I too just found a vise very similar with no markings and it apperently had a sticker of some sort on it too... Who knows? But I like it and it was free

Is there a marking like "M-F" on the main screw head? if so, Millers falls (Who also used stickers on these...)

I was astounded neither my older brother nor my dad (both P.E.s) were interested in any of the great stuff my grandpa had tucked away in his garage. I, on the other hand, left no tool behind!

Spent the morning with the old man making a new stand for his new vise.

The old stand was about 1" too narrow to mount this bad boy on...

Tomorrow hopefully will get to clean off the rust and paint it.

What color/type of paint did you use on those vises? I'm guessing Rustoleum Hammered Verde Green for the Wilton. What about the others?

Sounds like an interesting job... And I believe the trojan came from another member here, I bought it off a kijiji ad, and made it my own. Here's a link to the page with it in the condition I got it in. I hand filed the jaws to get them square again, they were about 1/8" off at their worst. The brazing was strong, but sloppy, so I cleaned it up a bit.

I gotta' say I've seen some beautiful vises in this thread; those Wilton bullets are too cool, as industrial design goes.

I was happy with the Dunlap score, just because I needed a good bench vise but, I was really excited to find the Toledo pipe vise in a drawer below the work bench. At the time, my grandparents were being moved closer to my parents so, my grandpa was happy that anyone wanted to make a home for his tools. Today, now that he's been gone for a number of years, it's nice to have these utilitarian reminders.

Here's a shot of the other side of the Toledo; I believe the tri-color paint (red, blue, & orange) is original.

That Craftsman is basically unused. There isn't a single mark on that thing anywhere but lots of the original paint was scraped off. It didn't make any sense to me but i sure looks good.

Could just be a Brit that put the advert up, we spell it different over in sunny Britain.

Yes, the Willy is verde green. The Rae's are done in Rustoleum 7212 Light Blue hammered, which is very close to the original color. Cheers, Bill

Surprising how often you’ll find one that shows up in the Craigslist tool section with a search using the British and Australian spelling of “vice” but does not show up when the search uses the USA and Canadian spelling of “vise”. At least, it’s a fairly common occurrence with my CL searches which are really just for northern Indiana and southwest lower Michigan areas.

We're with the Brits & Aussies on this ... "vice". You are right though, when checking Craigslist or Kijiji I always use both spellings.

Seems like she was given a new coat of paint, the blue is covering up the hammered light pastel blue finish (you can see it still in some areas). Handle is straight as an arrow, and the jaw inserts are remarkably not marked or damaged at all.

Model is a 92, jaws are 4.5" wide, and open to about 8" (probably close to 9" as the model number suggests).

Need to find my battery charger for electrolysis, but I think I may just leave it as is. Hell, I flipped it upside down and discovered that the leadscrew is as fresh as it was from the factory, no rust. Previous owner kept it lightly oiled and maintained for sure. Even the base is relatively rust free!

Do I get an 'I ****'?

That is a 5" Wilton 1750 Mechanics Vise, if I'm not mistaken.

STARKEY'S VISE.

The fixed jaw is supported by two standards from the base piece, and has a square boxing or tube for receiving the slide of the movable jaw. This slide is hollow, and contains a rack which is engaged by a pinion on the short vertical shaft, which is supported by the fixed jaw. At the lower end of the vertical shaft there is a worm wheel, that is engaged by a worm on the horizontal shaft on which is placed the hand wheel. By turning the hand wheel the vertical shaft is rotated and the movable jaw is drawn against the object to be clamped by the vise.

I don't think i ever intended to start "collecting" vises but once you start looking them over, cleaning, rebuilding, restoring and seeing the work put into them, you realize that they are just as thought out as the finest quality ratchet or wrench. Not to mention they are just as unique! We have 250+ pages and lots of them are different models with new ones showing up daily.


I don't know if ill ever be able to assemble a throne of Wiltons like you have or be able to open Flatoonie's "Vise Smithsonian" but the collection is growing ever so slowly.

Ill let everybody know when i find a bunch or Reed 109's at a sale

Just to spanner my own works I've just picked up a nine inch Parkinson's woodwork vice, made in Yorkshire England that clearly states on its casting that its a "Vise".

It seems that you can always tell a Yorkshireman, but you can't tell him much

I suppose it may have been designated as an export model or possibly just that Yorkshiremen being awkward buggers (my father was one) they just dig their heels in and spelled it the way they wanted.

I just spent a little time going through this lengthy, but excellent, thread and I saw your previous posts re: this model.

I'm not sure how many color schemes "No. 763" wore over the production run although I imagine it was a few. If it helps, here's a full profile shot of mine, showing all the metal, top-to-bottom.

I have no way of knowing when my grandpa got this one; it seems to have been a drawer queen for a few years (or, decades?).
