I have been looking at rests for sighting in rifles. I currently have an MTM plastic model that doubles as a maintenance rest. It works OK for a maintenance rest but ***** for sighting in rifles. I just wanted to see what yall are using and whether I should buy a commercial Lyman type or build it. Show me what you are using!

You got's yer plastic ones.

You got's yer wooden ones.

You got's yer steel ones.

You got's yer cast iron ones.

You got's yer bag's o' shot or sand.

You got's yer huge f'n blob o' concrete ones.

Your call as to what's you want's ta do. :D

Trade-offs between cost - size - weight - portability - steadiness - durability

Field-rest for semi-informal plinking or sighting in? A 'field' bag. Maybe a front bag and a 'small' rear bag.

Little more 'serious' range/bench work? Front rest with adjustments and then a rear bag.

I have always used sand bag rests. To me they are quicker to adjust and there is almost "0" chance of damaging the finish on an expensive gun.

I have a couple of bags that I use for informal shooting from a table. But I wanted something that I can keep positioned better from shot to shot while sighting in, but is reasonably portable.

Here is one I built last year works real good, weighs about 25 lbs and has numerous adjustment for use on different size guns. This pic doesnt show the small shot bag on the front rest.

Yes it does adjusts for long or short rifles, has rear and front height adjustments, and side to side (level) adjustments. Even has an attached bubble level. The weight helps keep it steady on the lower calibers so repeatability is attained.
