Unusual Snap on Breaker Bar

I found this old Snap on breaker bar recently and thought it was unusual, at least to me. I searched the collecting snap on website and could not find this breaker bar and I also did a Google search with no luck.

What makes it unusual to me is it has a handle like I have never seen, and it has a hole in the bottom of the handle instead of through it. From the date code it appears to be from 1950. Anyone seen one like this before and if so what is the hole in the bottom for? Thanks.

Could have been modified for a cheater bar. Or maybe for standing it up on a nail or pin for storage.

I've never seen a SO breaker bar like that or nut spinner like they called them back then. I've seen the type like you mentioned with the hole thru the handle and then a 1/2" sq. drive broached in the end like in this catalog link but never won the auction where the item was:
http://www.collectingsnapon.com/catalogs/catalogs.php?loggedin=0&catalogPage=1090
These have a NS-** item number--the one you have only has one letter--is it 1/2" drive? My guess is it is some kind of special item. Snapmom will hopefully see this thread and have an idea.

Thanks for the replies and yes it is a 1/2 inch drive breaker. From my research I saw others with this type of hole in the handle but could not find one with this part number.

The "N" part no. is usually special order tools, there are lots of N tools for railroad tools.
The hole at the end is odd, how deep is it?

Snapmom,

Thanks for the reply. The hole is approximately 1" deep and the breaker bar is about 18 3/4" long.

I've got a Snappy breaker like that, but it also has a hole bored side-to-side at the end, so it can be used as a long T-handle, with a piece of rod through it.

I have an old SK breaker with a 1/2-drive square broached into the end of the handle, and just used it at the junkyard last weekend as a long extension after busting the bolt lose.

I have seen old breaker bars with the hole through the handle but not just in the end. It would make sense to me if it did have a square hole and could be used as you described it, but this is round.

I had one of those sk's too. It went missing after I had to leave my tools in storage (in care of relatives) sniff sniff

Maybe the round hole is to insert over the end of a t-bar so you can use the flex as leverage. You could slide the t-bar handle all to one side and put the flex on the short end to get a really long t-bar handle.

This may help. Scroll down a bit and you will see a breaker bar like the one you have.

odelay, here's mine. Handle shape is similar to yours, but there's a hole through mine. And the hole in the end is square so it could be used as an extension. Unfortunately, somewhere in the past 75 years someone broke it - probably trying to use an extension for extra leverage.

I've got one with the round hole, same as in first post. Mine is I think 1941, and has a long, carefully applied etched owner's mark that I think indicates a Naval Air station in NJ...I need to go home and see if there's anything unusual in the part # since it appears to be a former gov employee predating the G and E period...pre-war but in the middle of a huge military buildup to war.

I have a number like that. I have a couple of I think Indestro 3/8, one with 3/8 female and one with 3/8 male at the handle end...not sure what they were thinking of...Maybe one of those Title IX rules??
