The walls were so pretty when the faux painter got done we did not want to cover them up. We looked into taking a picture of the wall and then having the image applied to the acoustic fabric. It wouldn't be exact by any means but at least it would not look like a panel stuck on the wall.

These guys make Acoustic Panels that look like artwork. I'm guessing you know about them, but just on case you don't...

Well, I had to read through this twice. I love the fact that from the outside its like artwork and inside its all business. Kinda like a racecar that is a show car too (we all have seen those here and there). This garage is like looking at a beautiful woman or your favorite car, you can't stop staring. Congrats on your success!!

When I designed the garage I did have a future plan to build a loft. If you check out the interior pictures you will notice the vaulted ceiling in the back corner of the garage. I have always had a never ending search for more storage and this was going to be one more place to organize "stuff". Car parts and just the average **** you had sitting around your garage. I want to keep the garage as clean as possible without this "stuff" sitting around in view.

The other reason for this loft is to create a workspace under it I could enclose for dirty work. Whether it is cutting wood or grinding metal I want to try to isolate this type of work as much as possible. It will have a 8.5 to 9 foot ceiling and will measure 17' x 22'.........big enough to put a car in.

The floor joists span 17'6" and will be supported on one side with a ledger board bolted to the concrete block wall. The other side will be supported by three 6 x 6 posts with double 14" micro lam beams.

This past week I got a wild hair in my **** and decided to call the truss company to build the trusses. I had been thinking hard about it lately and decided the only way I was going to get started was to get some material on the job site. On Friday, and only 3 days after i placed the truss order they showed up on site. Here is a picture of them siting in the rv bay. It started raining and we pushed them in with the Bobcat.

I still have some material to get on site but this is a start. Wish me luck..........I will be taking progress photos once we get started.

why don't you come down and help then:lol_hitti your only an hour away. I hope to have it done by July 1. I am going to set a goal to get the rest of the material on site by the end of the week. I have 2 nephews......one is a framer, the other a building contractor.......I am experienced as well so we will try to get the framing knocked out in a few days.

WOW hats off dude your build and drive is sweet.

What treatment is on your floor and do you find issue if you drive your tracked loader on it ? I am looking for a floor finish that will handle a forklift and weld splatter :)

you know, when jlcolvin posted the picture of the suburban in the grey color it did stand out didnt it..................guess we will have to cut that pinch weld off!!!

I was thinking that you should fabricate some side pipes and a mount to hide it. The pipes could be wide and flatter to get enough flow.

Awesome build by the way!

I used a 2 part acrylic epoxy. It was manufactured by Scott paint here in Florida but I know home depot and Lowes carry similar products. I would not call this an industrial coating by any means. It is very chemical resistant (except heavy acid) and a pretty hard finish. I had the track loader through the garage many times and I have a regular fork lift as well. I have had no problem with the machinery damaging the surface. I have dragged the forks on the floor before and it will lightly scratch it. Weld splatter is another thing and it will show up......particularly if you are welding heavy steel.

Edit..........just realizing you are from Australia... guess no Home Depot or Lowes

Maybe someone else will chime in on a more durable product.

:drool:I've been coming to this site for years now admiring all of the great garages, but never felt so compelled to make my first post until now. What an incredible, visually stunning, and overall cool place. It's great to see that people who have the money to build what's in their imagination still have time to share with the ones who don't. Very cool!

Mark, That Media Room is Awesome. I love the out-of-the-box creativity with the whole space and use of materials. great work.

And now on to The Loft. Finally we get to watch the almost-live-action play-by-play of the Monster Garage's next project. Unless those trusses are really 6-months old .

Keep up the great work!

OUCH on the joke on the trusses:sad: Man, it is a rough crowd on the garage forum. But really, I deserved that statement..........funny guy:bounce: This time it will be done in real time.

I wanted to share this photo as it is one of my favorites of our home and I think you will enjoy it. I will qualify this picture garage oriented because the railings and the A/C vents were built in the garage which makes this picture garage journal approved:D A close friend of mine built the railings in place out of aluminum. They were final welded in the garage and sanded before the powder coating. I did not want to have big white a/c vents showing so we used some 1 1/2" aluminum angle, welded 1/2" diameter solid aluminum pipe inside for the vent and painted them(they are on the front of the balcony). the wood on the balcony is pecky cypress. My brother laid all of the stone. The caps on the columns are concrete and were formed and poured. We cut them to size and installed. The old window in the wall is an really old window. We have a lot of this really old **** in the house......door and shutters are old. the door leads no where.........i wanted the wall to look like a two story building.

Mark, That is just amazing! The variety of materials, attention to details, reusing old materials and all done with a craftsman's precision. You have a beautiful house. Thanks for sharing it with us. It is photos like that one that give the rest of us ideas on how to use a variety of materials to get great results.

As for the trusses... I was hoping it would be real time. But when this thread started, I didn't catch on that you were done with the garage when you started posting the whole story here. In the early construction photos, I went on about having a good tile roofer that would do you justice and you were probably laughing to yourself while sitting in your finished building. And what a beauty it is. I'll sit back and look forward to seeing the progress.

HEY MARK: Dadgum I started reading this thread an hour ago and it has kept me up way past bedtime. It is just super. Our Vett club was just in Sarasota for the St Armands Circle Show and are sorry we missed this. We would sure love to stop by for a site visit. Maybe next year. We had 8 cars come down from N Florida for the show and our past president won best of show for his straight axel he drove to the show. Super hospitality and what a nice area for a cruise. You have some great rides to see the area for sure.

Thank you for sharing your hard work and great ideas with so many.:thumbup::thumbup:

What is the exposed brick on the walls? Is it like a wallpaper, real brick veneer? Anyways, I really like the outside looking in look to it.:thumbup:

You know guys when you make comments it developes brain activity (doesnt happen as much as it used to) and I think of another picture to post. I am not as clever as that good stripper...............mind is just slow.

Good question Kevin. We used alot of brick and stone inside the house. I spent 2 months trying to figure this wall out. We wanted the plaster over brick look and fully intended to use the real brick veneer as we used throughout the house. We have entire walls, stairways, and the second floor hallway with the brick veneers. The problem was attaching the brick veneer to the drywall and dealing with the 1/2 thickness of the brick. I certainly did not want to plaster up over the brick and have a hump. At the end of the day I used the faux dude who did the walls in the media room to create the effect. He taped off all of the brick mortar joints and applied the drywall mud to creat 3 dimentional brick veneer. Hand painted the brick and the joints so they look real. Applied the skip trowel on the wall so it appeared like plaster was wiped over the brick and walla there it was. Quite frankly it is so realistic and at the end of the day it was probably more economical than using the brick veneers. This guy was very talented. It was was of those stumbling block decisions that came out successful. I really have to think things down to a nub.

Upstairs hallway pictured. This brick goes all the way down the stairs and all done by my brother and a guy who works for us. I fought my wife on this idea and she would not give in. I really glad she didnt listen to me..............not that it was the first time she has ignored me.

So if I am reading this correctly, the brick is nothing more than drywall mud that is textured and painted to look like real brick? If so, that is so cool!!!

Who comes up with the ideas to do the things that way? Do you have an architect and a designer making all of the interior decisions, or do you and the wife sit down and decide you you want things then relay them to the contractor? Post up some more of the rooms. I'm just loving this place :thumbup:

Sorry to arrive late. Pretty much my M.O. though! It makes it better in some ways, since I can read about it in the end without having to wait!:lol_hitti
Not that you haven't heard this before, but this is an amazing, stupendous, incredible, superlative, superlative, etc, etc build!! I absolutely love it! Even better, you treat it as a real garage, with real work getting done!! I am just floored by the creativity. Having built houses for the last 20 years, I am still amazed by what people can come up with! Thank you for sharing!

I guess if you get right down to it the brick on the wall is nothing more than drywall and paint. This is not a unique solution for brick on a wall. However, the quality of the person we hired was over the top. He spent many years at the Ringling School of Art and his talents are incredible.

My wife and I designed the house from scratch, I act as the general contractor, and my wife decorated the home. There was no builder or interior designer involved.:rocker:

Mark, love the vents. Supply or return air? I would love to see a shot of the mechanical room. Also love the seats (old theater seats maybe) at the top of the stairs. You guys have great taste, more of a masculine design than my wife would go for, but then again, I'll have to show her these pics as see if she would go for something like that.

thank you

You've obviously done well for yourself, but what I love is the fact that you still turn the wrenches. Could easily farm it out. I'm impressed.

I have always done my own work, mow my own yard, wash my own cars. I don't know any other way to operate. I am originally and Indiana boy and grew up working on my grandfathers farm. I know work.:)

your wife must be very understanding with all them projects.....:bounce:....love them cars mark..

Well, I actually got the talk yesterday that my "hobby" was getting out of control. Looks like I might have to sacrifice a few things to keep her happy:( she is probably right:dunno:

Ok, So is the brickwork on the upper floor real or faux also.
If real is the upper floor concrete form-work. ???

You know we need construction shots of the house now.............................
