Nice older Wilton and their quality was never better. If its a barginning point, its not near the vise they make today. (length, height, throat, weight, etc.) Some guys think they are sitting on a pot of gold with 1st generation Wiltons. Also, check the jaw supports on the other side and make sure one isn't cracked off. Also, if the jaws are smooth, finding new ones can also be a barginning point. If its under 4" pay accordingly. Its a nice Chicago and depending solely on condition. If you get it right, you will make money on the flip, providing you dress it up.

Thanks, I appreciate the help. I'm trading a 1950s 22" ride cymbal for it. If it fits comfortably on my bench, I'll keep it. Too big, I'll flip it. Either way, I'm going to clean it up. I'd like to find an original lockdown handle.

Picked up a Columbian 5" multi-purpose vise today. It was in a good shape, mounted on a 2" hitch insert, weights about 50 lbs. It looks very similar to Wilton's 66669 multi-purpose vise. They maybe are related...any idea?
Unfortunately, the handle is bent slightly, still usable. Any suggestion of how to correct it, or shall I bother at all?
just picked up this same vise for $30. trying to find out more about it. could not find a model number except a couple of stamps that are s3 and 74. the few similar vises i found all have different numbers. need new jaw inserts.

My first Wiltons. Going to sell one. Got these today with an old workbench. Cost me $25 + one cymbal + my morning.
Wilton on the left is from 1974, 4" jaws. It has a couple issues. Wilton on the right is 40s/50s with 4.5" jaws. Original paint, and part of the decal is still there.

Here is an old Prentiss vise I got... I wish it was bigger (don't we all), but I really wanted one with the fancy "Prentiss Vise Co." on the side. There was just gobs of paint, rust, and everything else on this vise.

It's missing the swivel pin (going to make one this week hopefully), but everything else was solid. Also the swivel jaw wouldn't swivel completely in one direction, it kept binding up. I used some marking paint and found where it was rubbing and polished the surfaces to get it to slide smooth (pics of that in next post)... Also the casting wasn't perfectly aligned where the lip is on the bottom (the part that buts up on the corner of a work bench), so I milled it straight and even (was surprised how soft it was to mill, compared to modern steel that I'm used to). Polished lots of other surfaces that needed it. Made a couple brass washers to put between the dynamic jaw and the handle (both sides)...
Painted Gloss Black (Rustoleum Enamel rattle can)
Overall besides all the little dents and dings this vise is solid. Zero slop and slides in and out like butter.
Will post a pic of the taper pin when finished.
EDIT - Forgot to mention, I *did* try the oven cleaner method. It actually works halfway decent, you just have to let it sit for several hours (overnight would probably be the best). There was just soooo much crud, I had to wash and re-apply 3 times and that got most of it off. In the end I got impatient and tossed it in the blasting cabinet...

Nice. After seeing some of the vises here that are left unpainted, I really like the look myself. I'd clean it up a bit more, go with with the paste wax & call it a day.
Pretty wild electrolux cord. Still remember our vacuum cleaner from many years ago.

Picked up this no name 4" vise off of Craigslist yesterday for $40. Jaw faces are nice and sharp and the rest of the vise shows no damage. It has an oil hole on the other side of the dynamic jaw. It looks like a Hollands with this base design but the oil hole is a little Reed like. It's a quality piece from probably the 40's as a guess. I'll post more pics later.

Nothing exciting, just an old Record #3 that I picked up at a local auction awhile back. It has 4 inch brass jaws, weighs 41.5 pounds. Following the garage journal guideline of $2/lb for a finished vises I am planning to post on Craigslist soon.

Yes, different from most I've seen. I think that "better" is a term that is hard to agree upon, with vises. It's nice that it has such wide jaws for many applications, and it's nice that the jaws seem to be lighter weight than some of the big old monsters we find in Europe and the USA. But "Better" or "Worse" depends on your own specific needs.
The bottom line is, if it is well suited for YOUR personal needs, then it is terrific! And that is "better" enough for me.

The vise is 8" so the jaws are 200mm and the opening is 200mm too..
******* big to me to be honest.. but always wanted one big.. so i asked my gf for one as birthday gift and here is.
The small one is a 3".. no big deal
