Being a technogeek.....I like the idea......

But the engineer in me says....just something else to break.

As cheap as the chargers are...and how many computers we have at the house....I'll pass..

Plus....too low to the ground....the only way I would use one is if it was at counter top level

BTW....nice pic of the 747I

Not enough ports if you consider how many devices you might have to charge. I use a 7 port hub to charge my devices. 2 ipads, 2 iPhones, 2 blackberry's and one droid.

They're pretty expensive considering you can get a regular plug-in one for 99 cents on eBay.

Personally, I wouldn't want one. It leaves you with only one outlet, and where I plug my phone in, the nightstand is right against the outlet, so I need a flat plug.

I have one, it has 2 outlets and 2 USB connectors. The issue with the one I have is that it requires a deeper box than normal, and hope you don't have any other wires in there...it's a very tight fit.
More recently I have seen smaller versions that have a single outlet and one USB connector, and they are 'normal' size.

These outlets work great.

They do burn power all the time but not a huge amount.

I wonder if sometime in the future all houses will have these standard?

They have these things at the airport. People still plug in those little 120v cubes to then charge their ipods, an inch away from an existing USB thinger.

I like the premise though. You can get one of those gooseneck USB reading lights from dollar tree and have a directional night light.

Otherwise what's the parasitic draw of a transformer sitting in your wall? And when it starts humming in fifteen years, will it drive you crazy?

IMHO, if you are using USB in 15 years you are old and stuck in your ways and/or quit buying new equipment.

You make a good point. USB has been around for more than 15 years already (1996 I think) so the chances of it sticking for 15 more aren't good.

I have a spot in kitchen where everyone charges phones and it is handy to have a built in 4 outlet usb charger

you need to be careful with some of them as they only have 700 milli amp charging capability and they take forever to charge a dead ipad

It can charge (up to 2.1 amp) all of the apple products including the ipad

the link is

http://currentwerks.com/

they also make some that retain the 110 v outlets

Hate to be contrary, but:
I am certain that the USB charger buit into a wall outlet will have a high risk of leading power surges ( read overvoltages at lightning strikes) into your newfangled and expensive toy that you are charging. The smoke will leak out and the insurance company will be unhappy.
If you live in a lightning prone environment, the safer way is to charge it off of a laptop which is not plugged in , but running on its battery.

Catalog Number TR7740
Wiring Method Side Wire
USB Rating 700mA 5V/DC
Receptacle Rating 15A 125V NEMA 5-15R
Product Colors Colors may vary per product. For ordering, include Cat No. followed by the color code: A (Almond), BK (Black), LA (Light Almond), V (Ivory), W (White).

It's a good device but only 700 milliamperes hard to charge a dead iPad with that need a 2.1 amp rating

When will we see three or four of these USB outlets on the dash of the car so we don't need to bring the charger along all the time! Just need to have the right cable.

You need to expand your thinking. I put one in my bathroom. I have a long counter with 2 sinks and 3 outlets. I put one in the middle outlet and it is great for charging the phones, I pods and things. You can put them anywhre there is a counter. I would not want one on the floor. I also put one in the kitchen. We have a desk built in as part of the kitchen by the breakfast room. I put one there where the laptop is pluged in. We also use that desk counter for charging. Then I went and put one in the guest bathroom. There is noting to go wrong. They are well made.

They also make power strips to charge the USB divices. It has nothing to do with the charges and how cheap they are. ???????
I even installed one out in my shop above one of the built in counters.

I am an old fart but you sound like you live in the dark ages. LOL

I installed one of those Cooper chargers for my wife. I put it on an outlet over the kitchen counter and got a bracket to hold the phone as well. She loves it.

I wanted to do the SAME thing in the kitchen..but all the dang outlets there are GFCI...We have a spot where the only thing on the counter is the Coffee maker and thats where we both charge our phones anyways...trust me, I've thought about just swapping it out anyways.

Are you saying every outlet is an actual GFCI outlet or every outlet is GFCI protected off of a GFCI ooutlet? You may have to do some wire switching at an outlet or two but you should be able to use one of the USB style outlets with one outlet in it and still have it GFCI protected.

It shouldn't matter if they are GFCI.... get a triple gang existing work electrical box, add the USB outlet inline after the GFCI one, and then that Leviton bracket you have the advantage of all 3.

Yes, every outlet in the kitchen cabinet area is a GFCI itself..I know "Downstream" outlets are protected, but problem is I dont know which ones are downstream cause I'm not the one that wired it.

If I were re-modeling, yep...I'd do exactly that...Cant say I want these outlets bad enough to "remodel" kitchen wiring...next thing I know my wife will have me fixing this, changing that....while I'm at it...LOL
