Anyone have a decent set of these other than the high dollar tool truck brand. I only need these about once or twice a year and would rather not break the bank on them. Impact or nonimpact would be fine. Any good recommendations?

I have used the snap on chrome swivel and craftsman and armstrong. They all pivot to 90 degree and they was no performance difference.

Now now, I have both. Craftsman swivels and snap-on swivels, both in chrome. The snap-on swivel WAY further, no question about it. The Craftsman, while fine tools, do not go to 90 degrees in all directions. I had to take a number of mine back to better ones. Some of mine would not go past 45 degrees. There is a huge QC issue with these sockets.

Swivels do wear out, especially your most used ones. Just something to consider (warranty). I use 1/4" air ratchet with mine and that tends to chew them up. I've personally never needed a full 90* swivel, not sure what Snap-On charges for their set but the Cman up to 14mm set I picked up for $25, I think normal is around $50.

I've got the cman and snappy ones. They both work fine. The snappy ones are noticeably better quality, but you pay out the nose for that.

they work fine, but the sloppiness with the pins inspired me to buy snapons

Gray Pneumatic Impact Swivel 1/4 standard metric universals work good for low price. They are for all factors identical to the SO 1/4 metric impact universals just FYI.

yea that made me get the snap on ones. Also I broke 2 12mm cman ones replacing honda power steering pumps. Those bolts are require a good amount of torque to break off out the factory. Havn't had an issue with the snappys yet.

I got the craftsman set or sea and metric in 1/4" and 3/8" for 200. Thats probably less than the snap on 1/4"and set

I bought a set of the new carlyle brand. I haven't used them long enough to be able to post up an honest and objective review thus far. They do look very nice though

Find a set with welded pins, for a long time I had a set of Craftsman universals but the finger pinch onto ratchet/extension became the downside after normal use. I own the snappy's and have paid for themselves in the VW/Audi field.

Quick Q' if anyone knows....Is Snap-on the only brand out there with welded pins for chrome universals?

I have a set of metric chrome Gearwrench, They came with a rail and have done me well so far. I think, I bought them around the first of the year and used them about ten or so times and been very pleased. They are a life saver for under dash stuff. I have a set of chrome S&K, SAE, I bought back in 1992 and they have been great too. But a new set of Metric S&K were like a 150.00 bucks, I think the Gearwrench were somewhere around $80.00-$85.00. As far as the angle question never had a issue, If I cant get one of my swivels on the fastener I'm in trouble. But I have a large collection of extensions and a nice S&K flex ratchet which have always helped me. Good luck with your decision.

FWIW, the newer craftsman don't go to 90°, more like 75°. There was a picture posted awhile back on here showing the old vs new. It doesn't really matter to me cause you can't effectively use them at 90° anyways.

I used Craftsman swivels to take apart the exhaust manifold bolts and engine mount bolts on my 16 year old car. Spent about half that time in NY. These had never been off before.

If they survived that I feel confident they can take quite a beating.

Did anyone read the op's requirement, not break the bank, and for rare occasion use. The kd/gearwrench or the craftsmen will work just fine. I pick up the 1/4 set for 10 bucks on Clearence and spent 5 dollar on the skip, size. For 15 dollar for a full set that was a deal. And they work just June. While you will most likely not find that deal anymore. There is no reason to spend ove a 100 dollar for a set that will be rarely use.
