Outlaw, In your 4th photo of post 1941, I can help you ID one item. You see the "V-shaped" steel item with the string wrapped around it? That is an old magnet from the magneto on a Model T Ford. If you look closely at it, you MIGHT find an old Ford script logo on it. But keep in mind that tons of them were made by the aftermarket too, so the script often isn't present.

To my knowledge, these don't have any real value, except that they are cool. Any magnetic power is usually totally gone, too.

Just 4 boxes, Outlaw?

Here was my haul for the morning.

I'm still trying to figure out what the large trunk is. I think is pre 1930s but not sure of what make of car. The guy having the sale said it might be Cadillac or Pontiac but i'm not too sure.

If there are any serious car guys on here, let me know what you think.

:rocker:

Caddy, I would need to see photos of more angles, but we might never figure out what brand of car the trunk might have been intended for. Only a small percentage of the old add-on car trunks were ever offered by the OEM specifically for one brand of car. Most of them were aftermarket, and were sold by the size/shape...kind of like sunvisors, running-board luggage racks, ratcheting jacks, bud vases, moto meters, etc.
Many trunks intended for use on old cars had backsides which were concave, in order to match the radius of big old sedan cars. More pix might help, with other views. Also, are there any makers' brand names on it or in it?

Nice haul, by the way. Wish I could find time to photo and post mine...especially from the 127 Yard Sale.

Thanks Lump, It is still a bit magnetic, but no markings at all. I think the sting was because it was last used as a recovery magnet.

I'll get a few more pics tomorrow. I'm heading out to dinner with the woman in a bit. Shes gonna help me spend a few bucks from today's earnings:D

Caddy,
Here are some photos from the old automotive trunk that I inherited from my parents, who were in the antique car club from the 1950's until their death in 1978. It is covered in long-grain leather (probably to match a common type of leather upholstery and soft tops back in the day).
TrunkleatheroldLoRez1.jpg

Some more photos will show you how the backside of this trunk has a specific concave radius, to match the contour of the rear of a sedan or open phaeton/touring car, rather than a coupe or roadster body. (The dust on there helps it show up nicely. I haven't moved it out from this old bed in the spare room for YEARS. LOL).
TrunkleatheroldLoRez4.jpg

The next photo shows you why they call it "long-grain leather." You can just see the "long-grain" pattern in the top of the lid closest to the camera; especially where it radiuses over from the top of the lid, to the side of the lid.
TrunkleatheroldLoRez3.jpg

I believe that this old trunk of mine has little or no value to anyone else but me. But it has plenty of memories...and I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon.

Well the first sale grabbed 60 Pokemon cards with my 15 year old daughter for $6 so that put me in that "best Dad" category for the morning! (and allowed me to tool shop for the rest of the morning!)

Good pickins today. Unfortunately I took my eye off a small toolbox that happened to be full of Snap on and the guy behind me grabbed all of it!!! Wasn't a total loss though because I was going through the stacked tool chests:

$35 for the lot:
DSC00056.jpg

L to R a really nice set of Proto Professional combo wrenches, assorted sockets - all Williams, Snap On, Thorsen, and Cman V including some old Cman V "Impact" which I haven't seen before. Also two very thin Blue Point (1/8 inch) wrenches. An old Cman (underline logo) pipe cutter, three Williams rachets 1/2, 3/8. 1/4, a Thorsen rachet a Corrnwell stubby and a CMan 3/8 rachet that someone dipped in gripper stuff (already cleaned and had Sears rebuild), 5 pc snap ring pier set NIB (Michigan Tools=Tiawan) and a nice set of hardly used Cman punches.

Followed by a nice 3" Reed vice and a 3 5/8 Cman (Japan) vice for $5 EACH!

DSC00071.jpg

Next Up, a set full set of KAL (Japan 1960s?) raised panel combo wrenches in roll ($6)
DSC00068.jpg

A nice Park cantilever box with tray and very little rust ($0.50)
DSC00084.jpg

4 Dewalt 5" 26451K RO sanders with boxes ($3 each - all work)
DSC00091.jpg

And a working 1G Ipod for the shop (guy didn't have a way to charge it) for $15. Already playing in my shop!

Heh. I scored (one) like new Snap On wrench at the flea market for 5 bucks. Worth $25, according to the catalog. Not worth a picture, but it made me feel pretty good. Gonna do the garage sale route next weekend, I think. You guys scope out the ads before you set out, or just cruise looking for them?

You know you can get a free replacement from Apple right? The 1G Nano's were recalled for battery problems and in return they gave you a new current-gen Nano.

I remember reading htat and as I was driving home I was thinking I should look up if this is the one . . .thank for the reminder!

Scope out ads. Only way to do it, IMHO. I even ignore most "targets of opportunity" anymore. Until you get good at reading the ads, though, you'll still find lots of candles and baby clothes. I watch the ads all week, saving the good ones, and spend a good hour or two every Friday night planning my route. A third to half of the sales I hit are still duds. Good luck!

That is the most aggressive way to do it and it works . . . but I also find lots and lots of good deals going the second day, etc. The tools I posted from this weekend were from Day #2 of the sale. I'm sure I missed some great stuff. . . but since I don't know about it, no stress and I still got great deals.

Also, people are less willing to deal at the start of Day #1. On Day #2 you can take piles of stuff, they just want it gone.

$10, but the big clamps have some ugly owners marks done with a welder. The littler Crescent wrench had a black finish, never saw one like it.

If anyone is interested, he had a shop smith in the basement he was asking $250 for but looking for offers. I don't know anything about them and there were no lights on, but I can pass on the contact info anyone wants.

I think we talked a bit about it before, but I find myself leaving a lot of oddball stuff behind. Like single sockets/wrenches. For you guys that get them, what do you do with them? Do you just end up with a drawer of mismatched stuff?

I have whole sets of mismatched tools. I don't care as long as they get the job done. I try to upgrade when I can. I look for Williams, Plomb, Proto, USA Craftsman, and P&C tools. I will buy Monkey Wards stuff if it is the good kind. SnapOn is overpriced around here but every once in a while something turns up that is affordable.

I bought a 1-5/16" pebble Plomb combination wrench a few weeks ago for $2.00 just because it was so pretty. I used it a couple of days ago to adjust a bearing tensioner on the neighbors dump transfer trailer. All my tools work, but not every day, so they don't have to match.

I've bought Vlchek, Barcalo, Bonney, Thorsen, SK, Blue Point and other tools. Anything that is good quality and fills a need. Sometimes just because it strikes my fancy. So I'm one of those that cleans up the dregs (but not the junk) at sales.

I think my taste in tools would be termed "eclectic."

I always grab mismatched sockets, wrenches, etc... I use them to complete sets over the years, or to replace lossed ones of my own, my family, or my friends. Also, the most common sized "oddballs" get used as "road tools" or junkyard box tools.

Industrial finish. real common about half of the adjustables I have are black oxide, and near half of the ones I see are also.

I used to leave odds and ends in some things, but I've been building complete sets, and am aiming for complete same brand sets in my main box sockets, so that within a set they are the same, if not from set to set, but all will be SO, Proto, Mac, SK etc. when I'm "done" I'm also building sets on vintage SK, Plvmb/Proto, and Long C Craftsman (30s-40s)

The remainder I'll sell.

I have procrastinated about going to half off Sundays, assuming all the good things would be gone. Ok, I admit I was wrong this time. I saw a 50% off last day sale that was 3/10 mile from me so I decided to drop by, I didn't see it listed sooner or I would have been there first day. Anyway, I scored some Channel Lock slip joints, a Snap On STDP52, four Husky phillips, a Husky flat and magnetic bit driver for the awesome sum of $2...!

pic00893.jpg

and since I'm headed to sears, I'm going to stop by one more sale. You guys are a bad influence!!

Nice save! That's for an M14, it's got a 4-pc cleaning rod and the "handle" is really a combination tool that takes care of field disassembly of the rifle. What you have is worth about $8-10. An M1A rifle owner will like that someday...

Picked up this Kennedy roller cabinet yesterday at an estate sale, it was full of just odds and ends, no real tools. The chest does have some rust, but other than that it is in pretty good shape
For $22 I was happy to take it off their hands

OK, I went back out to "bid" on something I saw this AM. I paid more than I wanted to, but considerably less than he was asking and I know I didn't get hurt on the deal.

5" wide, so solidly in 2nd place in the "collection" and I need to decide, 6" Paramo (Record Clone) or 5" Prentiss Bull Dog... I really can't justify having both. :eyecrazy:

Two things to compare to: I didn't have the obligatory soda can, so I used something else as an expedient, and the vise in front is a 4" Prentiss Monarch Who says size doesn't matter?

Jaws: BD=5" M=4"
Weight: BD=72 lbs, M=28 lbs (Less than half!)
Opens: BD=7", M=5-1/2
Original cost: BD=$13, M=$7

It's in great condition (other than light rust), and appears to have it's original paint.

Haul from a couple of estate sales. I almost passed on the Tap & Die set for $4.00 on condition issues (somebody used the 1/4" tap). The proto 3/4" drive was half price at twenty five cents, but I did have to take it apart and lube it so it would work.

See, there is some suckage! (But my 3/8 drive Plvmb breaker is prettier! :D )

And here's the kicker; it's full of tools!

Beautiful find Nader!

I got off to a slow start this weekend. I drove 30 mins to one garage sale saturday only to find out is was on the wrong side of a washed out bridge. Apparently the bridge has been out for weeks but the CL poster didn't bother to mention it in his listing.
I gave up on that sale and stopped by another where I found a nice Huot master drill index box. On the drive back I was concerned that I overpaid at $40 but was pleasantly surprised when I looked it up at home and found that they cost $360 new!
Then today I finally met up with a guy who had posted an obscure CL ad for misc. tools last week. He is aircraft mechanic transitioning to a new career. I only meant to buy some SO sockets from him but we ended up making a deal for his whole box. By some mysterious coincidence, we settled on the exact amount of money I had in my wallet.
Got my Snap-on sockets, some Proto, Mac, Matco, BP, Starrett, Dewalt drill bits made in Germany, a digital Mitoyo, and a nice SO drill among other things. Seller says the cart is BluePoint but i haven't had time to clean it up or find a label.

I am pretty certain there will be a Fetzer valve or two in that pile but I am not sure if I would recognize one if I saw it. It seems to be all ball bearings these days.

The last photo of the Klein stuff is included to save Jeff Moss from having to ask the question he was already typing.

I'm not a regular at garage sales, but this weekend happened to hit some in the local area, which is a small town.

I saw an ad on CL for a sale on Thursday that sounded promising, so I dropped by. There wasn't much interesting stuff, but I did pick up a 14th edition of Machinery's Handbook (from the early 1950's) in excellent conditon for $4.00 and a Craftsman belt drive ball-bearing arbor with grinding wheels and a homemade support on one side for $2.00. The arbor has the original blue paint, Craftsman badge, and decal on the back. I passed these on to a friend who has a mini-lathe but no reference books and has been intending to build a low-speed buffer. Sorry, no pics as I dropped them off on my way home.

The other item from this sale was a home-made tool box. I have been intending to pick up something to keep my hydraulic test gauges, hoses, and adapters in. They are starting to sprawl all over the shop. This one is 23" long by 12" wide by 9" deep (12" to the top of the hip roof) so there is plenty of room for the bulky stuff. Cost me $5.00, but worth it for uncluttering the shop. The workmanship is pretty good for home-made, and everything fits well and works properly.

Saturday I went out again, but that is another story. :D
