I was out and about before the rain storm today, and managed to come home with a vintage Craftsman 1/2 drive set wit h a snap on Ratchet inside. Does anyone know what the date marking is on the Craftsman, Or better yet know where Iwould find a period correct ratchet to go with the set? I attached pictures of everything that came in the $5 bundle thats right five bucks.

H in a circle was New Britain and ran from about 31-47, the long C Craftsman ran from about 1933 to 48, tapering off sharply to 51, mostly for power tools IIR.

Not sure about any date codes, but Snap On did use them, and there is a chart floating around here somewhere, unless your ratchet is pre date code..

Here is a link for your snapon ratchet; the date code is usually between the "on/off" recessed area where the selector is. Then check out the date code chart to figure out the year of manufacture.

What it the largest socket you have in the set? I have a matching 1 1/8" and 7/8" orphaned sockets for a 1/2" drive ratchet that i don't need. They are yours if you want to enlarge the size of your set.

That set only goes to one inch I would love to get at least the one and an eighth from you what do you want for it? I am now looking for a period correct ratchet to finish the set anyone?? Bueller?

I took the ratchet apart when I got home as it was pretty sticky. Upon removing the bottom panel, It was still full of the factory grease that was now rock hard. I sprayed it out with brake cleaner and scraped off what I could get at with my pick set. I just sprayed some silicone spray on the thumb selector and gears and it is as crisp as the day it was produced. This is the first snappy oiler head that I have ever seen. I will take the date chart and see what the year of manufacture is for it hopefully tonight

Do you know where to start my search for a period correct ratchet? And is there any additional information on when they were manufactured? It interests me that they were made under contract from new Brittan. Any additional information you have on it would be appreciated

That looks like it fits, I dont know much about the vintage Craftsman yet but it appears to be the same, Are you looking to part with it?

How do you select the direction on that Ratchet, I have never seen anything like it

Craftsman, Yes it is, just wanted you to see the form ect. of what you will be looking for. You have to toggle a rocker on the side to change directions. I don't even know what the sizes are worth in that form? I do have some sockets that have ee on them and some with G, so I am lost too.

The 3/8" and 1/2" drive ratchets of that era look nothing like that model of 1/4" drive ratchet.

Craftsman has always been big on having different type/style ratchets so no big surprise there the oldest Catalog I have access to for hand tools is 1941, and here are the different types of ratchets, interestingly the 1/4 only seemed to come that one way:

This round head and the shape and knurling of the sockets shown just scream SK to me...

I like the set below with the blue striped markers on the handles. It would be cool to find a set of those...

Outlaw Thanks for those Prints, I will have to copy those. I wonder how rare those old Blue striped ratchets are, has anyone ever seen one? What do you think a 1/2 drive ratchet from the period is going to cost me? Would it come Standard with a removable Drive? I have got a couple reply's to my wanted thread for one but was looking for the 1/4 drive style.. This explains why no one has one that looks like it haha

I have the 1/4" set. The breaker bar and sockets are stamped circle-H, but the ratchet is stamped BE. I got them at an estate sale a few months ago for $5. I don't really collect Craftsman stuff, but it looked cool and the price was right. The shed it was in had a Craftsman top box of the same vintage with the scattered remains of the tools that went in it. They had the 3/8" and 1/2" drive sets, but I passed on them. I can't remember if they were as complete.

Justin That is a cool set, I like that it has all of the drive tools for the set. Too bad the sockets are not complete as that could take some time. Do you plan to try and complete it or restore it? I have thought of restoring the case for mine to keep it from rusting. I just don't know what the value would be of something like this, and if it would destroy any potential value by repainting the box. Any Input GJ members

I cleaned up the tools as best I could and regreased the ratchet. I might try and find the missing sockets if I ever think of it. I'm usually too busy looking for Plomb tools at swap meets/estate sales.
To be honest, I've thought of selling this set, but I'm not sure it's worth enough to be worth selling.

There was actually a 1/4" drive ratchet of the same design from that era as the 3/8" and 1/2". I believe it is actually a 3/8" body with a 1/4" drive plug in it. That other ratchet could be a SK as Craftsman did use SK ratchets relabeled as Craftsman for their 3/4" drive stuff around that time as well.

It seems as though this thread has been derailed into a thread about Circle H craftsman tools so here is my set i've got laying around my garage. I picked them up in april at an estate sale during a huge rainstorm. I think the bad weather scared the usual suspects away and i had a run of the workshop.

The set had just about everything there with the exception of the ratchet. I don't think i missed it, it was just not in the set anymore.

The tools on the top of the lid were some others i picked up and don't go with the set

Arg! you guys are killing me with this "Long C" Craftsman stuff. I've been collecting it as I find it for over 20 years: No ratchets (damn lifetime warranty or age seems to have gotten most of them) and no hatchet, (and I have like 45 of the suckers, just none with the long C...)

I think if you clean up that Snap-on ratchet you'll find the date code. It should be located in the depressed panel where the selector lever is.

It's a 1-character code.

I have only ever seen ONE underlined C ratchet and it was at an auction preview recently. I was not able to be there for the auction so I asked if they could pull it for me and I would buy it outright or they could put it in the mainshowcase and I would leave a bid that would win. They would not let me do either. I know that ratchet is sitting in some dirtbag resellers garage and will be sold to somebody for a dollar who will ruin it using it as a hammer. I find a decent amount of underlined C stuff, the condition varies and nobody charges a premium because nobody around here cares.

BTW the ratchet I found predates anything in any catalog and I am not sure if was made as a short run after the last years catalog came out but before the year with the first ratchet came out. I will be searching the local flea markets and auctions for this one for years because I know at some point it will resurface.

do not restore the metal case. coat it with a lubricant of some sort and wipe it off. alot of people mention kroil but i prefer any aerosol spray lubricant (or what ever smells the best) lol

Here is a Craftsman BE style ratchet that I have never seen before. The head looks kind of like a Walden ratchet.
