My local HF is about 40 minutes away, which is a good thing because for a weekend hobbyist, I don't need any more excuses to buy tools. Yesterday on the way to the grocery store I passed an empty strip mall with a big banner "HF coming soon" - great, just great.:willy_nil

I dunno, for me it's a convenience but hardly a wallet drain. It's closer than my local sears, has a better selection of stuff, but it's still a last resort for me when it comes to tools (because more often than not, I'm disappointed in the quality - box of nitrile gloves was the last disappointment). I pass by there everyday on the way home from work, and never stop in. Only time I stop in is on a weekend when I need something to finish a job.

I introduced my neighbor to HFT and the first month or two he was going bananas buying this or that. Now 6 months later, he has found peace, and only stops in once every 6 weeks and mostly as a diversion instead of any real intent to buy something.

Not everything they carry is outstanding and have never been in one. A few things mail order or have my neighbor pick something up when he goes downstate. Had him get set of metric impact swivels recently and a timing light which I have managed to get by without for years, wanted one for a little project, 28 bucks with advance. Bought a ir thermometer a while back, decent and a digital caliper that worked well for several years till someone fukked it up, better than messing up a hi dollar unit, I should have had him snag a new one of those too.

I wouldn't mind seeing a city near me get a HF, one of our towns has a Kmart and so far they have managed to beat back a Walmart which is kind of a shot to their own foot, people drive out of town to shop. Kmart seeds some discontent fronting a couple locals but they would be the real losers in this scheme.

There's one going up 2 minutes from my office - La Mirada CA right on the 5 fwy.

I'm pretty excited, every though I need absolutely nothing at the moment.

I'd rather a trailer park or rendering plant, might be time to think about putting the house on the market and getting out of the area before the prices plummet.

There's one about two miles out of the way on my trip home. I stop in for the "free" flashlights a lot. They make great hand outs to the Boy Scouts when I go camping with them and I don't care if I get them back or not.

Good source for zip ties, plastic gloves, taurps, tie downs, .... I also pick up the free screwdrivers to give away to friends that don't have any tools. That way my wife doesn't go shopping in my toolbox for her friends (yeah that ended up in a BIG fight). I had to go buy her a cheap set of HF pliers and one of the "free" screwdriver sets. Told her that she could "borrow" anything she wanted out of the garage box but it needed to go right back in. Not get put in the kitchen drawer...

Seriously, they put up a HF by my old house and the area went to **** shortly after (although I don't think HF was the cause, but you never know).

I used to get excited about going to HF but not much anymore. I guess it's when I learned that I cold get much better tools for similar money if you look in certain places or have a little patience. I still go there every once and a while mostly for consumables. I still use their jack stands and torque wrenches but that's about it.

About the same here, I go there to pick up certain thing like a mover's dolley or chip brushes.
