I probably should have been more clear. Whats it made out of?
Come to think of it the threads been entertaining as is.![]()

How am I supposed to know what a chunk of metal is from over the internet from a few pictures?
How am I suppose to know how your suppose to know?
Is it rusty? Probably a steel of some sort.
No rust
Does it make sparks like steel when you grind it? Then it's probably steel of some sort.
I have that on a video, but in print its better. Not sure my eyesite is good
enough but my kids would be.
What to make with it? Whatever you want to make out of a chunk of some unknown probably steel piece that might have broken off of an industrial feed auger at the quarry or gravel place somewhere.
LOL

It's a chunk of metal sitting on top of a waste basket. The waste basket has a paint stirring stick, a paint brush, a hammer, a small piece of plywood, and some various wrappers and garbage in it.
There. Happy to help.
Use the metal for something that needs metal.

A couple of bucks at the scrap yard.
Dan
That isn't just any hammer, either.
It's a Bacon hammer!
I wonder why someone threw out a perfectly good bacon hammer?

That must be the wifes trashcan, because no upstanding male would throw out a perfectly good Bacon Hammer.

And better yet what can I make out of it?
Found it in my drain rock. Heavy sucker.
It is the wear plate from the auger flights in a sand screw or coarse material washer, per dwp99
Many aggregate outfits now use heavy urethane in this same application.
These machines are elevated at one end, material goes in the bottom, water is dumped in, fine crud washes out the bottom as the heavier rocks are elevated to the top.
Likely, its hard than heck- it basically spins around in rocks and sand all day.
I believe that auger piece is a ni-hard casting. High alloy cast iron. It is a wear item, very hard/brittle. Scrap it.
