Shopnut: I am making this up as I go...it appears there are going to be "design" elements in the office that are going to be there just because I think they might look cool...that's the poet in me! I know, I know, think of the storage space I am squandering like a drunken congressman...hey, at least when I come to my senses I can always put in a mezzanine right? Hah! I vaguely have a vision of open space over my head as I work there...lots of light....sort of a loft feel/look. Of course, any suggestions from the mind of the Asylum's Chief of R&D would be welcome.

I feel I should apologize for the pooping monkeys; didn't intend to cause anyone 'Animal **** Angst' and 'Nocturnal Nuisances'! lol But, on the other hand, they say a picture is worth a thousand words and the image of simians shitting surely underlines the necessity of total bathroom isolation.

As far as the open space 'waste' which irks Shopnut, I would humbly suggest building a cantilevered platform sleeping loft centered on the partial wall. Just think what fun FC and friends could have hanging out in their own elevated clubhouse space! OR.... it would make a wonderful habitat for those previously mentioned monkeys!

TOTAL bathroom isolation...bad monkeys!

Big weekend at the farm and good progress on the office. The interior plumbing is set, the walls are painted, the lights are on and the wood is getting finished…flooring in on order! First the pictures:

I also put a pad in behind the bath to setup the mini-split compressor …nothing fancy. We are going to put down VCT working on the colors and design etc.

The guys doing the work have really done a good job, really appreciate the help and the quality work they have been doing. Mrs. FBF approves so all is well.

The biggest sticking point left is the water and the sewage. Since this is a barn I will be putting in the septic...Good lawd guys watch OUT!

Shopnut: yep, it is getting close, but in all honesty I can see years of projects ahead as we move in and start working/living there. I am starting to think about the aviation stuff we will put on the walls...it is going to take a while for me to decide what to do since I have been preoccupied with building the last year +.

RL: the floor now has a complete covering of drywall dust....good news is it should clean up easy....I hope.

TB: I assure you that you will have lots of time to admire that pink beauty as I figure out other pressing issues like plumbing!

FBF, the 'barn' is coming along nicely; it has got to be a good feeling for you and the Mrs..

Don't fret about the PINK DOOR, in time you may even come to find it appealing; so much so, that you'll consider accessorizing the hanger wall decor with a mural, flocks of migrating PINK FLAMINGOS! Better yet, I'll bet you might even consider giving "Jeahnnie" a new PINK livery; color coordination is a very important aspect of interior design. One thing for sure, a PINK Navion would surely stand out at every fly-in you attend; it would never get lost in the mix. The bonus in going PINK is that it is a natural MONKEY deterrent; you never see Monkeys and the color PINK in the same room - guaranteed!

I read your post on email first and the emoticons are always spelled out...the little guy at the end was called Super Gay...that's just funny. I'm not taking any more pooh!

Talked with my Dad yesterday about our plane for water and sewage. After conducting an assest inventory: back hoe, check....shovels, check....dump truck, check....skid steer, check.....toddlers that love to "hep", check....complete lack of skills or qualifications, CHECK! We also have a transit to take some of the guess work out.

So, you can see we are ready to go. I did some reasearch and found a septic tank at tankdepot.com:

I am going to stake out the design this weekend and start assembling the materials, we will need some tile, gravel, PVC, straw, trencher, and fittings.

This is an AG building so there are no permits needed...nor will we seek the help of highly trained porfessionals...will this bite us in the bottom? Maybe...but we are going to give it a try and since it can't kill us (looking at you electricity) what can possibly go wrong?

Found a good deal on a septic tank at Menards, will go by there this weekend to begin assembling supplies for my first ever septic project.

In the mean time I can't forget the house…how do I get a dishwasher into my house prior to our move this winter.

Bottom line, we need a common sense way to put a dishwasher into our kitchen this year. There is no obvious spot to put one, the space between the sink and the stove is not wide enough for a 24 inch dishwasher. Should I extend out the peninsula and move the stove? Ideas? Inspiration? Anyone...anyone…voodoo something…

Yeah and it seem like all of the qualifications for a swimin hole as well,back hoe, shovels, dump truck, skid steer, toddlers, complete lack of skills or qualifications, a transit, and a barn to hide the skinny dippin.

I have seen a couple made from re purposed Harvestors, turned on thier sides in the ground, just a thought! Just trying to help.

Oh and I forgot to mention I really like the floor, really!

Carlson: Just out of the picture to the right is where the washer/dryer units are hidden in a closet. I would have room to extend the counter top to the left of the stove but an Island wouldn't fit I don't think...an island would be great if we could swing it.

Shotttx: Funny thing is we are going to expand the pond...as a borrow pit for site prep on my Dad's planned shop and to finish some grade work around my shop. They really use old harvestors for that? Those things are sort of monuments to a bygone era around our farm...very few dairys anymore. You like the floor in the kitchen, why thank you, that is some vintage vinyl flooring from the Nixon era I should think. I have to be careful...I am in the delicate position of having a shop that is MUCH nicer than my house...and bigger. Is that wrong? If it is I don't want to be right! HAH!

"...complete lack of skills or qualifications..." Sure glad Wilbur and Orville didn't let that stop them. You'll do fine. If you don't like it just burry it and throw some grass on top. Oh, wait... isn't that the main idea of the project??

For the dishwasher, three suggestions... 1) Teach the 42" FC not to drop the glasses as he dries them... 2) Get a portable DW on wheels that connects to the faucet and drain in the sink... 3) Or, plan the concept for the new kitchen now, remove a drawer and base cabinet to install the DW now in the general location where it will be in the future, preferably next to the sink base... But in order to afford repainting your bird as O suggested, #1 would be the least expensive way to start.

Wow...that is one ugly plane...I know it's only paint, but my goodness it hurts to look at. I wish we had a solid plan on the remodel...I just would like to get in the house figure out what we are going to do with the kitchen. Maybe we need to look for mobile unit.

With that delightful floor in the kitchen, why would you want to obscure any of it with a mobile unit?

After looking at the pictures a mobile dishwasher with a butcher block top would be my suggestion. It could then be a useful island for storing dishes, collecting junk. It might not seem like as big a space waster with a functional top.


Yeah and I really meant the hanger floor.

Shoots and Zeke, thanks for the ideas. I looked at it last night and I think I could extend the peninsula by parking a mobile washer ther with a butcher block on top. The pool...Mrs. FBF would really like one, told me this week one day she would have one. I said "does the whirlpool in the physical therapy office in town count?"

I might loose this one...she is pretty tough.

Not if you want to see the shop completed they way you are hoping...

Mrs. FBF really needs to be part of the participation as well as some of the results, like the dishwasher, a big bonus for her since she doesn't have one here now. But think of the benefits of a pool... when working in the shop in July and August, a cool break is a few steps away. And once that strip gets in, how about an afternoon fly-in, pool party and BBQ for some friends?

We really enjoy ours and it is just heating up enough that we may be able to start enjoying it this weekend.

Like I say, keep the Finance Minister happy and the project will go smoothly!

Thanks, I looked at the site and we actually have a rain water cistern on our house...we are so green. We won't make much gray water out in the hangar so we probably will just run that into the septic tank...it really is overkill for just one toilet.

Operation Pooh-b-gone has kicked off, went to Menard’s on Saturday and ordered this beauty…1000 gallons of pure pooh treating sweetness. I mourn the loss of anything cool or useful I could have bought with the money, but I got over that.
One of the most important parts of the project was to remember/find/guess where all the buried tile, wires, water lines, etc were which might cross paths with our proposed water line from the house. It had rained earlier so Saturday was a great day for using the tile probe and digging. I promise my Dad does NOT do all the work; I just always have the camera in my hands.

We used the tile probe, found a spot coming out of the house towards the hangar and then dug down to make sure the coast was clear out away from the house. The 42” FC had lots of fun helping too. It is going to be about 150’ of trench, below the frost line, through two known tiles, straight across to the shop.

The septic tanks will go behind the office on a nice flat spot away from trees. I used the measuring wheel and worked out where everything “should” go.
I also looked again at the kitchen based on what you guys had suggested, took this picture of the space to the left of the peninsula to show what type of room we have to work with. Looked for a mobile/skinny washer at Menard’s…they had nothing. I think there is room to park a mobile unit just to the left of the peninsula.

Notice the high end furnishing in that kitchen people...yeah, drool over that table HGTV. Ok, we may have to upgrade that at some point...once we have a project plane in the hangar we'll see if there is any money left over. HAH!

That is all the excitement we had for the weekend. I will spend this week lining up a plumber to do the interior work on the supply line so we don’t any damage to the plumbing in the house. I will get a truckload of gravel delivered and reserve an excavator from the tool rental place.

Isn't it amazing how much money and time is spent for something that will be buried and forgotten? Makes one wonder why outhouses are outlawed. In keeping with the farm theme, maybe you could erect a outhouse-looking shed over the septic tank as a symbolic reminder of times gone by; I'm sure the MONKEYS would love it!

OK, I have had LOTS of requests for some more details on how I, a mere layman, could hope to put in a septic system by myself. Ok, you caught me, that's a lie really, but my Dad I actually need a written plan so I had to write one...and make a powerpoint slide because that's how we roll in the Army. So here is the math/powerpoint part, designed with the help of the Ohio State Extension service's own handbook (bulletin 939, great document by the way).

You can see that I calculated 100 gal/day as the baseline, which is much higher than I would guess, but I used the tables provided for a one bedroom home. The handbook then walked me through how to determine the linear load rate, how long the runs had to be, how many runs, and how wide the trenches needed to be. Good book. Next I will start building my material list...did I mention my younger brother is Engineer for the state who specialized in waste water compliance? He will be reviewing my plan as well and keeping me from hurting anyone.

When I first saw that sketch, before I read the text, I thought maybe it was a wind chime.

I'll be bootlegging in a septic for my garage also, but fortunately my neighbor is a mostly retired septic contractor who has all the stuff and works cheap for neighbors.
