Those CM DPs are very good quality and normal wear parts - bearings, etc are available. Even parts unique to them can be found on OWWM.com.

BTW - that's some huge valve on the bench in the 1st picture.

I have the same one in the stand-up version and it was in nowhere near that nice of condition. I bought it off Craigslist for $60 but wish I'd waited for a nicer one. Go GET this if you need a drill press.

Emailed the seller this morning, as an afterthought. He got back to me right away. Said someone was interested in it but they vanished. As if it was fate, he was off today because he was helping his mom pack for a move and the DP was there at his mom's house. I had a bite to eat and headed over. Got there and looked it over. Machine is as in good shape in person as it is in the pic. A little dirty but nothing elbow grease won't clean up. Nice guy and I told him I'd have to haggle if that was ok. I had $75 in my head. I didn't want to drop to $50. I thought that would be a little insulting considering the shape the DP was in and the rapport with the guy. It had been his grandpa's who was a mechanic and he took care of it. Then it was his Dad's for a while, then his. Like I said I wanted $75 but I didn't want to lowball just for us to split the difference. I thought for a minute, really did think. I had $80 in my front pocket ready to go and as I was opening my mouth did I decide, "How about $70?". He accepted. Then we muscled up to get it loaded.

Anyway, must have been fate I end up with it. The CL post was a few days old, the first guy flaked, meeting up went flawless and my offer was accepted. Hope it's not too good to be true! But this deal did feel a lot like my last CL tool deal where I was buying tools from a lady that were her late father's. And like I told her, I told this seller (and his mom) that the DP would be taken care of. They said it was great to have it go to a buyer who was genuinely interested in having it. Made me feel pretty good

A little dirty. I think the belt is original. It has "Craftsman" on it. But it is starting to shred here and there where it rides the pulley surface. I should replace it.

Extra pulley, what's it for? Is there a metal pulley and a wood pulley?

I didn't need a DP. I grabbed a Delta Homecraft last summer for $65 and I've been real pleased with it. I can hear DH now

Well, I think can get it unloaded if I take the base and table off so I can carry each piece. I might go do that so I can bring it in and start cleaning it up. I think another idea is to pull my truck in the garage so I can get my rolling workbench to the truck door then it's just a matter of muscling it to upright on there. I'll figure it out. If not, I'll wait until DH gets home.

As Outlaw mentioned, that extra pulley is placed at the top end of the column (ends up between motor and quill pulleys) and reduces the speed. It is pretty desirable.

Outlaw the column diameter is 2.75".

King-Seeley Corp. made those for Sears, under both Craftsman for the better drills and Dunlap TM for the economy models.

I'm assuming the distance from the center of the chuck to the column is 7-1/2 or maybe slightly better (They made a similar unit with 6-3/4" distance)

That should be their "heavy duty" unit from about 49 - 56 which became the model 100 and later was renamed the mod. 150, as you have the tilting table. In 49 it was standard, after that it became a option, and about 57 is was not available according to the catalogs. I think the only major option you don't have on that is the table lifter crank option!

Here is the catalog pages for 1949 (assuming the 7-1/2" distance making it their "15" model)

I was interested to see the "Long C" logo on the belt, making me suspect this was an early model in the 40's

ps: I agree the wires need replacing, and look hard at the wire insulation inside the motor as well. you have room in the hollow body of the main casting to add a light inside there as well, I recommend that mod as light in a garage in the shadow of the DP head is iffy at best. (I'm in process for adding a lamp, probably a 50 W halogen, on my "new" Rockwell)

Yeah the cord is in rough shape. I'll replace it. For the chuck-column distance I closed the chuck all the way and came to 7.75" at center of the jaws. So looks like the heavy duty version. And according to the flyer I beat the original deal I saw that long C on the belt and that threw me for a loop. That was an early logo. Is there any brands of belt I should stay away from or look for? Haven't bought a belt for a garage machine ever, 'except a serpentine belt on the trucks.

Ok, gotta start the oven for pizza. DH loves pizza night I'm gonna see how long it takes before he says anything. I'll pretend I sat around in my pajamas all day.

You can't go wrong with Gates belts or Goodyear. I've been buying belts recently and have been getting them from hcisupplyco on eBay....great customer service and good price.

Yep, I started not that long ago with two, my old import 16 speed, and a direct drive mini, for very high speed, (10,000 RPM +) small drills.

Then I found a deal on a 40's Atlas/Craftsman, then a small bench top Rockwell, and the latest is a floor standing Rockwell that I'm going to put a treadmill motor on, (that or a 4 speed motor I have, and use the std 4 step pulleys...)

I paid $100 but it was in nice shape and it came with a working Craftsman variable speed motor that goes from 500 to 5000 RPM and reverses too. That takes it down to 190 RPM, 1/2" and larger drills on thick metal are no problem.

I got a Gates A42 belt ordered last night. I should have waited as I hadn't grabbed the size/part for the reducer pulley yet. I just got excited. No worries, I'll just order again.

You know what's funny? Recently I had been thinking of converting my Delta DP back to benchtop (it's original config). Guess I have no choice than to have a benchtop now. Actually I saw a great little steel 2drawer cabinet (looks like a small filing cabinet) with a nice stainless top that I'm going to track down and see about setting this Cman on it. Another option is building a short stand. Putting the DPs on their own is not so much so they don't take up bench space, but since I'm a shorty, I want the DP at a slightly lower level. My benches are 37" but I'd like the DP table around that level. The Delta table sits taller than that. Gotta bring it down.

Thanks! No, no resto on this one. Least not now. I'm going to clean up the bare metal pieces and get the rust stopped so it doesn't degrade the handles and things like that. Doing a new drive belt and a power cord for sure. I'd like to pull the column out of the head and break the head down, mainly so I can clean in there. But I'm not certain I want to fight with trying to get it out though. I do need to figure out how remove/install the drive belt. I'd like to take the motor off too. Just stuff like that.

To remove your drive belt, there should be 2 rods, one on each side coming out of the motor mount that insert into the back of the head. Then you have a bolt on each side of the head that tightens against those rods. Loosen the bolts and shove the motor toward the front of the machine and that will slack the belt and you can remove the belt.

All you have to do at that point to remove the motor is pull it all the way out after the belt is of but be ready for it to get real heavy real quick.

To put new belt on, pull motor back till belt is tight and tighten bolts.

It looks to me like the motor is already pretty far forward so I hope you got the same length or longer belt.
