7 way plug to a 4 wire plug on trailer.

My truck has a 7 way round plug receiver for trailering (6 with one in the center), but my trailer only has a four way flat. I'd like to hook up the spare 7 way plug i have to the wiring harness on my trailer. How do i find out where each of the four wires should be connected to the 7 way?

(i hate adapters and i already have a spare 7 way plug)

to me "adapting" is rigging. I'm wiring direct- I'm unrigging.

Maybe a little

I carry an adapter in my glove box in case the need to tow a trailer without brakes arises.
However I do have one trailer with a round plug and no brakes as well

It may not be rigging in his case. That is if he never wants to loan the trailer out, or come the time he wants to sell it. Or pull it with any other truck that does not happen to have a trailer plug set up for brakes. I have the same plug and have never had a problem with the adapters. One that I have bought, or ones that I have engineered. My time to wire that plug up would be worth more than the cost of an adaptor to get the same results.

If he wants to wire something up, how about a plug on the truck side that has the four flat, the five flat, and the seven round all in one.

I have towed so many different things that trailer plug adaptors are just like the assortment of hitches and ball sizes that I have.

I have this on my truck. It lets me pull my small 4 wire and my 7 wire trailers without adapters and without a 7 wire on my small trailer. Since pretty much no one uses the 6 wire round it makes it so I can pull pretty much any trailer.

All late model trucks and SUVs with a tow package (most do) have a 7 pin plug so it is actually more convenient to have that style plug over the 4 pin.

Its nice have both 4 & 7 pin hook ups right from the factory, not to mention a plug in from the brake controller under the dash.

Trailers that do not have trailer brakes are supposed to have a 4 pin plug. Also trailers under a specified GVW have to have a 4 pin plug. Trailers over a specified GVW must have a DOT 7 pin plug with trailer brakes and a break away emergency plug to apply the brakes in the event of an unhook. So in fact you are rigging it and my well get a ticket for doing so depending on the state you are in.

I came here seeking neither permission nor approval, but rather for instructions on how to do what i want done to MY trailer. It carries a specific piece of equipment (permanently attached to the trailer) which i would never loan out, and it will only be pulled by my truck. The trailer does not have brakes. I have the wiring info i wanted now. thanks

Hey, I'm just letting you know what may happen if a DOT agent spots it. That ticket is $250.00 if I remember right and the trailer will be left right where the ticket was issued until it is fixed or a flatbed hauls it away for you.

Oh please, a DOT ticket for having more pins on the connector than wires on the trailer? I can see it the other way around, but there's no way they would issue a ticket for a 7-pin connector on a 4-wire trailer. I'd love to see some sort of documentation on that one anyhow and as it would apply to a private (non-commercially used) trailer.

Where in the world would a DOT inspector have to be hanging out to spot it to begin with? Talk about grasping at straws.....

I wouldn't be surprised.
Most states will ticket you for towing a trailer with a rating higher than your tow vehicle rating even if it's empty and weighs less than the tow vehicle's tow rating. It's all about the money.
