Well a good day, no, a Very goo… no,,, A GREAT day this AM!

Started with a bang, at an Estate sale, where I got a half bucket of tools a Small wood sewing carrier, and a set of cool old postcards at an almost embarrassing price (I think I dickered with people 2X all day, and this was not one of them…)

I kept hearing extremely low prices quoted to other people, (some of whom STILL wanted it for less… :wtf: ) and add things I’ve told myself to leave, I have enough of them…

OK some of the more Homeownerish type stuff out of the way:

I passed on two other Yankee Drivers that I did already have, but these two were unique, with the big one having the oversized two hand grip, and the small one being, well, small! I also got that incomplete Stanley No. 71-1/2 planer plate, missing blade and handles but cool engraving. Most of the rest is either supplies, or a new mascot for either my desk or the garage.

attachment.php

I picked quite a few good name wrenches; Thorsen, Crescent, Proto, Plomb, Vlchek (1 ea. Of the last 3)

attachment.php

And a couple more grinding wheels for the stockpile. The Slip joints are Cee Tee, and I only got those because they were 10”. I keep trying to swear off slip joints then I find either REALLY good ones, or something unique… Crescent USA made Needle Nose, a Fish eye peep hole, and some Utility knife blades.

attachment.php

The next stop was a garage sale but Felt” like an Estate sale, so I think these folks were paring down before moving to a smaller place? :dunno:
SK Ratchet set box was grabbed right away, only its Proto (Rat) Duro-Chrome, (Tee bar and Ext, and some of the sockets) only 4 of the sockets were SK :wtf:

attachment.php

then I started going through the $1, $2 and $3 baskets of tools. Most I took were from the $1 bin… and there WAS a lot more SK! I got most of a set (and a couple of dupes) in combination as well as the DOE and DBE.

attachment.php

As well as some P&C, and Proto. The hammer I got primarily because it was Indestro. :dunno: never seen a hammer by them…

attachment.php

I finally got to the HS FM, and it was a complete bust except for this one wrench; It’s marked Jaguar, and the back says Garrington. No COO but made in England at a guess for the car Mfg.

attachment.php

More to come.

I got a Text message from a friend saying there was a Craftsman DP for $20 on a street I knew well, so I looped around to look for it, but later found out they meant they had bought it… I did find the place, and got these; The punch is SO, the awl is Millers Falls, and the Dial Indicator is federal. No name on the wire brush, but I get them when I can for cheap as they are a consumable:

attachment.php

Another stop got me a complete set of ¼” drive SK sockets, driver, ext. and Rat, as well as a Starrett, 6” Vernier caliper, a Panduit Cable tie gun and an older 4” Craftsman adjustable wrench.

attachment.php

A close up of the label on the SK socket set; It has SK Dresser on it and note the Junior Johnson and Cale Yarborough:

attachment.php

The next stop was good but I had to leave a lot of damaged goods behind… the one damaged thing I did not leave behind was this Ratchet: shown next to a ½” drive Plvmb for scale: Even the Extension has pipe wrench marks on it. But was otherwise undamaged. I’ll need to rebuild the big Ratchet, or at least disassemble and clean it.

attachment.php

attachment.php

At the last stop where I bought anything was this little shop made vise. 2-1/2” wide jaws, and that’s all they are is jaws! Or its the smallest wood working vise I’ve ever seen

attachment.php

Browsing around I found another 3x5 card file drawer and emptied it hoping it would fit one of my missing slots in my 18 drawer set. The guy says he has an entire 18 drawer set, that that is just a “spare” and it was! He says; “$5 and you can have the set.” :rocker: SCORE!!!

I got out of there for $7 total! And yes the spare drawer does fit my other set! Only one to go! In fact I'm going back and asking if he has any other spares!

Hey Garage Sale Fans, did you know that a "squeegee" is a tool? And if you have two squeegee's you can say "some tools" in your garage sale ad?

On the other hand I found a Williams superwrench at a sale that advertised baby clothes and household items.

Sounds like the "tools" were the people running the GS... :wtf:

Thanks Jeff,

I just got back and he didn't have a drawer handy, but he remembers having another set that was mostly trashed, and that there should be some more floating around somewhere, so he took my name and number and said he will call if he finds one.

I like snap-on ratchet! The older handles like that are cool, my favorite #2 Philips has that style handle. Not to mention the RHFT and other Cman stuff! Great score for $10!!

I picked up something over the last week while on vacation. It's an 8 mm film carry/storage box. I thought it was a tool box based on the brown crinkle finish.

attachment.php

My goal is to clean it up ( someone scratched FILM into the top with crayon or something) and turn it into a carry box for my sons scale modeler tools and supplies.

attachment.php

I'm thinking like an old-school carpenters chest with a lower tier with 2 sliding trays resting on the lower tier. Remove one of the top trays and you can slide the remaining tray to the side to look for things in the lower tier. Hopefully what I described makes sense. I'll post the results when we are done.

attachment.php

Cheers

Jim

Nice score on the rats! I have never managed to get one of the 1/4" RHFT rats. I've got 2 of the 1/2" and 1 3/8; Two of those I bought new back in the day, the other 1/2 was recent and I got a kit from a member and put it in. From loose as a goose, to tight as a drum!

Only brought stuff home from one sale:
0901haul.jpg

From the top, SK 1/2" and JCPenney 3/8" speeders, Craftsman precision pliers set, more old safety glasses, Keencut USA scissors, and the 1965 Kansas license plate (I don't collect license plates that haven't been on my cars, but my folks are Kansans, the plate was cheap and in nice shape, so I grabbed it). I also grabbed a $0.50 imported socket set because I spotted the Diamond slip-joints and the Challenger 3/8" extension in it. Getting home, I also found: A Duro-Indestro 1/4" drive extension, Vaco 5/16" nut driver, a screwdriver with a good blade but no brand or COO, a USA combo wrench, the new-in-package Torx bits, two Truecraft USA Torx sockets, 4 Craftsman =v= 1/4" drive sockets, one Indestro 1/4" drive socket, one Proto 1/4" drive socket (what is dyna-grip?), and a set of S-K Wayne 1/4" drive sockets.

Bad news on the 1" Plvmb Rat: it needs a full rebuild kit, and at $85 for a kit, I'll do the basic cleanup prep, and park it as a project for now...

Outlaw,
Maybe I missed it, but what's the socket set in the blue case?

Otherwise, nice stuff!

You didn't miss it Flat, I did.

That kit had two sets; Indsetro (with a partial set of sockets, (not that bed looking either!) and a MUCH cheaper set of Oxwalls with a stamped (cheap ***) open gear rat. Qxwall epitomized the "how cheap can we make it" philosophy, and was if not the first one of the first to off shore way back before Wall street screwed things up generally.

Edit; ps: under all the stuff in the main compartment is a filthy dirty original ID card for the set in the box originally, which I suspect is the indestro set's

Everything I've found by Oxwall has just screamed "Cheap". The socket set case I took the goodies above out of was an Oxwall Powermaster set. All that stuff goes in the "Import socket" box.

too bad on the rebuild kit, but realistically, who would buy it to use it. That is just a big *** tool drawer status statement!!!

I went to a few garage sales Saturday. Most were a bust but one had some useful stuff. I got all this for $30.00. The vise grips are all Peterson, the crowbar is Vaughn, a Stanley tape measure, the allen wrenches are Craftsman. I am outfitting another tool kit, so I am picking up items as I find them.

The two items with the square black handles are a SnapOn radiator hose tool and as SnapOn brake shoe tool for 3/4 ton pickups. The tire inflator is a Dill and I like the aluminum seal driver kit in the box. Like Outlaw, I am picking up hammer handles if they are cheap.

On Friday I went to a sale that advertised "Vintage Tools". It had a few interesting items. There was a tool chest in the corner and I asked if it was for sale. The man said he would sell it and help load it for $100..00. I already had $1.00 worth of stuff set aside, so we settled on $105.00. He had to clear it with his wife, who took my cash. After I started to move the cabinet to my pickup, the man came up and said that his wife wanted to cancel the sale because her daughter wanted the cabinet. I told him it was too late, since she had already taken my money. I got cold stares the whole time I was loading up.

The boxes are Kennedy, a #526 top and a #276 bottom. The bottom has a lot more wear and tear than the top. I didn't get the keys. I'll show photos of the bottom cabinet contents here.

There were 75 Allen Wrenches in one drawer of the bottom cabinet, as large as 3/4"! There was a set of Craftsman V 1/2" drive sockets 7/16 to 1-1/4 missing 1/2, 13/16, and 7/8. A set of Thorsen 3/8 drive deep sockets 3/8-3/4", and regular sockets of various US makes 3/8-3/4. Many mixed 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, and 3/4 drive sockets. Three 1/2 breaker bars (two Craftsman V and a P&C), a Proto 3.8 breaker bar, a SnapOn drag link socket, two Craftsman V 1/2 drive universals, and a 1/2 Craftsman V 6" extension. The 3/8 drive accessories included a SK stubby exension, a 6" New Britan extension, a 10" Armstrong extension, and a 12" Walden extension. There was a 1/4 Proto screwdriver/extension and 9 USA-made sockets. There were two 3/4 drive sockets, a Proto 3/4 hex and an early Craftsman (SK mfg.) 1-1/8 12-pt..Including a about a dozen asian sockets, there were exactly 50 sockets in the box.

In the back corner of the lower compartment I found a pair of Kraueter "Giant Nippers" ub 6-inch size, and a head for an 8 oz. Plumb ball pein hammer that has been "field modified" into a cross pein.

There were quite a number of punches and chisels, P&C, Proto, Starrett, and a large cape chisel marked "Jessop and Sons Cast Steel."

I found some parts that fit my little Lincoln MIG welder, a hose and five tips for .024 to .032 wire.

There was even a little KAL 4" adjustable wrench in like-new condition, as well as a brand new pair of lineman's gloves. There is an interesting clamp tool marked "Imperial Brass Mfg. Co. Chicago, Ill." that has what looks like a cutter in the center, but the jaws don't meet. :headscrat What looks like an allen wrench in one drawer is really a hex driver for an Indestro #300. Also a new 0-200 psi pressure gauge.

Notice the difference between the two Craftsman V breaker bars. One is built much lighter and has dimple detents on the head. The other is beefier and has cross-slots instead of dimples for the detents. I assume the heavier bar is later production.

I had found and set aside a bunch of number stamps, which was the extra $10.00. These include a full set of 1/2" high numbers and a second set missing only the 0. There are some extras and also a few 3/8" and 5/16" stamps. I really like the old-time look of these stamps. :D

I'll report the contents of the top box next. :bounce:

The top box (Kennedy #526) from Friday's sale had some interesting items. One drawer had a variety of HSS tool bits from 1/4" up to 1/2". It also had the large taps: 3 ea. 1" NC, 6 ea. 3/4" NC and one 5/8" NC, all HSS quality USA manufacturers. Another drawer had 7 ea. 1/2" NC, 1 ea. 7.16" NC, 5 ea. 3/8" NC, 2 ea. 5/16" NC and two 1/4" NC taps, again US, HSS, and quality. It also had 7 threading dies. Another drawer had 8 drill chuck keys and 4 pipe taps from 1/8" NPT to 3/4" NPT.

Some other highlights are a Starrett size D pin vise, Helios thread gauge, a large corkscrew for removing valve packing and a smaller, flexible version of the corkscrew tool. A couple of Starrett pocket-size decimal equivilent and tap drill charts that will come in handy were in the top bin, along with a plumb bob (38401 U.S.A.), a thermometer like air conditioning techs use, and a tractor hitch pin with lynch pin.

The top bin shows some wear, but at least the PO put some green felt in most of the drawers to protect the factory felt. :)

Both the chests have the cover panels, so all I have to do is replace the locks if I want to be able to lock them.

Tire gauge
Nice gauge, Jeremy. I have been in the antique car hobby since I was a toddler, riding around in my parents' rumble seat in the 1950's. So I have actually owned quite a few of those tire gauges. Folks seem to like them for shadow boxes, wall displays, or just to lie around the garage to add a little classic atmosphere.

As for value, you see them all the time offered for serious money, but not too many really sell, EXCEPT for the gauges which have car manufacturer names on them. The best one I ever owned had the word, "Pierce" boldly on the side, with an arrow through the word. This of course was the logo for the Pierce-Arrow motorcar, and that gauge sold on eBay for nearly $100. On the other hand, when you find one with "Goodyear" etc, on them, those too are in demand.

Nice find!

I was out of town Friday and Saturday. Went to a couple garage sales early this morning, but the rain started around 9am so most sales packed up quickly.

Did manage to save a tool bin full of stuff, though. Includes five saws (two hacksaws, two coping, and one finger saw), 3 putty knives, 1 chalk line, 1 plumbing brush tool, 2 oil filter wrenches, 1 trowel, 1 TINY vise (I listed it in the vise thread), 1 Budd lug nut wrench, 7 misc wrenches (5 DOE, 2 combos), 1 slip-joint pliers, 1 needlenose, 1 wire cutting pliers, 9 screwdrivers, 1 razor knife, 1 chipping hammer, 2 3/8" ratchets (1 is Craftsman USA), 3 sockets (2 are Cman), 1 small die cutting wrench, and a handfull of other small tools and supplies. Total investment was $10. Most of the tools were USA made.

Also stopped at a second garage sale - only one tool, a Master Mechanic miter saw, sans box, for $4. Not a great deal, but I'm all about saving things, and I didn't have a miter saw yet.

Some interesting finds.....

I dug up a few things this weekend and a couple of them have me puzzled. Pictured below is a cool old B&D metal circular saw case that I just couldn't pass up at $2. Also found some nice pieces of vintage SO, Plumb & Proto, a metric tap & die set, some old hex drive wrenches, a Bluepoint flywheel truer, a 6" Brown & Sharpe ruler, a small Reechet ratchet, CM V-code & older, a big Kennedy box and a couple of vises. The pipe wrench and salad fork are Proto Los Angeles. The 3/8 ratchet is Proto with the forward-reverse selector on the drive side of the head. The old wrench stack is stamped 1893 and the 3 way socket tool is a Walden Tomahawk 620.

I will detail the interesting stuff in following posts and look forward to your comments. Happy hunting everyone.

Some interesting finds.....the details

What do you think of this CM stuff?

1 & 2. First off is a double offset box wrench (15/16" & 1"). It has no letter code and no part number.

3 & 4. The stubby phillips must be fairly old as well showing no part number either. Can anybody date these?

5,6 & 7. Also shown is a Swedish made "Nozzle Remover". What trade uses these?

Some interesting finds.....more details

1. The drive on the end of this SO breaker bar is set at 45 degrees to the handle. First time I have ever seen that in any brand.

2. Is this a Snap-on letter opener? (S-9583)

3. What is this Plomb 6507 used for? It reminds me a Mason's tool for pointing mortar between bricks.

4 & 5. This SO Ford/Mercury headbolt socket is stamped "Not Guar". Does that mean "not guaranteed" and were many of their tools stamped this way?

6 & 7. Is this old wrench just an early "universal wrench" or did it have a special purpose?

Re: Some interesting finds.....the details

What do you think of this CM stuff?

1 & 2. First off is a double offset box wrench (15/16" & 1"). It has no letter code and no part number.

3 & 4. The stubby phillips must be fairly old as well showing no part number either. Can anybody date these?

5,6 & 7. Also shown is a Swedish made "Nozzle Remover". What trade uses these?

1&2 - Probably early production RP, but still Moore Drop Forge. RP started about '46 or so.

Probably the same deal on 3 & 4, but I don't know who the Mfg. was for those.

5,6 & 7 - :dunno:

Re: Some interesting finds.....more details

I could be wrong but I believe that Plomb 6507 is used for changing valve guides on old flathead fords. They had a split valve guide that had to be removed with the valve and you needed a special tool to do it.

1. any sign of fracturing on the twisted drive? :dunno:

4 & 5. Yes. any mil contract tools were not guaranteed.

6 & 7. "Masterench" is the usual marking by Heller Brothers, and SB Patented 7-5-27 and 4-14-25. I have 4 of these in different sizes. One is a pipe wrench. They actually work quite well, at least as well as a crescent wrench for fasteners. Not so good for metal forming as a good crescent...

I carry one of mine in my camping "fuel box" a Larger military ammo can with a small amount of spare fuel (white gas and prop) as well as bulk prop tank adapters, a tank gauge etc. The wrench is used for the prop connections.

Rusty Musket first post: 5, 6, & 7 Sweedish Nozzle Remover is for working on oil furnace burners. It removes the nozzle from the burner "flame thrower" without twisting on the supporting tubing. The support has a larger hex than the nozzle.

RM second post: #3 is a valve guide knocker for Ford engines. It could be for a Model A, B, flathead V-8, flathead 6, or 4-cyl. tractor engine, depending on the Plomb number. Hard to tell just by looking, and I don't have a catalog to refer to.

#4 & 5 is not really a headbolt wrench. It is a tubing socket where the tube bends out of the way pretty close to the nut. It isn't guaranteed because it is likely to be abused.

Today I hit an annual flea market. Didn't find many tools, but here's what I brought home:
0902haul.jpg

On the right is a Mustang 1/2" drive speeder, below are: Bernard pliers of unknown function, and three pairs of Bell System pliers: Klein 6" cutters, what appear to be needlenose/wire stripping Klein pliers (#KS21257?), and Crescent 5" cutters. Above all that is the Kraeuter socket set. Incomplete, but it does have that unique ratchet with the SK guts.
