Harbor freight and snap on idea

Harbor freight's heavy duty ratchet line looks a lot like snap on's ratchets. Technically couldn't you buy a harbor freight ratchet and put a snap on rebuild kit in it? If so you'd have a really nice 1/2" ratchet for $30

I read somewhere that the IR rebuild kit works for the old model HF Earthquake impact wrenches. Sometimes HF makes exact copies after the patent expires. Take some measurements and if it matches, try it and let us know. The one thing I can justify buying from snap on is their wrenches right now. I would love to have an alternative.

Btw, I bought the 3/8" & 1/2" Heavy Duty Composite Ratchets and I love them. Wouldn't abuse it with a pipe for more leverage on stuck bolts but gets the job done on normal stuff.

Its true VAG group has transformed SKODA into a value for money/quality mass producer of family cars in Europe (along with SEAT).

They do tend to use tried and trusted technology from older VW/Audi models whilst leaving the latest innovations to the German brands in the stable.

This is probably the best family car VAG currently produce, I dont know if they sell them in the USA but they should.

i doubt this would work, and if it did i dont think the HF handle would hold up as good as a snap on one, would be a niceway to get a decent ratchet on the cheap tho

Alright seeing as I dont have a SO ratchet could someone measure their 1/2" internals. I'm gonna measure my HF if they are close i'll order a rebuild kit and try it. Sorry if this disturbs all the snap on fans.

HF heavy duty ratchet. It has 36 teeth and they are 1.5" wide. The pawl is 2 cm wide. Lets get a snap on's measurements

Go for it. If it upsets someone I think that is a good thing.

I'd like to help you with a measurement but I have an older snap on half in drive ratchet so measuring it would be of no value

The only thing on that ratchet that looks similar to a snap on dual 80 is the handle. The HF ratchet cover plate is held in by a retaining ring like a craftsman, the snap on is screwed on flush. The snap on is a dual 80 pawl setup which I'm going to guess won't work with the HF. If it does then great but I'm having some doubts.

HF is not held on by a retaining ring although in the picture it is. Maybe thats not the right ratchet oh well. Mine is held on by two torx screws and has a plate the same as the snap on ratchet

When a company knocks off another companies product, they can measure parts to know the size of features on one or several parts but there is no way to know what the tolerance is for each dimension, so its a **** shoot as to whether parts will fit.

To know it? no you're right. To make a damn close guess? yes that is possible.

Take a company that uses the six sigma method. You can measure a sample of products and from that, take the standard deviation, find the sixth, and basically you can 'estimate backward' what their tolerances were likely to be. Instead of it being within six sigma of a design spec, you are going to within six sigma of what actually came out of the factory. Not 100% the same thing but in the real world, it's close enough. And before someone says 'the math doesn't come out exactly right' I will tell you, the math does not come out exactly right, so you have to use your brain. Standard equipment for many engineers.

Considering any tolerances are going to have to basically be industry-standard anyway, unless there is a specifically patented manufacturing process that allows for better ones. And if so, you would know it because it would be patented.

For example, let's say Ford & GM both measure their cylinder bore to within +/- .000001 inch. Why would you assume Toyota can't also? Or Mercedes? The same machinery, tooling, processes are available to all of them. It is possible for them all to do it. Maybe some do not keep it that tight, but the fact that they could, you could design and specify the knockoff's tolerances to be slightly tighter anyway if it is reasonable.

Are they likely manufacturing knock off products with tighter tolerances? no. Are they able to do the same? very likely. Are they actually doing it anywhere close? I have no idea, this is all hypothetical.

I like the composite wrenches linked earlier.
