I don't have my order number at work, but I ordered some Bonney sockets and wrenches on the 4th. This is my second order with Epsteins. I learned of them through this site.

154 orders in my inbox today. Not sure if they are all GJ orders, but I bet most of them are. Good work!!!

This is exactly what I was hoping to see for information but I looked on the gazette side.
Sending a pm since I think I am your closest local boy, about WHEN would be a good time to do the pickup and shop the stuff that isn't online (with all the All Star road closings).

I understand what you mean about watering it down. I'd be curious to hear from others how many times per year we should do this and still expect enthusiasm. I mean, for the tool obsessed, why would we be any less enthusiastic about buying tools and supporting a great family business if it was more than x number of times?

It is a concern though, and I am glad you brought it up.

I would think anything over a few times.. 2, maybe 3, and i think it would start to lose its lustre. Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas get the nod from me tbh, and not too much else.

Well now that you've got so many orders, don't hesitate to sit back and watch TV for a little. I know I have enough trouble getting 5 things shipped, let alone 150. I won't mind if mines a bit behind.

Still working on it, but it's coming.

Is that a record?

Oh yeah. On a typical Thursday we might have to deal with 10 orders. You guys blew the record out of the water. Gotta go though. Cause, you know.

Once a year is great, and if you wanted to add a 2nd time just have it be for Christmas.

I am leaning in this direction now. Maybe we should time it around Thanksgiving. That way, folks who don't celebrate Christmas don't feel neglected, and also isn't the day after Thanksgiving usually when people go shopping for Christmas anyway?

Oh yeah, Black Friday Epstein's Day! We could all stand at the ready by our computers and place our orders together right at 4 A.M. It'll be a virtual stampede of tool junkies all trying to get his or her order placed first in an attempt to secure a $5 36" Wilde pry bar or a $25 Armstrong ratchet. :lol_hitti

In all seriousness, I wouldn't be opposed to a Black Friday Epstein's Day. I wouldn't even care if they offered deals. I just love the fact that they are a great company who proudly admits COO on all their products.

I worked in 2 different medium size mail order companies from 1989-2001.
Growth is painful, and I want you guys to realize this may have pushed them almost to the breaking point.
Please expect some delay and some backorders or cancellations, for instance if they have old stock it may not be available for them to resupply.
They also may be surprised at the wholesale cost of restocking some of the items if they haven't stocked them recently.

I for one will give them a very long leash and am hoping this will be a catalyst to update their website with better navigation and a better reflection of what they have available.
I also would think they would be a lot better off to not have too many big days like this followed by month after month of 10 orders/day.
It would be better to bump their daily order tally to 20-30 than to have 200 orders a couple times a year. I like the July 4th theme, once per year is my vote, it will keep it fun and robust, and many of us will hopefully place reorders without expecting to be part of a flash mob.

I'm a little hesitant to direct organized attention to one retailer. I have been a loyal customer of Epsteins for some time and ordered from them at work. Now that I am retired I have problems justifying too many new tools. They are an excellent company and they have gone above and beyond in some of our dealings.
I also order some farming supplies from a small retailer that carries US made goods whenever they can. I order jeans from Texas jean company, made in USA (but not Texas). My work gloves come from Carolina glove company, again US made. Boots from Weinrenner USA . Coats and such from a Canadian company, socks from another US company. In short everything I can comes from the US.

I would propose a day every so often to place orders from selected US companies and retailers and of course Epsteins would be one. It would be difficult to organize, but might make more of an impact.

My two cents.

I placed a nice order on the fourth from Epsteins, and it was a good idea, but I for one would hesitate to select one company from the many that are trying to do similar work.

I like this Idea. Every so often have a Garage Journal day where we buy from a company that is committed to America. Maybe have Labor Day be buy from ________ day?

Lots of good points being raised here.

I am going to give Jori some time to deal with all the work he has. Then I am going to send him a PM and ask him how he feels about some of the questions we are grappling with here. Then I'll go from there. The last thing I want to do is to burden these guys or cause them any problems.

As for supporting other small companies, it sounds like a fine idea in principle. HJE seems so easy to do and is so personally gratifying because Jori is a member here and they deal in the meat and potatoes of what us tool-obsessed types crave.

Once I hear from him down the line, I'll come back to you guys with this and we'll see if it's going to be a once or twice a year thing.

My hope is that beyond the blitz, people have become long-term customers of HJE and might help those monthly order totals throughout the year.

I sent my order in on the Fourth. It was a fun catalog to browse through and it gave me a chance to buy some odds and ends I forget to buy elsewhere.

Late to the party but I really am happy I placed the order. Actually have a few more things to order in the months ahead. Glad this idea came to fruition! I'm sure HJE appreciates the business no matter how busy they are the next few days.

My favorite part was the checkout pages and the fact I can send them a check (easy for tax purposes). How cool is that?!?

Thanks for the concern, but after digging into the orders today, I'm going to say that we are going to ship all the orders out by the latest on Monday. Except of course for the box art requests, which is going to take a little longer. Especially for some of the very "specific" requests (and I think you know who you are) :) If we have any shortages we'll contact you individually, but I think we're doing pretty good right now.

Also, I think once a year for Epstein's day is just fine with us. I would also encourage you guys to direct your new found power at other businesses that sell/support US manufacturing.

Jori,

Got a chance to read post #412 yet? Since your downtown, I am wondering if you have heard when are they reopening the areas around you?

Oh, sorry. Must've missed it. Yeah, it wasn't too bad today. Only street I know that's closed around us is Main and I think it's because of some water issue. I'll look at your order tomorrow and make sure we have everything and send you a PM.

I am amazed that you are going to be able to ship that fast! :willy_nil
With the deluge of orders I thought it would be nearly certain that stuff would get back ordered and some orders would be unable to be filled while the rest got delayed. Don't push yourself too hard! (Says the man anxiously waiting for his set of three Armstrong 994 ratchets! )

Thanks for all the hard work and great tools!

Lots of good points here. For my own part, I fully expected some kind of delay with the deluge of orders...no big deal...all part of the fun of dealing with a smaller vendor, and there are perks that go with that as well, so it's understood.

This was my first order with them, reason being I was turned off by the navigation previously. I've spent more than I care to share on tools lately, but until the 4th, never with HJE. Even on the 4th, after 30 minutes of clicking around, I only bought one thing totaling $95. That probably would have been doubled with better site navigation and without a doubt, it would bring me back more frequently as well. I have probably only browsed through less than 1/10th of what they offer.

That said, I love some of the quirks as well. The paper receipt on checkout is just plain cool for someone that orders almost everything online. Don't lose that!

If you thought the navigation of the site was unique, you need to visit the store if possible. The site is easy, but I love the walks down a real memory lane and picking up items that are hard to get but needed.

Well, so it shall be written. July 4th is hereby reserved for the annual Epstein's Day, and we can use other days of the year to identify comparably deserving USA-focused and maybe family-run businesses. Maybe we should start a committee.

If you get overwhelmed (or just plain tired of box art), feel free to skip the box art on mine. I'll be happy either way. I referenced my username here in the order comments.

Thanks, but everyone is getting what they requested. Box art will just take a little longer. :)

PS

You guys sure like those Wilde pry bars and armstrong ratchets!

It would interesting to see what percentage of all the orders placed on Wednesday contained Wilde pry bars or an Armstrong ratchet. Seems like everyone got atleast one of them.
