Cruising through a couple of our regular pawn haunts today... pickings have been pretty slim lately, which is strange because usually when the economy's bad the pawn pickings are good... But anyway -

A red boot on an impact caught my eye and upon investigating closer, yep... it's a Snap On MG725. The boot's a little scuffed up, but it did its job protecting the tool, which is in excellent condition.

The assistant manager quoted me a price, and I walked out with it for umm, well...$115. How could I say no :D

Not purposely derailing the thread but what are the forum's thougts on buying used power and air tools? I have not done well with that in the past but maybe I am doing something wrong.

I feel like people want too close to retail for tools that have seen better days.

I would like to know as well. Other day I saw a MG725 and MG325 for 150 each.

Depends on the power tool, some wear out in normal professional use. Local guy to me runs a big polishing operation and they ALWAYS have one year old Dewalts and mostly used pads for sale in CL.

Other point is what is the typical failure and cost of repair? Some impacts break anvils and those are too expensive to replace in most cases, but a seal kit can be cheap.

Electric stuff bearings and brushes, but if its over heated armature may be toast.

Three points to consider here:

1. This one isn't in the "seen better days" category; it's barely been used.
2. It's a current model, parts are readily available and the most expensive part in the whole thing is $75 from Snap On.
3. This pawn shop has a 30 day warranty, if it has problems they'll take it back.

Risk for me in this venture is negligible.

Oh, and to follow up... once I got home and hooked it up, it runs like a raped ape and hammers like Thor himself. WAY happy with this used air tool! :D

Cool. I was not saying you were making a bad move, I just do not have enough knowledge of good power tools and especially air tools to really know a good deal when I see one. YET

You ****! I would have bought that for a back-up. I know where there is a green one, new or nearly new, and I thought it was a good deal for $180. That one you got is a steal!

I didn't take it that way, I'm just saying, if they're close to retail for one that's seen better days, then keep looking. When you find one in good condition for a low price, then that's a risk you may be willing to take.

You have to consider all the variables in picking up used air tools.

Oh yeah, you definitely ****. Love my MG725, use it every day, and got a good deal on it, but definitely not $115!

And I'm definitely glad it comes with that boot, it absorbs a lot of abuse!

The first 4 digits of the serial number are the year and week of production. The mg has a 2 year full warranty. E.g. 1142 is the 42nd week of 2011.
