Hi guys,
I am getting a Prentiss Bulldog No.96 that is missing the swivel base and handle - would anyone know where I would be able to get a swivel base and what other Model numbers would fit if I cannot locate a No. 96 swivel base?
And what would be a fair price for a swivel base?
I imagine I can fabricate the handle if there are none available.
Thanks guys.

The main reason your not getting any responses is that you've stumped the band! Swivel bases by themselves are going extint. Throw is a Prentiss that no one knows anything about and it that much worse. If its a nice vise, figure out a way to mount it without the base. if its a beatup vise I then hope your getting it for Zero cash!

Haven't gotten it yet for a photo- I didn't think the 96 model was that rare...

Well - I finally got the Prentiss Bulldog 96 - I took photos and I hope they come out here...I measured the hole for the handle - it is 1 1/4" opening.

The jaws are 6" - and it opens up 10" - I read that it is suppose to weigh in at 155lbs
Currently it weighs 123lbs without the base and handle.

"Seems like a new base could be fabricated?"

Yes - but I wonder what other Prentiss base can measure up if I cannot find the No.96 Model.
It would be nice to get it original - but if not, I guess you do with what you have...

Honestly, I would not worry so much about finding the swivel base. Mount it as-is, and bolt that bad boy straight to your bench. The swiveling feature can be quite over-rated anyway in my opinion. Nice vise!

Honestly....you don't want a swivel base for that. That vise isn heavy duty and if you use it for the heavy work it was designed for then it has no biz on a swivel base.

Well the Prentiss 52-92 swivel base is 6" diameter at the interface. This is the 4" version (about 50 lbs).

So in other words - those Models will not fit?
But I took the measurement across the bottom and it measured 10 inches across...Am I measuring at the wrong location?

I just took it apart - and surprised the collar was able to come out with the set screw - but the part that it srews into (female - don't know the proper name) is held in place by pins - and I do not want to open up a can of worms
and tap it out (btw - are those pins hardened?)
I brought it to my parts washer tried cleaning it up the best I could and now it has a coat of paint stripper on it bubbling up the paint.

One question - when the manufacturer makes the handle of any vise - are the rods threaded on the ends so the balls can be screw on?
The opening of the hole where the handle goes through is 1 1/4" - quite big.
I have to look a little deeper in my garage to see if I have it. It always seems that when I'm looking for something - I cannot find it - then when I'm not looking for it anymore, it'll show up 100 times...
Thanks guys.

I had a Prentiss that was a little smaller than that and I eventually gave up looking for a swivel base. I ended up selling it (in hindsight, probably a mistake). I'd probably just fabricate a donut shaped base to support it and bolt it to my bench. An aluminum ring or even a piece of hard oak would work fine.

That's a great idea using the aluminum or oak - I think oak would be a better choice.
I wonder about the question regarding the handle...

All the vises I've seen have the handle ends pressed on... While it would be really nice if they were threaded so the handle could be removed for repair/replacement, I suppose it would just add cost. I'd thread one end if I were replacing it. A little locktite will keep it on there.

That is what I plan to do - well, I finally dug up that steel rod - it was bent on the ends, so I cut 24" in the middle - it is 1 1/16" thick and slides in the hole nice with very little space so it can slide.
I wanted to weigh it - and it was 5 lbs. Pretty big slide handle.
I wire wheeled it - next I need to get steel balls for the ends.
I've searched the internet and thought it would be easy to get them threaded already - but no luck - I want to get the balls before I thread the rod to make sure they will be the same threads - my luck, I'll thread the rod and the ball threads would be different.

Any idea where I can get regular (not chrome) 1 1/2" or bigger steel balls that can have a threaded hole of 1 1/16"?
Not sure what type of steel it should be where it can be strong and yet not brittle.
I checked on a thread that someone posted here on making a beautiful handle and he said Reid had steel balls - but not this size after I called them.
So I need to keeping checking and looking for them...

Had you considered just using a 1" threaded nut? you can tur the 1/16 down to 1" leave it long and radius the end of the threaded end so you have a half round end sticking out of the nut. Bottom both nuts, and put on a couple of 1" rubber washers or O rings as pinch protectors.

Would do it - but no machines in this garage to do it. Wish I could.
