I was in Home Depot yesterday
They have pallets of Dewalt compact 18volt drills on sale for $99.99. They come with 2 batteries and they are $89 off.

At the moment I am in California for the month. I will be going back to Indiana after my son's birthday.

Just though I would pass on the great sale.

I saw that the other day, and wish I had the money to spend. Worth it just for the batteries alone.

Re: Home Depot bargan

I wonder if DeWalt is clearing out their regular drills in favor of the brushless ones to come. Is there an impact driver that would work with the batteries? I have a cheapie B&D drill that has seen better days.

I am guessing these are NiCad? If so are they the XRP batteries or just the plain 18volts?

Re: Home Depot bargan

FYI those drills are on sale for $99 EVERY YEAR. Not that they're bad, but they're designed to sell at $99. During off-peak times they're $120 and $149 or so.

My guess is that HD is going to advertise them as part of a Labor Day sale.

Those are an alright drill, just don't push them to hard. They are more of a homeowner type drill.

Re: Home Depot bargan

That's, um, a little disconcerting. The case, layout, batteries and charger look virtually identical to my 18V B&D that I bought from HD 5 or so years ago, on sale for $89.

So, at risk of going wildly OT, and with apologies to the OP for hijacking his thread, is there a common manufacturer then?

Dewalt owns B&D or the other way around.

I know dewalt is part of Stanley. When you see the dewalt branded hand tools at HD they are similar to Stanley.

The drill is made in Mexico, batteries in Japan, charger in thailand, and case in USA. The black and decker power tools i see around are 100% china.

Those are 1/2 size batteries also. They last half as long as a regular battery and weigh half as much.

If you're looking for a drill, also consider Home Depot's current sale on the Ridgid 18V Li-Ion drill and impact driver. Two tools, two batteries and charger for $179 ($10 less if you pay online and pick it up or have it shipped for free to you -- there's a code you can Google).

Oh, and you get free batteries for life, too.

Speaking of Dewalt I saw that Lowes now has Dewalt Impact sockets both sets and single stock. I can post pics if wanted.

IIRC they were chinese.

Re: Home Depot bargan

You're both right.

Stanley merged with Black & Decker in 2010. The corporate umbrella is now called Stanley Black & Decker. Everything Black & Decker owned, and everything Stanley owned, is now owned by Stanley Black & Decker.

True, but I also read somewhere that B&D still licenses the B&D name (or has long term licenses still in effect - not clear) to other companies that produce merchandise with the B&D badge. Apparently this includes tools, household appliances, and other lower end consumer goods. Personally, outside of my cloths iron, I can't think of anything B&D that I own. Hard to believe that this is the same Black & Decker that designed and built the drills used to core into the surface of the moon back in the 1970's. Here's hoping that Stanley Black & Decker can return to a bit of that heritage.

No clearance. Through the years Home Depot has run a lot of great specials.
Years ago I picked up 3 Synco nail guns in a blow mold case for $200. Great price. They have a lot of good deals if you need them.

I went back and picked up 4 of the drills for Christmas presents. I am almost done with my C shopping. In my famly I 8 birthdays between the kids and grand kids that are coming up before Christmans pluss the C presents. Then right after we have 2 more birthdays. If I don't get an early start I get cought. I buy all year long. I just gave one sone and his wife a grandfather clock I picked up. I did not have the room to keep it so I called them up to come and get it.

Black and decker now owns Dewalt, Delta, Proter Cable and a host of other companies.

Jet owns Wilton machinery and owns the wilton Vice.
Wilton is top of the line machiner. They also own Powermatic.

Nope.. Dewalt is owned by Black and Decker which bouth out the old Dewalt radial arm saw for the brand name. They no longer make the saw here in the US and they don't sell it here but they do sell it in other parts of the world. They are in Australia under another brand name. I looked into it years ago
There are a couple of men making the old origonal radial arm saws here in the US but they are very expensive and no one really usese them any moer other than to cut framilng lumber. The sliding compounds don't get out of wack when you move them around and are much lighter and more accurate.

Times do change.

Not quite.

Stanley Black & Decker (from the merger of The Stanley Works and Black & Decker Corp. in 2010) owns DeWalt and Porter-Cable. They no longer own Delta.

Stanley Black & Decker sold Delta International Machinery Corp. to Chang Type Industrial Co., Ltd., a Taiwanese company, who changed the name to Delta Power Equipment Co. in 2011.

The sale contract for Delta allowed Chang Type to continue to use Stanley Black & Decker's parts and service network (DeWalt Servicenet) as the retail outlet for Delta Power Equipment Co. replacement parts and repair services.

Jet does not own Wilton. Walter Meier Group (formerly known as WMH), a Swiss multinational corporation, owns Jet (purchased in 1988), Powermatic (purchased in 1999), and Wilton (purchased in 2002).

For a few years after Walter Meier purchased Wilton in 2002, the Jet and Wilton lines were combined into one catalog, which may be what makes you think Jet owns Wilton, but it had nothing to do with Jet's ownership of anything, and the Jet and Wilton catalogs are now separate again.

These are value pack drills. They are entry-level all-plastic housings, two speed gearboxes, a decent amount of power but nothing like the top-of-the-line models. The batteries are 1.8AH NiCd, where the XRP cells are 2.4AH. This drill is basically a model that has been around for about ten years or so. If you could use an extra or don't want to spend a lot of money, it's a decent deal. The fitted hard case and 1 hour charger (which will charge the 1.8AH cells in quite a bit less time) are nice perks.

This. The batteries may not be the XRPs but when you get 2 batteries and a charger and the drill out the door for $95 its not bad

The charger alone sells for $40

FWIW, I bought this same set on Black Friday, 2011. At the time I was on my second Craftsman 19v cordless drill in seven years and both of my replacement batteries had died. Figuring I was in for around $50-$75 for new batteries alone, I took the plunge on a good name. I'm only a homeowner, but an active one at that, and use mine semi-regularly. This Dewalt drill has way more power than the POS Craftsman it replaced. As for price, I figure that even if I buy one every five years or so, how bad can that possibly be? I don't yet know enough about the various brands to know which is good, better, or best, but for me to spend $200 and up on a drill is a little crazy. While this may not be the best choice for those whose livelihood depends on it, it's a great choice for moderate use.
