I`m guessing that that neighbours are pleased to see that old garage gone, especially if they know what`s coming. :) I know that I`m not the only one that is going to be watching this build with anticipation.

Man, I love those old gas stations, they have a lot of character. As a kid I had seen them so often I took them for granted, but as I got older I almost forgot about them with all the new cookie cutter, convenience stores with gas pump islands. In the last 8 to 10 years I've paid more attention to the artwork that covers the stations from way back & now I miss seeing them. Somewhere, & I forget, is a museum that has a reproduction gas station inside it. I hope I can remember where it is so I can find the pics again.

Roger55, your idea to replicate an old station is cool, I can't wait to see more photos as you progress.

That is going to be sweet. And having that easy street access to your back yard is a real bonus.

Yes, I live on a corner lot. And the front of the house faces south.
Here is a partial plat of my property showing the location of the new shop. It is 4.1 acres. The back fence splits the property in 2 but the plat does not show the full 2 acres on the north side.
It is pretty much left natural. The entrance to the house-attached garage is on the back of the house.
And, btw, I hope to have the slab poured by next week. Will post pics of that when it happens.

Get this!

It's Sunday evening (about an hour ago) and my foundation guy calls me from jail. Says he needs $451 to get bailed out.
So, he says if I'll come down and pay it, he will finish all the rebar work tomorrow, arrange for the inspection, and have it poured on Tuesday. (We'll see.)
I still owe him $1,200 of his original bid, so I went ahead and got him out. (Am I nuts for doing that?) I told him no more money until it's finished and cleaned up. (I am paying the for the actual concrete separately from him.)

Hmmm... Just looked at the forecast. A 50% chance of rain tomorrow and 20% on Tuesday.

Keep your eye on him. What did he go to jail for?? I wont get everything in writing so if he does disappear then you have something to fall back on

Why did he call you? No local family? Or was it because you owed him$ ? He definitely owes you one now. I'd hate to see your unique build get screwed up by him. As Jpfreak said, I'd be keepin' a close eye on that lad. Good luck.

Looks like we are back on track.
The ex jail-bird has the foundation ready to pour. Told him I didn't want to know what he was in jail for.
Inspection tomorrow at 8:30 AM and concrete trucks arrive around 11.

I'm in the initial planning stages for my second garage build. On this one I want to rough in drain lines. I think I count 7 pvc piles ready for the floor pour in your garage. Can you spell out what they're all for? If I'm only planning for a possible bathroom in my garage (no shower) then it seems I'd only need 2 drains - toilet and sink. What are all your drains for?

Thanks!
Tom

On the front side, I have one 3/4 conduit for Cable TV and Cat 6 computer wire.
Also, the main power 1 inch conduit. And a 1/2 PVC air line out to the gas pump island.
In the middle there is a 1 1/2" PVC pipe I installed for a vacuum system. (Comes up in 2 places).
As far as drains, there is a sink in the main area, a sink, shower and toilet in restroom. And, one more drain for a washing machine in the room adjacent to the restroom. I am not planning on a washing machine at this point but was talked into putting in a drain for one just in case I change my mind.

It's Sunday evening (about an hour ago) and my foundation guy calls me from jail. Says he needs $451 to get bailed out.

Years ago the company I worked for hired a painter to do the outside of the office. Got a lowball bid - less than the quotes I had gotten the year before to paint my house (about a quarter of the size). He comes in with him, his wife, his son, and son's girlfriend and then hires some of the neighborhood rejects that just hang around - but seems to be doing a halfway decent job. About halfway through the project he just disappears. A week passes... Two weeks... Third week and the bosses are starting to look around for another painter when this guy shows up again - sort of embarrassed laugh and says he and the old lady got into it and she put him in jail...

They finished up the job, but it was a real rush job from there on. Barely scraped things, no primer, and just slap the paint on. Bosses couldn't be bothered when I told them about what was happening. Two years later and the whole thing was peeling worse than before...

Funny thing about this is he used his one phone call to call you

Coming Along

Still don't have the pump island poured. My concrete guy has skipped town.(Or maybe back in jail.) Others have chipped in to help us get that done. Hope to get it poured by Thursday.

I would love to have a garage like these too...

I have to agree with Kevin54, I'd be in there 24/7!! When I was in High School I used to detail a collection of unique cars in an awesomly decorated and layed out garage - weird enough, I didn't really appreciate the garage as a youngster......now I can't get enough...

As for Jay Leno's garage, not to blow my own horn, but our first issue of Garage Style Magazine features his restoration shop, and issue two will focus on his collection garage.

Thanks for your reply.
I hope my workshop can make it in your magazine some day!
I'll keep this thread going for a long time as it will take me a good while to get all the details done.

Here's a pic after today's progress:

WOW!
Going to be one hell of a garage!
Did not see if you mentioned it, but I hope you plan to install a security system in there too.

Not a service station, but my shop is set up like a small city street inside. .Its lots of fun, and houses all my collections under one roof.

I checked out some more of the pics you have posted in other threads.
Very, very cool. You must be proud as heck.

Here's my progress as of today. I am excited as the building has taken it's final shape as of today.

Aweseome build, Roger

I just went through the whole thread but might have overlooked it.

Are you planning to utilize the overhead space ?

There is a station like that around the corner from me - with two buildings on either end with the chimneys just like that and service bays between them. Currently the one end is a coffee shop and the other end is vacant. Keeping my eye on it if it ever comes up for sale...

Roger....you're cooking right along on that. Great progress. One question though, what are you doing with the corners and what type of siding. OK...that's two questions. I figured you would trim the corner first then bring the siding to it. It looks like the way that you are doing it, you will have to caulk. Hardibacker siding?

If it is HardiBoard, when I did mine I did what you are saying - installed the corner boards and then brought the siding in to them.

Thanks guys.

Yes, it is smooth Hardiplank.

You can do it both ways. You can put the trim on top like I am going to do or do it the way you say and put the trim on first and but the edges of the planks against the trim.

There are two reasons I am putting the trim on top. One is that the trim will tightly hold down the ends of the planks. The other is that the caulk will not be at the end of the board.
It does take more caulk but I do think it is better to do it that way.

Last year, when I remodeled the house, that is the way I did it. I also replaced all my windows on the house with Kolbe-Kolbe windows as well.
