Saw a ad this weekend for a Snap-On box and side box this weekend on Craigslist. I called, and made the deal for the box at a price that was $100 less than he was asking. He originally wanted $400 for it, but when I got there, I realized that it was in rougher shape than the original pictures indicated. It is date coded 1979, and it is absolutely the heaviest box that I have ever moved. I was going to pass on it, and he offered it to me for $200, so I figured that as long as I was already there, I might as well take it home. It barely fit into the back of my Explorer, and I had to use my loader to get the top box onto the bottom cart. I will need a ladder to find anything that makes it into the top compartment. It will take some time to clean it up, but it will make a great box when it is done.

Whats new?:lol_hitti

I am very jealous man. I need storage badly and would kill to have that setup for that price. I can never get to those deals quick enough, or I don't have the money at the time.

Nice score, even if it is painted over. For $200, a little elbow grease and some fresh paint, that thing will be a dandy.

It came from a closed body shop, so I guess that they shot it with red paint at sometime in its past life. It is full of body shop dust, and the slides are going to need a good cleaning and oiling. The bottom drawer front will need some body work as well. He gave me a key for the box, but it doesn't work. Must be for some other box that he had. While it was on its back in the car, I noticed that the casters have grease fittings on them, but it has never been greased. The multi directional caster has two fittings. I am just going to clean it up and use it, I doubt that I will ever get to doing a "restoration" on it. Now, I need to buy some more tools ........................

I forgot to show you the inside of the side box. It has 3 small drawers and 2 large shelves.
My wife, who has found the last 3 boxes that I have bought just asked me what I am going to do with them all. Originally, I had 3 rolling boxes, but they were all crowded, and I couldn't find anything. Now I have enough boxes to put everything in an orderly fashion, but I will probably be opening and closing drawers just to find exactly what I want. Once this is for certain, the flat blade screwdrivers will no longer share the same drawer as the Phillips blades.

Hey guys...Newbie here. Very nice buy. I just picked up a Snap on Combo off Craigslist here in Atlanta...7 drawer bottom box and 12 drawer top box. I already had the exact same top box...so I sold the extra one...and when all was said and done...had the bottom box for only $100 out of pocket! So now I have a Snap on 7 drawer bottom, 3 drawer middle, and 12 drawer top box...for $500 total. All made in '83 and '84 and all boxes in excellent shape.

I'm a bit of a toolbox collector...have the Snapons...couple of Craftsman rollaways, couple of Waterloo rollaways...and various other boxes. I usually buy them, clean them up and repaint them. By that point, I've put too much into them to sell them so I keep them. Yep...it's a sickness!

Very cool box and one hell of a price! All she needs is some TLC and she will be good as new! I personally love projects like this and I would love to find a similar deal to have an early brother to the combo I currently have.

Consider doing a write up on your toolbox restorations. Any tips or tricks?

I picked up a few boxes at a friends, relatives estate sale. I bought for one box (five boxes, if you can count the taskforce junk they threw in), for $35. I plan on keeping the one, fixing the others, then throwing some junk tools in them and garage sale them.

As far as tips on toolbox restoration...if I'm going to sand one down and repaint it, I try to

1) get a box that is worth putting my time and money into...something that is well made and will look nice when I'm done. Most of the effort is in your labor, but you still can spend $30-50 easy on paint/primer/sandpaper/drawer liners, etc.

2) something that isn't beat to hell and dented up...where the drawers close well and just needs a fresh coat of paint for the most part.

I did my first ones in '96...3 drawer Waterloo rollaway from the '70s that used to be in a hospital and a 2 drawer Craftsman top chest from the '60s. They came out so well, that occasionally I'll buy another toolbox and redo it. I like to pick up different styles. I've done seven in all. I sandblasted the first two...but since then I've just hand sanded or used a ryobi sander. You still have to hand sand corners and stuff like that. One of them, a small two drawer box, I took to a paint stripper and had them completely strip it. That was cool...but gets very cost prohibitive with a box of any size.

Some of them I've repainted everywere...inside, outside, and underside of drawers...others, just the drawer faces and the inside. Depends on how bad it needs it.

When I'm done, I buy black rubber carpet runner...from either home depot or lowes...usually HD...and custom cut my drawer liners from this. Also do some measurements and plan before I start cutting so I can get the maximum number of drawers done with what they give. If you're doing a standard craftsman rollaway toolbox, this stuff is perfect because it comes in rolls 6' X 27". I was able to do my complete snap on 7 drawer rollaway in two rolls of this stuff. It sells for $10.97/roll. These liners are better than anything you can buy...at least what I've seen...and relatively cheap.

I've only used spray paint...nothing too elaborate...but would like to try my hand doing a more professional job with a paint gun. Even just using the spray paints though, I've been very pleased by how well they've turned out. Fortunately the snap on boxes I've bought recently are in good enough shape that they won't require any major work...just some touch up in a few spots.

Which leads me to a question...Snap on sells touch up paint for their boxes, correct?

About how much would it be...and do they sell it in regular spray paint size...12 oz? I've looked all over, and can't find anything close enough to the snap on color in conventional hardware stores. I'm sure that was planned!

I would just get it matched or use the "official" paint code from Snapon (PPG Ditzler Wet Spray Number 73504) or PPG Powder Number AR320 Resin (for powder coating).

Any local automotive paint jobber should get you fixed up with paint and usually can put it in a paint can if you want to apply that way.

Atta Boy! I am glad to have someone else give my standard answer for a change!

No Problem! Thats what we are here for! I am in the process of redoing a 80's vintage service cart with two drawers; I've got it sanded down. Hopefully, I will paint it soon!

I've got the same box at work, only difference is roller bearing drawers, and I paid 3500 or so in 1989!
If it's covered in overspray, you could try buffing it with heavy duty compound.

It got a quick repaint at the body shop a long time ago. Today, I tried to clean one drawer slide, and gave up. I will need to remove each slide, and give them a good cleaning in the parts washer. I just don't know how to remove the slides from the inside of the box. I will need to investigate that when I am ready to start working on this box. I intend to give it a good cleaning, but I don't think that it will be worth doing a restoration on it. My first move will be to power wash the drawers and insides of the box on a hot day, so it will dry before it will rust. Once I get all the body shop dust gone, it will be a lot easier to evaluate what to do next. Right now, it is about #50 on the priority list...... :lol_hitti

Two weeks ago I got a great deal on a snap on rollaway, so I figured that would be it for toolboxes for awhile. Well, found another deal that I couldn't resist...10 drawer Waterloo box from the early '70s...in great shape...can definitely use a repaint, but very usable as is. 34" width, 43" height and 18" deep. The guy I bought it from was a diesel mechanic and the original owner. He had changed out the original castors for much heavier duty ones. Awesome toolbox...the kind of quality you can't find today...for only $100. As the kids say..."it's the sh*t!"

So now I need to find some more tools to fill it up...

You're gonna have to get a digital camera because we want pictures of that box AND the casters.

Show us some pics! Inquiring minds want to know!

Okay...first time posting pics, so I'll try and get this right.

Used a piece of wood on the front and back to mount the castors to. He felt that was a better idea than simply have the castors mounted to the bottom. This gives the box a little more height...and makes it sturdy as hell.

Waterloo_castors.jpg

He had said the box was about 35 years old, but as you can see, 30 in September.

So no chemical stripping or sandblasting?

I guess I am just looking for an easy way to get into the corners.:rolleyes2

Just making things more difficult for myself (by giving myself yet ANOTHER project).

monster deal , that was a top of the line box in the day

I believe it. I've never seen one quite like that before...in person or on Ebay/Craigslist, etc. I have two other Waterloo rollaways, but they're both normal size, one with three drawers and a storage compartment, and a taller one with five drawers and a storage compartment. The three drawer was built in 1977, and the five drawer in 1981.

BKillian, that is a beautiful Snap on box!

Did you sandblast it or chemical strip it? How much in materials and time did it take you to get it looking that good?

That Waterloo box reminds me of vintage Mac Tools boxes; I wonder if they were made by the same company? Interesting, stuff! Nice restore on the Snap-On box; did you cut out and install/weld new pieces of sheet metal in the rusted out areas? The final product looks great! There is something really appealing about these vintage boxes; they are very spartan with minimal "chrome/bling" but the minimal look, is just cool! I guess all the chrome look that is related to Snap-On "style" came later in the 80s. Good deals and nice restoration!

I have to chime in here. I have a nice ( to me ) Waterloo.

I have not seen a waterloo of this style until Lookin4'67Galaxieconv post.

And what did I learn)))) Mines a 1976 model.

I love that Waterloo box. It has, for me, the best number of size and drawers that I've seen in a smaller box of that size.
