit but only one actually had something worth picking up.

Everything you see is from one really old house in San Marino. All of the tools appear to be from the early 1930s or older.

The pile includes Blue Point, P&C, Plomb, Cornwell, IHC, Craftsman, Proto, SK, Krauter and Lectrolite.

I just wish there were more tools to buy but i pretty much got everything worth picking up.

Nice Haul Bigcaddy! Still on a Plvmb/Proto roll I see!

I hit one estate sale today, mostly junk and the stuff I got isn't spectacular, but worth the $10 they wanted. Probably the best of it was the V series 1/4" Craftsman Ratchet (with oiler!), in as new condition and the VV series Metric wrenches, and the 6" G series extension, also as new. Not shown was a 1 lb box of 1-1/4" drive screws.

The ratchet has replaced the junker Craftsman wit hthe **** plastic switch oin my road box, so that is two down, one to go there, in just the past 2-3 weeks. (I replaced the 1/2" with a RPFT before)

The folding measuring stick is interesting its a) from Sweden, b) all metric and c) 2 meters! never heard of the company: Hultafors :headscrat

EDIT: I got ahead of myself on pic, I also got a Craftsman "Long C" 3" extension in 3/8 drive; not in pic though.

Nice haul, outlaw. I went to a few more in the morning but nothing panned out. There was one more just a few doors down from the house and decided to go around 2pm I should of gone earlier.

The garage was full of RC car/airplane parts since the owner was seriously into the hobby. It was pretty much picked over but i was able to score a few gallons of lacquer thinner, race gas for model engines, a gold leaf kit with a ton of gold leaf and some other items.

The best part was uncovering a hidden tool chest cabinet that everyone missed. Inside was the guys Gillette razor blade collection and a bunch of other cool things i'm still looking through. 20 bucks for everything and i was more then happy to pay that!!

Did you get the tool cabinet? or was it not worth it? :headscrat

I've got an entire case of NOS Double edge razors, all gold plated, stashed around here somewhere...

From last weekend.

First stop had some NOS stuff ($28): Cresent linesman, Cajun mini "calipers", digital thermometer.

And some gently used stuff: JC Penny 3/8 torque wrench, Channel Lock Adjustable, Mag Light w/legs (corroded batteries), Bonney double open 6 pc wrench/roll/box.

Second stop had three old planes that I couldn't pass up ($75). Stanley Bailey #6 and #5. The small one is a Fulton.

Some misc stuff from a couple of other stops ($7.50): Matco 3/8 extension with can't remember socket, couple of Cman screwdrivers, glass cutter, Crafty Cutter, KTA-Tator (wet film gauge?), four drawer card file

Bigcaddy,
Gillette razor blades, or the handles they go on?

This weekend was supposed to be a bust. I managed to get to a few places, though. This is the harvest from 2 garage sales, an estate sale, and a thrift store:
05032012.jpg

At the top are a cheap box and a neat small cantilever box. Other notables include screwdrivers by Craftsman, Corsair, Irwin, Thorsen USA, Cornwell, and Oxwall. Pliers are Utica, herbrand, Craftsman, McKaig-Hatch, and no-name. Snips are Crescent (but look bent or oversharpened???), wrenches are mostly Lectrolite/TruFit, with singles by Wizard, Matco, Thorsen, and others. There's an Indestro open-gear 3/8" ratchet and 1/2" ratchets by Truecraft and Challenger (perfect for last week's Challenger socket set!), a number of random sockets, and 1+ set of Allen USA 1/2" drive sockets, from 7/16" to 1-1/4". Not shown: the two Allen socket cases, and a cardboard box of drill bits, allen wrenches, and other typical bottom-of-toolbox detritus.

bigcaddy,
I have a co-worker that has a knack for finding those. He makes really, really good money selling them on ebay. There's a particular model that will bring hundreds of dollars...

Is that model a Gillette Fat Boy 1-9 Dial adjustment? that is the first one that i picked up from that drawer.

I've sold a few on ebay and done pretty well for myself. The first one that i found was really old, silver plated and still in the original case. I paid $5 bucks for it and the ending price was 47.00 Its not a large sum of money but for $5, i can't complain.

That sounds right. I'll have to ask him Monday.

EDIT: Just checked ebay. That Fat Boy sounds like a "You ****" deal all by itself...

Can't complain any time you make money on a deal. And $47 on a $5 investment is a big enough sum of money to me. Wish I made that on the tools I sell!

A decent morning today! I dropped the most at the first stop, and only about a block from my house!

3" non-swiveling Woden vise, a 186-B/1; A solid little vise! Then I asked about an older Rockwell DP; very small (only about 32" tall), mod. 11-100, about 5-1/2 to the column, so an 11"? came with what appears to be the original 1/3 HP Rockwell tagged, Leeson made motor, and a stand for the whole thing with a switch mounted on the stand. not sure about the date on this one, but guessing at early 60's? :dunno:

The guard is missing but I think everything else is there and it seems to be in great shape, quill and spindle appear tight! for $15 I wasn't walking away! :D

I also got an very old Colman Quicklite nickle plated, brass bodied, dual mantle lantern, so I'm figuring it is pre WWII. And lastly I got from the same place, a bin of sockets and wrenches. Most of the sockets were craftsman, 1/4" both deep and std, and a couple of 3/8 drives, the smaller set of sockets in the pic to the right are Taiwanese so not too many to dump off...
Most of the wrenches were US old iron, including a Penens, and a P&c, the ones off to the left were import or that level, (some cheap stamped Oxwall ignition wrenches in there...)

Stop #2 was an estate sale and mostly this was some very old nut drivers I got only because of their uniqueness one way or another (the big one is 3/4" and there is a wood handled driver in there also...) and an old pair of fence pliers; but in a shed there was a 3" Columbian swivel bench vise, No. 63:

attachment.php

A stop at a HS flea only got me a modded Plvmb 5/8 combo, I had some old wooden woodworking tools picked out but the seller was nowhere to be found. I set them aside and came back after finishing and he was still gone so I said to heck with it...:

A bit more to come!

I also got a cool old fishing pole on an unscheduled stop, about 5-1/2 ft long and either wood or bamboo, for ocean fishing off a boat.

Another estate sale got me two saws, one an unusual deep hack saw, at least it takes hack saw blades..., some small, old lineman's pliers, a decent level, an old wood handled screwdriver, another plvmb wrench (3/8 Combo), a couple of short Bacarlo DBE, and an older Dunlap DOE. The back saw is a Henry Disston & sons.

The last useful stop got me some drafting tools: The pencils are identical to the ones I started using in HS drafting class... everything between the two boxes was inside the tin box at the top:

I didn't hit any garage sales this weekend... was selling stuff at a local flea market instead. But made a few bucks. I also walked around checking out what other guys were selling (part of the fun, right?). Bought a couple of fuse packs with miniature NASCAR race cars, two for a buck. At the end of the day, met a local guy who is downsizing and had a bunch of good tools to sell. I bought a few pieces and got his phone number for a follow-up.
I bought a Duro 3/8-inch drive flex-head ratchet from him, its in really good shape and functions well. Spent a total of ten bucks on 2 ratchets, 2 box-end wrenches, an S-K 3/4-in combo wrench, a vintage S-K socket case, and an S-K 5/15 hex socket (didn't make it into the pics). Also snapped up a punch set in its original box for 5 bucks from another vendor. I didn't go crazy buying, because I had to pack up my own stuff at the end of the day.

Nice scores Lowbuck, Those No.5 Jr. punch sets are over $100 new... Looks like all you are missing is the bottom punch key? Or is that buried under the punch?

I can't believe the vises you guys get!

This was the first part of this weekend's good stuff:

Commercial sewing machine, $150.

At the same sale I also got a J roller (for formica) and a tuck pointing trowel. Paid $7 for both, the guy wouldn't budge. If I didn't have some brickwork coming up on my house, I would have walked. But as it is, I figure I got 1/2 off on the trowel, and the J roller was almost free.

I hit 6-8 more small sales on my way to my shop with the sewing machine, but all I found was a set of scooter wheels (bought for $5 for the bearings) and 2 new 10" dewalt blades for $7 each.

I stopped back for the last hour of the estate sale I hit on Friday, and scooped up some leftovers. I'll do a separate post on that... It wasn't spectacular, but I did get some good stuff.

Mostly clothes and kid stuff at the sales this weekend in my neighborhood :-(

I find these things come in waves. For a while its a lot of vises, then its hammers, then hatchets, then something else. :dunno:

The Colombian I picked up yesterday wasn't such a good deal, and the dynamic jaw is broken loose from the separate cast arm; and looking closer, it's not the first time... I'll weld it up properly, but the damage is already done...

Ckadams, your Columbian is one size larger than the green 3" one I have to repair. the opposite side of mine says Red Line with the same arrow. I wonder what the original colors were? Mine seems to be the original paint in green, on the other hand, the old repair welds are painted over... :dunno:

Not really tools, but they are for the garage. Got the stereo cabinet for 5 dollars and the card holder for free. Not too bad for a saturday morning. I plan to add some weather stripping along the glass to keep dust off my equipment.

Here are some pictures of the wood plane that i picked up this weekend. I was only able to hit one good sale, the rest were total junk and saturday was a complete waste of time. I guess everyday can't be a winner'

The plane was covering in dust when in picked it up but full of shavings from recent use. The widow said her husband still did favors for people around the neighborhood and since this was the only plane in the tool cabinet, it was what he used. Its a bit cumbersome but at 100 years old, it still had a razor sharp steel and will make ribbons on a fresh block of wood.

If anybody is interested in this tool, it has been listed on ebay.

I love the way these tools look, especially well used planes but i don't have the space to collect them. I only own 2 planes and don't plan on expanding my collection unless i find another No. 1 laying around.

The only tool related find this weekend was an articulated desk light. It's pretty plain but has a hint of art-deco in the base.

I checked the wiring in the base and it's fine - just needs a strain relief.

I was $5.00 . I'll add it to my collection of articulated lights . . .

Cheers

Jim
