Partial update on my newest Reed 204R from last weekend. Paint has dried and lettering finished. The rest will be polished this week and assembled before the weekend when i'll have a few more projects to acquire:evil:

I like it! I'm gradually moving away from tool grey, but I still like seeing tools in grey.

Garage sale find, Woden 186B/6 (stationary base 6" wide jaw). Vise is a beast, need to clean up and put to use.

I too am getting a bit burnt out on black or grey but i don't keep many of the vises i refinish so i keep future customers in mind.

Not too many buyers are going to want a very brightly colored vise. :eyecrazy:

What? You don't think that would sell well in pink?

Beautiful find, I love how stout and uncompromising they are. I have a 6" Paramo that is very similar and they are impressive pieces to be sure.

y'all laugh, I would put money that a pink vise would sell. Pink cars sell, pink tool boxes and screwdrivers, etc sell. I would like to have a few different colors of the same model and see what goes first.:rocker:

My small addition to the small clamp-on vises I seem to be accumulating...

I wasn't going to get it yesterday, but the guy tossed it on top of the other things I was getting, after I had dropped it back on his table at the asking price, and made a much better combined deal...

It's identical in construction to a Millers Falls My son fixed up, but no makers marking so far and those may have been on a sticker,and/or made for someone else... My son's MF had a mark on the head of the main screw, but this one does not...

I got a good one at a flea market today. It is a Starrett 924. I wasn't planning to spend more than a few dollars on odd tools, after just coming home from 2 days at the Case knife show. He wouldn't budge off of $75, but he did agree to throw in the extra heavy Williams C clamp. Someone was beating, or cheating on the handle at one time, but it is not hurt, still tight and crisp. #57

Does your daughter need a new Hello Kitty vise?:D

I might end up doing something wild with my next vise since i have been keeping it tame.

I did paint my Prentiss Gipsy a metallic red which was pretty unique

Well, the one that did need a vise painted it a dark blue, the other younger one would go with black for sure... :p

(The younger one is a semi goth/nerd/4.0 student that took College level classes (for credit) in her Junior year in HS... :willy_nil Don't ask me, I'm merely her father.)

Not sure about the date on that Sears vise, I don't remember seen any marked "Sears" in the Craftsman/Sears tool catalogs I have access too.

But a good deal for only 7 bucks!

Here's my second restoration job, this one a smaller Wilton, model Cadet 9135.

3 1/2" jaws, open to 4 1/2", ringing in at 18 pounds dry.

When I picked it up she was missing both of the swivel tighten levers on the base, and Nightshift here was kind enough to help get her going - thanks once again sir.

Any guess as to the year on this one? The metal stamp on the bottom of the slide is not quite legible.

Cheers,
David

That Cadet is nice!! Mostly 50's early 60's and your restore is excellent!

Body is stamped 504-M2 with a 6 stamped over the 5. Base is stamped 604. My girlfriend said the guy she bought it from said it has been in his family since it was new. It will be getting refurbished, the purple isn't doing it for me.

My Morgan reanimation.

I got it at a yardsale with some other tools for next to nothing. It was definitely rough around the edges (static jaw welded on:dunno:) and missing the swivel base, but it's a good 'ole higher quality vise. I couldn't see it make it to the scrap yard....so I bought the puppy home.:D

I gave it a molassas bath for starters. After that I added a piece of round stock to hold the lead screw nut in place since the original one was MIA :dunno:. The welded jaw had me at a cross roads. It was a good solid weld, but I was REALLY thinking about grinding it off. My concern was that the PO cut the center mounting section off to accomodate the "other" soft jaw. I decided to grind it down and leave it alone. I used my cutting wheel to make gnarl marks in it. I know it's ghetto, but I was all out of ideas. I just need to wire wheel the paint off, and get new scews for the dynamic jaw. The old one were trashed, and the new ones need to be flat headed and a little smaller.

I mixed up the paint from some green lying around the shop, but added a little white to give it the aged look:pimpflash. I finished it off with a #00 Mack fineline pinstripe brush using One Shot lettering enamel. It's been quite some time since I've tried it, but it turned out OK. I'm still no sort of pinstripers. I have a couple of friends that are exceptional at it.

All in all it's leaps and bounds better than it was. I think I'm gonna keep it and mount it on one of my toolboxes. This 'ole Morgan deserves it.:rocker:

I have a Record No. 6. They're all related. I've used Records for over 40 years and wouldn't use anything else ... well maybe a Woden or a Paramo.

Nice. I picked up the bigger version, a mint 926 about 2 months ago that weighs 205 lbs.

Is this vise 100 yrs old?

Finally had some time to look over the vises I got a while back. Anyone know any info on this old Reed 104? I can't find any date stamped in it, only the letters shown below on the front/bottom of the slide. Someone ground the bottom lip down and it has some file marks up top but it opens/closes like butter, one finger operation. How long are patents pending? The vise has this cast in it:

Pat. Dec. 24, 1912
Patent Pending

I have a 104 with the second pat. date @ Aug 11, 1914, (As well as the same 1912 date) so I would say yours is sometime between 1913 and say 1915 to allow them time to change the casting molds. Mine would obv. be sometime after 1914/15...

Nice find!

Here are some pictures of my dad's Woden #3. He bought it new in the 60's. It has a little rust on it now but it still looks pretty good after all the years I beat up on it.

Here are my 3 vices. the first is a 6inch Dawn.Australia's premium vice.
Next a English 5 inch Record. Then an asian cheapie 6 inch which I use for light work.
The Dawn is rather exposed to the elements at times.I think it must be about 40 years old. I bought it s.hand about 30 years ago..It does all the heavy work.

I just picked this one today. It's raining 104's in this joint:shocking:!!!

I got it off of CL for $40. It's in really good shape considering the age. I'm gonna keep this one for myself (I keep saying that).

I am wondering if they were originally green. Mine has a similar green on it mixed in with the rust.

man, yours is in great condition, way less wear than mine and you scored on that price! any idea what year it was made? I was going to sell mine but since I found out it's almost 100 yrs old I decided to keep it and sell a newer one... it's hard being poor, having to decide which vise to keep and which to sell...lol
