I don't work on cars but . . . . .

. . . .who needs that many rachets?!?:headscrat

And mind you, I am nor criticizing as much as looking for reasons that will fly with the wife.

There's a few more i'd like, but i think i'm mostly good at the moment. There's another full set of CM RP ratchets in the junkyard bag, the set of HF Composite ratchets, Napa Pro 1/4" and 3/8", and my crappy knockoffs at home for emergency use.

Would like to turn my Craftsmans in this drawer into Armstrong or CM Next Gens.

Anyways, the Gearwrench deal from this thread is probably my favorite tool purchase ever. Put the 3/8" cushion handle through its paces today, and it's GREAT. I love it!

To top that off, when you wear out that gearwrench ratchet, I believe you can put a 88 tooth matco repair kit in it for cheap. That's a value.

Then you are putting more money into it. Just get a warranty from gw for free. 60t is very good already and it will not cost anything under warranty. You swap, every time you need to change the internal, it cost money.

How are gearwrench wrenches compared to say, Williams (snap-on)?

At a little over $3 per non-ratcheting wrench, they might not be a bad deal.

My current toolset consists of only:
- Williams 3/8" ratchet (36 teeth - F936 clone)
- 28 piece deep impact socket set (mixed fractional and metric)
- some cheapo screwdrivers/pliers/etc

The williams is a nice ratchet wrench but they are about the same as the gearwrench NOS from taiwan. As they are most likely out of the same factory. The chinese gw are not as good.

If you want a very good set of ratchet wrench, the husky and blackhawk are much nicer set.

Also the williams ratchet wrench are no where as nice as the made in the USA Snap on ones. The williams not at the same level as snap on, but good quality.

I'm actually only asking about the non-ratcheting wrenches (open/open or open/closed). I figure with a ratchet and sockets there's no real reason to get ratcheting wrenches.

If you dont have ratcheting wrenches, you dont know what you're missing out on. I always grab those before sockets...they are just so damn handy!

actually that was what I uses to think, but there are places you need the low profile of a wrench that a ratchet can not get in. And the ratchet wrench makes it quick work vs a regular wrench.

But on regular wrenches, I would actually get a set of craftsman pro nos made in the use over the gear wrench or williams. Set of 13 was about 85 dollars with coupons from sears. Way easier to warranty the williams.

I find the flex versions even more handy.

Once you break it loose (preferably with the open end so you don't "stress" the ratcheting mechanism), switch to the ratchet end and flex it to 90 degrees and it turns into a mini speeder wrench. Unfortunately the flex join on my most used (10mm) is getting loose....not sure I have a hex key small enough to tighten it. Might need to stop by Sears and see if they will swap it for me.

I know this isnt close to the 10GW ratchets for $100 but BFR158T 3/8" 15" Long 88 Tooth Ratchet and AFR88T 1/4" 8" Long 88 Tooth Ratchet Total from Matco is $190.00, ebay seller has both for $121.00 shipped, essentially like buying the 3/8" at list and getting the 1/4" free. Not a super deal but not bad none the less especially since the 15" is a Matco exclusive. I'd jump on a set if i didnt just purchase so many matco ratchets just a few weeks ago :(. Both are stamped USA.

Received my three gearwrench ratchets (1/4" comfort, 3/8" bent handle comfort, 1/2" comfort) from the recent Sears "deal" today.

Honestly, not impressed. At all. The 1/2" reverser switch is gritty as hell, fit/finish mediocre at best, just nothing about them that looks quality. Honestly, I'll pick up my HF composite before any of these, every time. And there not even in the same league as my Snappy's. Better if I put the Matco 80 tooth rebuilds in them? Maybe. But I don't think I'm investing another $20 each in these ratchets.

Heavy, clunky, rough internals and poorly finished does not make a good ratchet imho.
