I'll add a mini review for anyone that's on the fence (and this is based only on the reviews I read, limited fiddling with the saw in -store and reading through specs).

This is the saw I was looking for before buying the DWS780. The deciding factor was whichever one I could score a deal on first. Honestly though, I was really hoping I'd find a 717 first. It has a 6" fence for cutting tall base molding against the fence. That's more than any other 10" slider on the market (most others are in the 4.75" ballpark which was an issue for me). Cross cut capacity is 14". It's got a sizable bevel scale (4+ inches across). Miter scale is large enough to get within 0.25 degrees. Cam lock lever makes fine miter adjustments easy (I like it better than the twist knob style). The sliding mechanism is reasonably smooth...not nearly as good as the Makita, but not as terrible as the DW780 either (my biggest disappointment with that saw). It's plenty good for smooth crosscuts in my opinion. The saw is compatible with their LED sighting system (it's optional though). I have this on my 780 and I think it's great. No messing with alignment and also serves as a nice worklight. I generally don't find lasers very helpful because they wash out so easily in daylight. Their LED system is just bright enough to work in broad daylight. Finally the weight is reasonably good for a slider at 51 lbs. The only weak point is the blade. What they give you isn't ideal for fine trimwork, but that's easily resolved for $40-60.

This probably won't last more than a day, but it's a fastanstic price on a saw that has the capacity of a 12". If I didn't just get the big brother (12er), I'd be all over this one.

This is the Dewalt DW718, the 12" version for only $399.00 at Lowes.

Is the DW718 really much better, besides cutting capacity? Takes up more space, uses bigger blades which cost more money? I had thought about your suggestion though, just debating which one I want...

It may not be that easy. The DWS780 replaces the DW718 from what I understand. The local Lowes by me has 1 718 in stock last I checked, and HD had none. So this might be a YMMV situation.

My local Lowe's has 0 in stock. According to online, HD has 5 or 6, but I think they are actually the 780 because I didn't see them at the store. I was thinking if I order the 718 online, they might actually give me the 780 in store, but price matching would be tricky....

Is the 718 worth about $50 more (after tax)?

Still wish I bought at $375!!! I found a DW705 on craigslist for $200...not sure if I should buy that or keep looking for a 10" slider??

They started at $300 and now are down to $200....

OK, but it's only on local retailers they give the guarantee, you can't print out an item from amazon for example and get the price matched?
