I finally convinced the shop that we need a king pin press to do it the right way. We (the shop) spent $2600 on it. It is OTC and man this thing is great.

I used it for the first time today. A king pin job that pays 8 hours and took me 8 hours with a fire wrench and a BFH. I was able to knock out without using the torch in 3.75 hours for both sides.

I would recommend this tool for anyone that considered getting one of these. It will pay for itself in no time not to mention you don't have to get the axle red hot to do it.

Right tool for the job? pshaw, stop making sense!

Besides, it's not like you can damage the metal pieces by heating and cooling them rapidly.

I still have nightmares about my king pin job, and the bump on my hand to prove it. I really wish my shop had one when I needed it....

that beats the hell outta pulling a straight axle out and loading it up to take to work and press them out with a 75t press.

i've had to do it to more than one '67-'68 chevy vans i've owned

So would this work on 1/2 to 1 ton trucks?

It should. It comes with pins that are the same diameter as the pin on the shaft. I have came across smaller king pins in old Fords that this would work with.

Does it fit inside the fenderwell? It looks like kind of a big tool. :dunno:

That might be a problem, it is a big heavy tall piece. The shipping weight was 115 lbs. and if you take out some of the adapters it is about 100 lbs with the pump.

Sorry, just learned how to multi-quote.
