I've never used atf/acetone. I use atf/mineral spirits a lot though. I like PB but hate the stank. If they could make it smell like cherry bomb hand cleaner I'd buy more of it. WD is just to thin.

I use Kroil and PB Blaster. They both work about the same in my opinion. Kriol seem to work better if you can let it sit for a while and work its way in.

Have any of you guys used Ballistol? It is unreal.

looove the smell :) it also child friendly - if you want to you can spray it into your mouth and it wont cause any harm.

Fluid Film also has a nice addictive smell =).

Thanks for all the replies. I will have to try some of the Kroil and maybe a few of the others as well. Especially the ATF acetone mix. I like that I can make that myself. Some have mentioned the torch, I have one of those but in some cases I cant use it on some projects.

it isn't that stuff that Menards had on sale for .99 cents a quart is it? I picked up some to give a shot. I think it smells like burnt ****** fluid. Something lube? With absolutely no useful info on the bottle or their website. I have a few things sitting in a jar of it as an experiment. Its going up against the kerosine mix I made. I emailed the company for more information and all i got was a call them. I cannot see the product being around long with the lack of info as to what it is and can do. I wasn't expecting such a horrible smell from a supposed natural product.

I use G96. It´s a gun treatment and has like Marvel Mystery Oil a great smelling. I would use it as eau de cologne if it wouldn´t be so oily... Works nice at rusty bolts, too :)

Sadly it´s not available here in Europe, so every time I have to ask my buddies to get me some when they go to USA.

I use the acetone / atf mix personally. I use a bit more acetone, more like 70/30, I feel it thins it more and allows it to soak in deeper, and use less oil! Most because if I can't get it out normally, I'll use a welder to get it out, and the less oil I have soaking around the bolt the better!

if you check the menards site, at the bottom of the product page, they have the MSDS sheets link. i bought some of the "green" greases for .99c the other day, havent opened them yet, but did look at the MSDS, and it stated vegetable oil in some, and soy in others iirc.

I used some Fluid Film for the first time at the hardware store Saturday. We had some rusted pipe fittings we needed to remove from a home-made sprinkler for a customer. I let the Fluid Film soak in for several hours, and we muscled the fittings off with 2 24" pipe wrenches.
I think I still prefer Kroil, though.

PB Blaster's nickname around here is "skunk piss" - kind of a wonderfully aromatic combination of both smells. Can't say it's far off.

One of the best I've used is a product called Free All. It's put out by a company named Gasoila.

http://www.gasoila.com/

Kroil is also very very good, and a bit cheaper if you can catch one of the deals Kano labs has going.

PB Blaster is a definite large step down from either of these two.

Fluid film is awesome for everything but penetrating. Great lube, spray it on in just stays there, works great on ratcheting load binder threads. Best battery spray I have found. Works great for cleaning rusty parts once disassembed. For penetrating kroil is the best in my book. At work I noramaly use Zep zepreserve, works great as a penetrating, light lube and even starter fluid. We tried a product by Kimball Midwest called Torq CB. The stuff smells like a strawberry starburst, you will almost want to drink it. It is kinda weird, it is a amazing penetrating oil, but will not lube anything, kinda strange. I keep a can kroil at home and work for the worst of the worst, otherwise at home I use PB. I call WD 40 weasle piss because that is about how useful it is my book. Any penetrating oil works better the longer it can sit.

Machinist Workshop magazine studied the most popular penetrating oils to see
what did the best job of removing rusted bolts by measuring the pounds of torque
required to loosen the bolt. I'm not sure just what flavor bolt they were using
that would take 516 pounds of torque but it must have been a monster.
These were the results they published:
Penetrating oil: Average load:
None...................................516 lbs.
WD-40.................................238 lbs.
PB Blaster.............................214 lbs.
Liquid Wrench........................127 lbs.
Kano Kroil..............................106 lbs.
ATF-Acetone mix......................53 lbs.
“The Auto Trans fluid- acetone mix was a "home-brew" mix of 50-50 ATF-acetone.
The home brew tested better than the commercial products in this test. Note that
Liquid Wrench is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.” :

how long did they let sit after spraying?

have had good success using kroil by applying, waiting a day, applying again and letting the liquid do the work

oh yeah, kroil by far is the best penetrating fluid i have ever used

I had a construction worker tell me years ago about using a rag wrapped around the bolt and saturating it with Coca Cola and letting it sit for a couple of hours. Maybe the acid in the Coke reacted with the rust.

Was wanting to give Kroil a try. Looks like the current website special offer is two king size (13 oz) cans for $12.00 plus $5.95 shipping. Is this a good deal?

I have always used WD40, BP Blaster and a few other products until I was told about Fluid-Film. I tried it and have gotten rid of all the other stuff I used.

The main reason I changed to Fluid-Film is I was trying to find something I could spray on my tubing dies to keep them from rusting in the shop, due to humidity and lots of damp weather, during the winter months. All the other products I used never really worked at preventing a surface coat of rust and out of desperation I tried Fluid-Film and it has worked just fine. It is a penetrating oil, just like WD40 and the other products, that works great on everything, but it also contains a rust inhibitor that does not dry out. I now use it on all my machined surfaces and rust is a thing of the past.

It is sold nationwide at John Deere stores and is also sold at some auto parts stores. I've heard that NAPA, AutoZone and a few other stores will be selling it soon.

Check out their web site and find out all the other things Fluid-film is used for. www.fluid-film.com

Fluid film is just lanolin, and it does work well as a rust inhibitor. I spray down the frame and inside body panels with it before winter.

I've tried liquid wrench, and never found that it worked that well.
WD-40 isn't that great either.
PB Blaster was my go to for quite awhile.
Kroil is the best I have found, and it also has some lubrication properties, which PB Blaster doesn't seem to have.

Napa sells Kroil, but it's a bit pricey at around $8 a can. Then again, I've had one can last me for almost 2 years. You don't need as much when it works so well.

WD40 is good for removing label adhesive and for cleaning up blow-molded cases.

WD40 can be bought by the gallon and used in pump handle sprayers.. Good and inexpensive for cleanup work, and rust prevention... It has been nicknamed "Water Displacer 40" I use allot of WD40 ,, but not for freeing a rusted bolt..

do you guys know of a spray product that can "flash freeze" something? had a few situations where several applications of PB blaster and heat didn't do anything... stuck threaded stud in a metal plate. at the time, i thought it would be cool if I could heat up the surrounding metal and then flash freeze the stud to see if it would "break free" ... is there some sort of can of liquid N2 or something one can buy for fairly cheap?

I use it as a general cleaner in the garage. Does great at cutting the grime off my maple workbench.

What is the deal with Kroil's sales agreement?
By placing this order, Purchaser certifies and warrants that all products purchased through this website will be used for industrial purposes in the manufacturing process only and not for retail sale, personal or consumer use.

I might have to brew up some of that ATF/acetone mix. Any particular type of applicator to avoid or to use with it? (i.e., will that melt plastic?)

I picked up a case of this a while back and it's good stuff.

Not sure whether the cans of pipe freeze would do the same job though, might be worth a try.
