Hopefully the pics show up. This is how she came to me. The vari-slo worked, but wouldn't go down all the way to the slowest rpm, I don't think it was properly positioned on the column.

Only adjust the vari-slo when the motor is running! Mine is kind of hard to get to the lowest point also.

made a little progress today. Hardly a concourse resto job, but I like it better than it was. Some spots of the paintjob kinda ****, but I guess that's what you get when you paint outside in the desert during June. Needed to get her back together to clear the bench space. Haven't touched the motor yet.

I'm considering adding a second color to the "bridge of the nose" in front and as it runs a long the sides. Also would add a couple little accent areas somewhere if I do.

First thought was gloss black, but then I thought maybe like a 1950's cream or off-white color to go with the art deco thing. I'm listening to any suggestions...

Do you plan to put the trim back on or did you just paint over it? I kind of like that part. A white would look good with the red.

it's actually just taped off in the pics, but it's hard to tell. I could never bring myself to paint over those old emblems. I need to make a decision on the second color and get it painted cause I really want to see it once the masking tape is removed. Hopefully it will look pretty cool.

I did plan on removing the emblems so I could do a better paint job, but didn't want to remove the spindle pulley and just didn't have anything to get in there and knock those rivets out from the inside. I could have drilled them out, but wanted to save them

getting closer. There was a little piece of electrical tape on the motor trim wrap piece. Perfectly preserved that little bit of shinyness you see, making the rest of it really look like ****. This piece doesn't seem like it's going to clean up very well. I tried the green scotchbrite pad, would steel wool be better??

I thought I heard some bearing noise when I first bought it, so I'll have to plug it in and check for sure. I'm cutting the refurb a little short for the time being, as I am looking at buying a new (used) motor for my shovelhead. An evo motor, actually. I'll still clean her up and slap some paint on though.

Not sure what I'm going to do with the speed setting panel. Afraid I'll damage the panel if I try to pop those rivets out, but I would like to clean the aluminum up where the 'bolt' clamps to and you can see the wear.

Have you found a site for replacement parts? I just picked up one of these and it's missing the belt cover. How much are these things worth...

I haven't even looked for parts yet. My belts are pretty rough, especially the motor belt. Paid $150 for mine, which i think was a real good deal cause it has the vari slo. They go for 150 to 200 without that attachment around here...

You did good getting the vari-slo with it at that price. As for parts, belts and bearings can be replaced with new ones.....pretty much everything else is going to have to be sourced from a donor machine or fabricated.

Accurate Bearing is a great source for replacements.

Well, I decided to forego the second color for now. It's about 120 degrees in the garage. I'm painting the attachment plate for the motor right now. I hate cutting my woork short, but the motor is going back on as is. That will be a project for another day. There is a little zing sound coming from it, but I don't think that's anything to worry about? It really won't be seeing much use anyway, I'm just glad to have it.

The red is a good bit darker in person. If it would have turned out the shade it shows on my computer I don't think i would have liked it too much. It's gonna drive me nuts looking at the un'refurbed motor next to the fresh painted and cleaned up parts, but oh well. I gotta get my bike back on the road.

Also, the emblems are not as clean as they look in the pics, it's a bit of an optical illusion

It's only 120 in your garage? You must have air conditioning. :)

Changing the motor bearings is a breeze. I got them in Phoenix at Bearing Belt and Chain on Buckeye road and 7th street.

My motor looks a little different than yours but the part size / number I got are:
Bearings Limited, 6202X16MM ZZ. If you go to Bearing Belt and Chain with your old bearings in hand they will be happy to help you out.

Try some CLR on the motor band. I soaked some paper towels in CLR and just let the paper towls sit on the rusty chrome band for a while. Then I used a not-to-tough scotchbright pad and then some stainless steel wool.

thanks, I'll have to check that place out!

I just picked up the same drill press for $175. Unfortunately mine is missing the head band and the I.D plate on the base. Although everything works like a dream. Why the red paint over the stock gray?
