I am finally feed up with air hoses running across the garage floor and having to roll them up. I want to purchase a automatic air hose reel, prefer USA made, tell me 3/8 or 1/2???? 50ft or 100ft my shop is 30x50, this is not for business purpose, just a weekend wrencher.

Also, post up a pic where yours is mounted

3/8" line is plenty for general purpose air tools. 1/2" is rather bulky, I use it as feed line from my compressor to black pipe and from the pipe to my hose reel itself. Ideally if you need air on the other side of the garage often, particularly for high volume tools, you're better off running some kind of pipe instead of using a long hose.

I just have a manual hose reel, so I can't help you there.

I bought a Coxreels EZ-Coil 3/8"x50'. It works for me. I like the lower retraction speed of it compared to the standard ones. It's less "whippy". I think it was ~$260 with free shipping.

All I can tell you is from the research I've done in the past, a good quality, made in the USA automatic air hose reel will cost a couple of hundred $ or more. As a weekend warrior myself, I decided that kind of money could be better used on other things and I just deal with manually rolling it up.

I did first try to get away with an inexpensive Asian made unit and was once again reminded, you get what you pay for. It lasted about 6 months of very mild use before it broke and would no longer reel in the hose.

Coxreel P-LP-350 or the EZ Coil version EZ-P-LP-350. 3/8" x 50'. USA made in Arizona. The EZ coil reduces the rewind rate by uo to 80% and eliminates the hose whipping and damaging your prized car or truck. It should outlive you and yes I am biased. I have sold them for 20 years and I use them in my shop.

It is worth the money to go with a Reelcraft or Coxreel, I bought a HF version several years ago and it didn't make it through 6 uses before it didn't work right. Keep an eye on ebay for dented new reels for $100-$200 to your door. I've also bought a few Jupiter reels that are china made but just as good if not better then the few reelcrafts I bought. There was a guy with a ton of Cox reels selling for around $100 before shipping but they may have all sold.

50' for a 50' shop works nicely when placed near the center, either hose size will work.

My personal opinion is either get the 12 buck harbor freight manual one or blow a few 100 bucks on a reelcraft.

I am fond of the commercial grade units, and have found two so far at bargain prices. One, a Reelcraft, and one a Lincoln. They are almost indestructable, easily rebuildable (o-rings and spring end are about all that wear out), and turn up a few times a year on C/L.
I am still watching for a third . . .

Make your 1st one your last one. Spend the $$ and get a Cox reel. GOOD stuff aint cheap, and CHEAP stuff aint good. Craigslist is your friend, if you have the time to chase it down.

I would buy the Coxreels. I have four Reelcrap reels in my shop. The price was too good to pass up. I got three new reels free from work. I consider them to be the low end of commercial quality reels. If I were paying real money, I'd buy the Coxreels.

The Goodyear 46741 that cbracer recommended is the best Air hose reel I've tried so far. A must have in the garage.

Thanks, glad to hear it. I haven't used mine yet.... but the company who made it seems to stand behind it, and it was one of the few with two arms one on each side of the reel. So I figured it would be stronger and it was nicely built. It's also blue to match my future garage ;)

Screw hose reels. I hate them. I'm currently working out of an old shop that was just used for storage for a long time till recently when they began cutting out walls and putting in lifts etc. They asked me where I wanted them to put the hose reel and I told them just to put a hook on the wall. So now I just have a single large J hook like what's used for bikes about 5' up the wall. It's a lot faster and easier to undo a few huge hoops than dicking around with a reel. For most uses I only need to undo 3 loops. If I want the whole length I can just pull the whole thing off the hook and spill it onto the floor in 2 seconds.

I'll take a pic tomorrow if I remember.

Something like this mounted 5' up on a wall

Plus you can't argue with the price.

I've been loving my Reelworks 50' 3/8 that I got from northern tool. I had a $20 off $100 coupon so I bought a few extra parts while I was there, came out to a good deal. I just use it in my garage, but it is sooo much nicer than having to uncoil a 50' hose every time I want to use it, then roll it back up and hang it on the wall when I'm done.

It has fairly high reviews on Northern Tool, otherwise I probably wouldn't have tried it.

I bought that same one and modified it with a USA Goodyear hose and drilled it out for more flow....check it out:

For those still looking, this closeout from Sears on an EZ Coil 3/8"x50' reel can't be beat. At just under $140, it's less than 1/2 price. I bought 2 of them last week and they were here on Monday

Cox Reel Closeout

Im really considering picking up one of these. Seems like.a good price. Is this a good buy? My garage is only 20x20 so 25' should be enough right?

Yeh, They are 25'...I also ordered a couple of 50' reels from Global last week and got the lengths crossed up.... They are a great and should reach anywhere in your garage you will need. They can be ceiling mounted or wall mounted (or for that matter, floor or worktable mounted) by moving the hose support.

Very cool tip. If mine ever leaks or has issues I saved that thread. I don't have any major air demands for it, mostly use it with an air nozzle cleaning parts, fill tires, maybe the occasional impact gun. I also make sure to let all the pressure out of the lines when I'm done.

Did your original hose start leaking or wear excessively on you? I ended up buying a 50' Goodyear hose at the same time because they were on sale and was planning on cutting it to make a short run between the reel & my hard line, but ended up not needing it because I found a short piece I already had.
