To start , I didn't think it would be this tough to find a garage door with a torsion stle spring ( I want to use a lift master 3800) Home Depot said it would be a special order 2-3 week wait .

I found one at lowes , but seeing the display models the quality seemed poor to me but I'm no expert , the brand lowes sells is reliabilt .

Anyone have this brand and want to share a review ?

I've got one Reliabilt single 9X7 uninsulated on my small shop. It's an okay door for the price. It goes up and down like it should. I installed two of the same on my son's garage. He's happy with them.... should be... dad paid for and installed them.

You have to determine the manufacturer. Lowes sells several different lines from several manufacturers. I believe all garage doors, from Lowes or HD, will be "Special Order"...it is no big deal.

FWIW consider buying a good quality door with a foam core and steel facing on the inside. Better insulation value, and also better sound insulation as well.

Call around. Local door installers frequently beat the boxes on pricee, quality and quality of installation.

Agreed,

Local company beat the HD price by a huge margin, for what I think are better doors (Haas with 2" poly insulation vs. HD budget line). No problems selling to me to DIY and they were happy to give me advice as well, so I installed them myself (including one with a follow-the-roof track). They said if I get hung up to call and they'd be happy to do the install, and quoted me a fixed price on that. Couldn't believe the good service I got from them.

If I were you, I'd call around though. Another door installer who was not as DIY friendly quoted me almost $600 more for the identical doors. I think they really just didn't want to sell the door without install. But even with install included, they were way above the place I bought from.

Well I got a decent price from a local guy , I'd normally prefer them over a big box store . Problem is the brands he deals with don't come with any instructions at all.

And I'm not going to lie , I'm a mechanic by trade but I've only installed one garage door before and it wasn't a torsion style . I need some sort of guide line and etc for the install .

Getting it professionally installed is just out of the question, my budget went out the door so fast during my build . I need to do this myself .

Also , since this post Home Depot called me back said they can special order the door for me with a torsion spring for a additional 50$ , and their wait time is 2-3 week vs 4 weeks at lowes .

I'm honestly just surprised torsion springs aren't as common as you'd expect .

Lots of install info available online. Mine didn't have instructions- just a box of parts, but it's mostly the same for all doors...

http://www.clopaydoor.com/installation-manuals.aspx

http://ddmgaragedoors.com/diy-instructions/#residential

Also check videos on YouTube...

I rarely see doors around here without torsion springs. Almost never- does it vary around the country as to most popular style?

I thought torsion was the norm aswell, must be cause people in New England always choose the cheaper extension style spring ? So stores just don't carry them ?

Clopay is the brand that Home Depot sells which I've decided to buy , it's a 3 week wait . But there's lots of installation details them

Agree with barks,I would rather have the local guy do the install.
Much easier to deal with if there ever is a problem.
I have an Amarr 16'x8' with the Liftmaster 3800 and Battery Back up.

The coplays are pretty junky. They are not hard to put up. Use an impact gun to drive all the screws. Be extra careful with the springs, dangerous just like a=arms on old cars.

I don't know of much that Lowes/HD sells that isn't junk. It's very much "disposable/Consumer" grade. Call some of the local door companies. You might be surprised at their pricing and quality.

Ordered 2 clopays today .

I got a price qoute from 2 local guys for doors and install that most would say were reasonable , but like I said above my build budget is out the door and I refuse to take out a loan .

Hopefully the clopays last for a few years , alot of people seem happy with them .

I dont know what it is about Lowes and Home Depot and their doors. The local HD here sells a 9x7 door for $244. I told them that I needed three 9x8 doors and they told me that they would have to special order them and that the price would jump to over $600 a door. WTH? Almost 3 times the price just to add 1 foot? I was thinking that for that price I should just buy an extra 9x7 door (4 total) and use it for parts to extend the other three 9x7s. Then I called around and found a local guy that would sell and install an Ararr 9x8 door for $500. Still wondering what I should do. I think the "Special Order" door prices are a joke.

Ya I wasn't to happy with the special order pricing , but I wanted the torsion style door so I could put a 3800 . I could of saved a lot by just going with regular openers .

Should have waited - if possible - for the next HD special door and window sale. They regularly run either 10% or 15% off all special order doors and windows. Garage doors from HD are all special order. My Clopay no option torsion spring 16x7 door was $490 delivered to the house. I had an 8x7 Clopay on the last shop - 12 years, zero problems with the door. That one used springs and pulleys though. Both are DIY installs.

There's a lot of guys that will disagree with you, including me. I just bought a 10'x12' Ideal 5 Star door (built by Clopay) and it's one of the best quality doors available.

Maybe they have a "budget" line as well? Don't know.

X2

I used their coachman doors on my new garage.... Not budget and they seemed to be very well made.

Mine is the cheapest plain white unit HD sells. Looks to be the same quality as the doors on all the houses around here, all of which are 100K plus houses. All the parts look like standard door parts, came with all hardware and was pretty easy to put up. Doesn't seem flimsy to me. Heck, the weekend I put it up the wind was blowing 30+ right at it. It was stacked up in the opening with no rails and braced with a couple of spare 2x4s.
