Cool.

I have any question though. Has anyone here built a DIY grill using gas vs. charcoal? I'd like to do a build similar to the OP idea, but build my own gas burner. All my store bought burners rust out very quickly. I'd like build a stainless burner, but dont want to blow myself up!

Buy some stainless burners... they are cheap, not worth making yourself....

Not to hijack. I've found burners easy to find cheap. Mid level grills tend to have stainless burners but crappy thin steel bodies. They good for a season or two. Burners tend to last a few more years.

FWIW, the burners on my current grill are stainless. I've replaced them once already. They are so thin the heat seems to destroy them in just one season.

I was kind of wondering if I could get a piece of stainless pipe (with a decent wall thickness) and drill a bunch of holes to make my own burner.

Interesting concept for the grill. I am a bit of a novice to grilling, so please do tell why you want two stacked 55 gallon drums? Space savings with double the cooking area (two separate grills stacked)? Or indirect heat from the lower barrel plumbed to the top barrel?

Yes you can, I have made some out of schedule 40 regular pipe. Those did not last long either. I used a 1/16 inch rill bit. ( quite a few actually) Till I figure out turn the drill press up and shorten the stick out of the bit from the chuck and go at it. Put the holes as close as you can and have at it. They did not last too long either. :( Lots of work for naught.

Any way I am tyring out some cast iron brinkmans from home desparate. :)

Here

Don"t know how they will work out, It is a cheap 4 tube burner grill that used to have the tube burners in it. :)

Indirect heat for smoking and i guess if you make the fire hot enough in the bottom you could actually grill on the top but its mainly for smoking

If you wanted, just build a fire grate into the top one too for direct grilling, and the lower firebox just for indirect smoking.

if its a smoker you shouldn't have burners, the bottom should be your wood pit, but you have to get the heat to rise to cook and smoke at the same time. I recently bought my wife a Traeger wood pellet grill and there is no direct heat, and the food on it is down right amazing.

Ok a few details if you do not mind, I see thermowells and wires. What do you have going on there? A controller of some kind or just monitoring?

Nice fab job.
