I would like to start a thread with what you found at pawn shops. We have one for yard sales, flea markets etc. So ill start this one off. Was at the pawn shop today and picked up a mac tools brake bleeding kit, and a hanson tap and die set, both for 100$ i got a few other little things but nothing worth posting about.

Got these at a local chain, one of my favorite places. Truck brands are under glass, but everything else is out in a bin. Stock changes daily. Depending on which employee you get, prices are REALLY good or just pretty good.

All this for ~$65. $40 was for the 4 like new pipe wrenches.

Hey Jeff, I was pretty sure you'd find this thread

The small adjustable is a Proto, looks like 706-5 or possibly -S. Too hot out to go look at the actual tool in the garage.

I couldn't believe the lead hammer, I need one for my mill and lathe. All the books describe hitting stuff with one to make it tight.

RC. thanks! They were covered in sticky black goo, like tree sap, so I wasn't sure what they would be used for. Are they quality or cheap? They look forged (the black pair) and are smooth and tight.

I'll need to exchange the C-man ratchet screwdriver. The nose keeps coming off. (yeah I know, flame away if you feel you must. Lifetime is lifetime, and it doesn't say anything about 'original owner.' The warranty was paid for when the tool was purchased.)

The Thorsen open tooth ratchet is real tight, even after Kroil. I might have to soak the head in vinegar.

I love this particular shop. I have been getting great deals there. The family places have more stuff, but think it's make of gold or something. I'm pretty sure they get emotionally attached and don't REALLY want to sell. How else could you explain the prices? This place though, their main business seems to be big screens and VCRs. Hand tools especially are a distraction. They want the stuff GONE! I recently stopped at one of their other stores and got 18.8 POUNDS of USA tools for $40. I'll post those pix when I get around to going thru the bag!

Here are some more from last week. New to me shop, family place.

I picked out a ton of nice 1/2 Proto, Cman, etc took it to the counter, and then put it all back. He started pricing every socket- $3 each Cman (=v=) $4 and $5 for the Proto, etc.

Asked him where the cheaper stuff was. He had a big rota-bin thing, so I looked thru it. Found these @ $35 for all. Even that was a little pricy, but he came down from $40.

Here are some I'll include here. They are from the Austin TX Surplus Property store.

Not a pawn shop, not an auction, and definitely not a yard sale or estate sale; but good deals none the less. And, open to anyone!

Sockets $1 each, same for drivers. Pliers $3 each.

I got a little excited and bought more than I liked in total, but you can't deny the deal...

Drivers are Wiha, Cman, klein, unmarked shock proof, and Kobalt (wouldn't normally, but I like the handle.)

Top driver in 1st pic is for Coax F connectors on cable tv systems. Bottom tool is a diamond hone.

Straight pliers are CeeTeeCo -crescent usa
CD48-c made in usa (any idea of maker?)
and Utica

Channel locks are Challenger by Proto (red)
Channelloc
and Utica 529 usa (anyone tell me what these are for?)

Adjustable is Proto.

I think I can stop buying adjustables, normal screwdrivers, and straight pliers, and just maybe channel loc style.

Here's a nice set of machinist mics I got for $175, including the wrenches and sockets shown. It was a family place, and the only one I've ever been in that had all the wrenches and sockets sorted in bins by size. There wasn't much for me to look thru in the general bin, but then I turned around a saw these beauties in a box.

The mics are Starrett, Brown and Sharpe, Lufkin, and the calipers are too.

I stopped at their second location on my way home and got a big pile of wrenches and a really neat Craftsman branded starrett. I'll post that pile next.

This was $65 for the tools. I know, I've done better, but the fever was on me!

William super wrench, proto, snap on, penens, pebble plomb, thorsen swivel head ratchet, even a hazet! The funny thing is, I was most psyched about the williams and craftsman as I thought for sure I'd be filling in my sets. Ha! Most ended up being dupes. The super wrenches cleaned up nice, but I wouldn't have bought them if I knew they were dupes, they were pretty rough.

My second stop continued.

I've never seen anything like the Craftsman protractor/ depth guage/ whatever it is. Really cool though. Also clearly marked Starrett. I don't think it's a combination, I think it came that way because the style of the head is consistent with Starrett, as well as the rule.

Anyone know for sure?

Hi Hick, I know what you mean about time. It flies by, and every time I go in a shop, I can spend an hour if they have lots of good stuff to look thru. The 'johnny come lately' stores I'm in and out in minutes.

Before GJ I almost never stopped in pawn shops. When I did, I was amazed at the high prices on what was either clearly stolen brand new, or broken old ****. Pay retail for something with an unknown use history and missing parts? No thanks! But then my eyes were opened to the wonders of old tools. Now I find it very hard to not stop if I pass one while running errands. If I have a few extra minutes I'll at least look to see if I can rule it out.

It must be exciting to be getting ready for the new school year. Busy and expensive too, I'll bet.

Maddawg, I usually put them on an adapter in my drill. Then I spin them with a soapy rag to get grease and dirt off. Followed by a scrape in the groves to get impacted grease and dirt (drywall screw, nothing fancy.) If it has nice knurling that is dirty, I spin it against a wire plumber's brush (for cleaning pipes before soldering.) If it has rust inside, I'll spin it with the plumbers brush in the socket (I have 3 sizes.) The brushes were made to remove corrosion etc and they work great. I finish by spinning it holding a scrubby pad, like 0000 steel wool equivalent. I try to do as little as possible both for time, and to preserve the factory look of the socket. I'm going for 'useable' condition, not museum quality. I do worry about doing "too much" but at the end of the day, they're sockets, not fine art!

If they are pitted, or have owners marks, I might use some 400 wet dry when I spin it. It will remove most of the owners marks to the point where they aren't noticeable. Most of the quality sockets have plenty of finish on them that removing a few thousands won't hurt. I finish with the same scrubby. I try for the same satin-y finish they usually come with. Shiny but without obvious polishing lines. Sometimes I'm too lazy and leave some evidence of the spinning. Oh well.

It sounds involved, but really it goes very fast and is super satisfying.

Finding the mics and calipers, or that Cman/ Starrett protractor, is a real rush. Stuff I need, rescued, and put back to work for pennies on the dollar of new.

BTW, I've gotten WAY behind in documenting my finds, so this was a nice catch up. Usually, I'm only stopping at one or 2 shops in a week, and I might not buy anything. That said, everything I've posted in this thread was july or august.

I rarely go to pawn shops, but a friend told me they had a pencil grinder. I looked around and also found a pipe cutter. I paid $25 for the Dotco, $20 for the Suhner and $6 for the Rigid.

Hit a few pawn shops south of the border and picked up a snap on pry bar set for 35$ and a bosh bi metal hole saw set for 78$ only 2 saws where ever used. By the way If any one has the missing pry bar from the set, let me know.

Any of you guys know of any decent pawn shops in Western NC(for tools, every other pawn shop near me has great firearms collection...)?

I've found some stuff for very cheap. Tons of high quality -- Snap-On, etc -- sockets are to be found in 25 cent bins, if your hands are strong enough (if you've ever dug through socket bins you know exactly what I'm talking about).

My best pawnshop buy so far, I got a cool little metal tool box, two Craftsman 1/4" Driver Handles, a Craftsman Crows foot, Williams socket, a Proto wrench and two pair of Craftsman Arc Joint pliers for $4.

Second pawn shop stop yielded this old Craftsman torque wrench, I hope sears will swap out, $5.

I know this is an old thread but since these are pawn shop finds and not new tools I figured I would post this here instead of the "Show your new tools" thread.

I wasn't very interested in pawn shops but my favorite second hand stores have had slim pickings lately so in order to feed my habit I started hitting the pawn shops, too. Yesterday, I was digging through the socket boxes at a local pawn shop and saw a 3/4 drive 2 inch 12 point Wright socket. Then I saw another 3/4 dr wright. And another, and another. I found 13 in all 7/8" up to 2" along with 3 extensions(3", 8" and 16") and a universal- all 3/4" drive Wright and all mint. They were all from the same set because they all had the same color paint on them. I asked the clerk to "make me a deal on them" and he said $15.00. I couldn't get my cash out fast enough. I paid and went home with my new treasure wondering where I was going to find a 3/4" drive ratchet. I hadn't seen any at the pawn shop but I had left pretty quickly after I paid for the sockets so I figured I might have overlooked the one that went with the sockets somewhere else in the store.
So.. this morning I went back to the scene of th.....uh... to the pawn shop and started searching. Lo and behold! there it was under glass with the torque wrenches. A Wright 6400-2 24" long 3/4" drive ratchet. With a price tag of 29.99. I got the clerk to unlock the case and as she did she said "these prices are all negotiable". So I offered her $20.00(for the ratchet) and she agreed.
My other pawn shop scores of the day pale in comparison but are still worthy of mention. An Indestro Select 1/2" drive ratchet with 19 Indestro Select SAE sockets. Also a Crescent 8" adjustable wrench and a SK Tools 1/2" combo wrench. $16.00 OTD The ratchet feels strong and smooth but is in need of a good clean and lube job. I only bought it because I didn't have any open gear ratchets and the price we settled on seemed decent.

Thanks. The deals I've been finding lately are forcing me to rethink my opinion of pawn shops. I thought they were all pretty close to retail on their pricing but this place clearly did not know what this set was worth.

zuk, does the protractor/depth gage base itself say Craftsman but the rule says Starrett?
A number of manufacturers made these gages and they are all pretty much identical, so the rule from one will work in another, etc. You could even buy the rule separate, with or without a hook.

edit: personally, the best deal I ever got at a pawn shop was this Starrett steel rule, # C636ME-1000, which is 1 meter or 39.25 inches long, graduated in 32nds, 64ths, mm, and 1/2 mm for $2. That particular pawn shop had a lot of machinist tools, which were priced all over the map. I got a nice pair of Scherr-Tumico 24" vernier calipers there for $60. Also got one of the tiniest ball pein hammers I have ever seen for $1 (True Temper #1504) and a NOS unused Brink & Cotton 4 inch c-clamp for $1.

They had a 0-12" set of mitutoyo mics, all .0001 reading carbide faces, with standards, for $375. They were the older dark green colored frames. Good deal but they're gone now :-(

Those pliers are what I call cannon-plug pliers. Mainly found on electrical connectors in aircraft. They have a "soft" rubber insert in the jaws for clamping down on - but not damaging - soft metal connectors.

I'd have to see the grip pattern on the handle to be sure, but the "Made in USA" forging looks like Diamond.

I found my Bridgeport at a pawn shop.

It is a 1967 Vram, step pulley head with a 42" table which is in very good condition with just one drill hit. Backlash was only 0.010" in both X & Y, with chrome ways with scraping markings still quite apparent.

Paid $900.

Sold my Chinese made table-top mill-drill for $800, so it was nearly a wash.

The automatic down feed didn't work but I easily fixed that by replacing a small pinion gear.

Cleaned it up and it's working beautifully.

I installed a VFD for running the 3-phase motor from my 1-phase power source.

The Craftsman lower I think is from about the same period. Most of the tools are mid 1980's to mid 90's. Some older, some newer. I think the pawn shop may have had this marked wrong or they were just too lazy to go through it. I offered them $100.00 for the whole thing and they countered with $120.00 OTD. It was a no brainer. The boxes and tools are a bit dirty but all is functional.

Yep, $120.00 out the door. I kept expecting someone to stop me as I was wheeling it out to my van and tell me there was a mistake and I couldn't have it for that but they helped me load it. Chumlee may get an *** chewing for this one.
When I first saw it I thought it was just an empty stack with a sticker for $149.00. That would be in line with what people are asking for boxes on CL around here. There is a Snap On lower KRA379A from 1977 on CL right now for $150.00. That box would be a good match for the KRA55 I just got but the poster didn't respond to my email so it may have sold and he didn't take down his ad.

Old post and if you haven't found out yet they are canon plug pliers. Used to help remove circular connetors, mainly in aviation (military and GA).
