My grandfather gave me a tool the other day and asked me what it was. The guy put together a '40s Mercedes from boxes back in the day but for some reason was thinking this thing was a ruler.

It's an old Stanley he said was owned by his father. It's got a square wooden handle, and what looks like a knife blade on it with a 45degree angle on the end. But it's not sharpened, just a flat piece of metal. Their is a thumb release in the handle that lets this blade move out so you can put the pointed end back into the handle or pull it out away from the handle and maybe lock it into a different angle with the thumb selector.

Yup, it's a T-bevel gauge. Used to copy angles and transfer them to another work piece.

My dad has one of those... used to play with it when I was a kid. He tried telling me that it wasn't a toy... but as I grew up, I began to realize that ALL tools are toys

Whatever you want to call it, it's used to replicate angles or find angles. I've got a cheapy one but I can't remember if I've already used it. I think it would be useful for trim work around the house.

Comes in handy for woodworking, the pointed end can be used as a scribe.

I was working on a barn last year... 18' in the air. I used a T-bevel to get an angle and then handed it to my 15 year old nephew. Climbed down to see him "playing" with it .

On the up side, he learned how to use a T-bevel 18' in the air .
