At the flea market this weekend I came across a large Athol vise for $20. At least 100lbs. The guy selling it said it had a broken pin and he did not get arround to fixing it prior to the flea market so he just wanted $20. He said he would normally fix it and get $100 all day long but he just did not want to take it home. I did not bite since I was not sure. Sound like an excuse to sell an unfixable vise? What pin could he have been talking about?

Why didn't you ask him to show you what he was talking about? As long as the castings and jaws are good, you can always make new small parts.

If it's still there next weekend, inquire more!

I was at one end of the flea market and my car was at the other. It was a big flea marketI just had no motivation to look at it further. I will probably probe deeper if I see him again.

There's a pin that holds the main nut into the body. If that's what's broken, it's a $.15 fix and you'd have a $150 vise for $20.

At 100 lbs it's worth $10 in scrap. So worse case you're out $10. Skip lunch and you're even again.

Go get that vise. Create a thread.

I will look for it this weekend. It is a big flea market so there is no shortage of stuff to buy. At the time my reaction to his story was like..."yeah.right. good story. On to the next seller".
