This is my first shot at a vise restore. The vise is a Wilton Shop King that came from my Grandfathers garage after he passed away. I've had it in my garage for a couple of years, not really knowing what I wanted to do with it. Then I thought, why not restore it, and give it back to my father. This vise was in my grandfathers garage from the early late 50's until 2010 when he passed away. I restored it, and gave it to my dad this past Fathers day, and he knew exactly where it came from as soon as he opened the box.

The only thing is, I can't convince him to mount it on the other end of his bench and use it. He is building a special shelf for it above his bench, He doesn't want to scratch it. My 7yr old son asked if it can go on his work bench someday, I never thought a bench vise would turn into a family heirloom, but I guess it has.

The resto was pretty easy, took it apart, and soaked parts in lacquer thinner for a few days. Cleaned up dings and gouges with a file and a 4" grinder. Then on the machined surfaces, I cleaned them up with a flap disk, then wet sanded them and polished them up to look like chrome. I thought it looked good with the art deco style of the vise. Painted it with Rustoleum paint, and here it is.

sorry about the crappy pics, and the lack of in progress pics, but the pics were kind of an after thought. The before pic was taken when I almost listed it on Ebay. (glad I never did it)

I'm glad you never listed it on eBay either. Nice restoration.

great job!
your lettering is fabulous

A couple questions:

is that the rustoleum sunrise red? How long to dry?

Does that flap disk remove weld spatter that has penetrated a slide a hair?

Did you paint the underside of the vise and the top of the base where they come together to swivel? Was wondering how you handled that.

what were your wetsanding and polishing steps? grits, etc.

Not only is that a great resto but an awesome vise.

I have an ugly old Wilton of my (maternal) grandfather's that I use often. If it was a vise like the Shop King I would likely restore it and display it as well.

I'm not sure what the exact color is, but it dried in the sun in a couple of hours. Not sure exactly, I painted it in the morning, and it was dry when I came home for lunch. The underside and swivel were both painted and then coated with a little grease as I assembled it.

The flap disc will remove weld splatter.

An interesting thing with the paint is that it actually ended up with a "crinkle" effect. I primed it the night before I painted it, and must not have waited long enough for the primer to dry. The crinkle was uniform, and kind of looked like an industial type finish. Reminds me of the type of finish on the early SK socket set boxes. I liked how looked, so I left it like that.:lol_hitti

The polishing was done with a worn out flap disc first, then I used 150,220,320,400,600,1200, then some metal polish paste that I bought at a car show years ago. I didn't go crazy with it, as I thought it was going to be used. It's shiny, but no where near a good quality polish job.

That look amazing. I have a shop king sitting on my bench right now. Wish it had a family history like yours. I need to do a restore on it. Any tips on getting the thing apart?

Very nice job on a very beautiful vise. I love the lower step lines. Very art deco.

I keep thinking I need to do that to my Shop King also, but if I went that far I might not use it any more. What is the jaw width on yours? The one I have is 5" wide. Mine has the history of yours also.

Getting it apart was pretty straight forward, the whole thing can be disassembled in a few minutes.
