They come up fairly often around here. I guess it doesn't hurt that we are not too far away from where these works of art were manufactured. With that said, you guys have it easy with regards to rust. Rust is a necessary evil around here.

man, yours is in great condition, way less wear than mine and you scored on that price! any idea what year it was made? I was going to sell mine but since I found out it's almost 100 yrs old I decided to keep it and sell a newer one... it's hard being poor, having to decide which vise to keep and which to sell...lol

From the quick web lurking I did I think it's newer than yours due to the 4 mounting holes. I'm thinking 40's. I think they changed the shape of the ball where the handle goes through after that to a flat one. Also, mine doesn't have a PAT. date stamped on it.

Check back a few pages and look for the pictures i posted while on vacation. I think the date was somewhere near July 5 or 6th.

I found a Reed 104 in the workshop of my girlfriends family vacation home. It appeared to be black but had a deep green hue to the paint. I didn't notice any drip or runs so it looked original. Maybe they painted them in a variety of colors

the yellow on mine is overspray. those are bad pics but the only real paint I can find is on the back of the static jaw and it is black. I will try to get better pics as I restore it here soon.

Wilton 9450

This is how so many posts around here start: I got lucky responding to a big vise post on Craigslist.

The fellow pulled it out of his trunk at an Autozone and it actually turned out to be decent. $50 later I got my first larger Wilton, albeit dirty as hell and with one clearly busted replaceable jaw.

Here are a few pics of it as received and after a good wipedown to remove grime and grease.

She has not had a particularly easy life, but I believe this one's gonna be my keeper. I've been patiently waiting for a 9450 to come around.

Any tips on where best to source a replacement jaw or two?

Finally finished reassembling my Record No. 5 after stripping and repainting. Went with red since I'm keeping this one, and seem to have an affinity for it.

Here are some before and after pics of a much abused Record No.4. As you can see this had a hard life. I treated it to a new set of jaws (which cost me twice what I paid for the actual vise). Also picked up a nice Record mini table vise, I'll post pics later!

Okay so I was going to try and find an old rust bucket to restore, but this vise just spoke to me and I had to have it. It's an old Ridgid 41 (My guess is a re-branded Columbian or Desmond?)... It is in excellent shape, just a few little light dings but the jaws are near perfect. Puts the old 3-1/2 Craftsman to shame... TO SHAME!!!

Now I just need to find me an old Reed 3C or 4C... mmmmm....

Matt, you have some nice stuff, includingwhat i think is a wagon tongue vise. They were clamped on the tongue for field blacksmithing.

First proper post after the introductions thing.

I got to thinking whilst at work today and I realised how many vices we had there, so since no-one else was around to hinder me, I got the phone out and got snapping.

Welcome to England, where I hope you like music 'cause I've got a whole load of 'Records' to play for yo bad jokes over, onward!

First up, cause its mounted to my bench, battered Record Number 4.

Someone elses bench containing a Record Number 23

Two spare Record 23's under the lathe (plus spare anvil )

Big chunk of Record Number 112:

A good sized leg vice (un-marked, I did look for branding but saw none)

And a slightly smaller leg vice (again no makers mark). Second Record 112 in background on the bench:

And a funky little (well about 14" from jaws to hinge) clamp on (no marks either)

And just for giggles, a big chunky G-clamp with tommy bar holes. Probably about 16", maybe 12" between clamping surfaces.

There's another leg vice under one of the benches, but I couldn't be bothered digging that out, I think thats also unmarked.

It seems like there were a myriad of makes & models back in the day, although I hadn't seen any Toledos in this thread, yet.

"Northern King" is a new one to me. It definitely has Record origins. As for other Canadian vices, I have seen ones that have "RAE" and "Canada" cast into them ... also with Record origins.

The handle on yours looks like it might have been replaced. It looks to be in much better shape that the rest of the vice and the knobs don't look like the ones on Record vices.

That's a great find and neat that the guy kept you in mind.

I never found a pic of Desmond with T jaws but every thing else screams Desmond, the Steel Slide lettering, the front collar, the shape. The 41 is just icing on the cake. You have seen way more vises than me though!

FYI. Saw a Big Honkin Reed 109 on Ebay for sale. Wants $2k for it. I cannot afford it but would like to have it. Don't have room for it anyway.

That one was discussed in another thread. It's been welded on in several places. So, not only is the owner cracked, apparently the vise was at one time as well.

It does look like the handle was replaced, they seemed to have done a proper job of it as well. It's taking a bath in evaporust now, the next challenge is finding someone to make a set of jaws, I have a feeling this one will clean up nice.

mryyc - You might be able to use Record No. 3 jaws. I'll measure mine tonight and post the dimensions here.

My small addition to the small clamp-on vises I seem to be accumulating...

I wasn't going to get it yesterday, but the guy tossed it on top of the other things I was getting, after I had dropped it back on his table at the asking price, and made a much better combined deal...

It's identical in construction to a Millers Falls My son fixed up, but no makers marking so far and those may have been on a sticker,and/or made for someone else... My son's MF had a mark on the head of the main screw, but this one does not...

I too just found a vise very similar with no markings and it apperently had a sticker of some sort on it too... Who knows? But I like it and it was free
