My wife thinks I am a bit OCD when I do this, but I like to cover my sports car even when it is in the garage.

CA is kind of a dusty place and I hate having to wash the car when it hasn't been driven much.

Do any of you do this?

I used to when I had my 911. It was restored and in great condition. I live in SoCal near a freeway and the dust & dirt kicked up is constant. Now my boat & Jetskis are covered though they're inside.

Car covers in the garage are a good idea. Not only will it keep the dust off, but also helps to protect the car against bug droppings and accidental scratches by puttering around in the garage.

That said, make sure you keep the inside of the cover clean. Do not toss it on the floor letting dirt get on it. Also, never cover a dirty car. Make sure there is no grit on the paint to scratch the car as you put the cover on.

Many classic car owners use king sized bead sheets. Easy to put on, it will drap over the car nicely, and can be washed periodically to reduce the chances of scratching from picked up dirt. You do not need a dadicated cover for rain protection, which often is a stiffer fabric more prone to scratching the paint.

yep. I keep my 68 Mustang convertible tucked away in the garage with a quality cover over her at all times.

I used to do it too. When you have a black car, a light grey cover, and horribly inadequate light, it has the added benefit of really brightening up the garage.

The reason I don't do it now is that I found mouse-y footprints on the fender UNDER the cover. Now I need to make certain that the offenders are gone before providing another nice comfy home for them.

If you live in a mouse-prone area, be sure to check regularly just in case.

I put one on my factory five roadster...It is a cotton cover so it will breath. I got it at Advanced auto. I put it on and raise my 4 post lift to the ceiling and say good night for the winter...
The next time it is started will be in the spring.. I don't dry start it durring the winter.
The good part about the cotton is sometimes it gets warm in the winter and it causes condensation on any cold surface weather it be the floor or a car body.. With cotton it breaths and doesn't hold moisture.

What do you guys do with the cover when you take the car out? I haven't found a good method yet.

I like the bed sheet idea though. My Chevelle is in the garage and definitely doesn't need a heavy outdoor car cover.

IKEA bag hanging on a nail. Alternatively, a net sack to let it breathe.

I ball up the cover and rest it on one of these in the garage,

I have the mustang covered all the time and the dust gets right through it. I have placed a piece of plastic over the car cover and it has sat like that for years.

I've got a cover for my 1934 Coupe, but I only use it when I'm at staying at motels during out-of-town car show weekends. At home, I get a lot of enjoyment seeing the car whenever I'm in the garage.

My grandfather kept his best cars in big inflatable bubbles in his garage. These were perfect 1930s Packards/Duesenbergs/etc

My OEM Honda cover (damn nice cover too, much higher quality then I thought it would be) came with a storage bag that I place in my rear hatch when the cover is off.

Careful if you live in a humid area. I covered my motorcycle in storage in Houston and got surface rust on the chrome.

Actually...in relative terms...it is dry here.....especially where the OP lives....the dust he is talking about is all the stuff that blows in from the desert.

For a car that sits in the garage 2 or more nights at a time without being moved? Car cover is a good idea.

Added benifit.....if it's a really nice car.....nosy people walking by don't see what you have....

I don't cover in the garage anymore, its a waste of time.

I used to cover my Dino because it would sit in the garage for a few weeks at a time, but you can't (or at least should NOT) put a car cover on a dirty car so that means you have to wash the car after any drive no matter how short before you put it in the garage.

Yes, it can protect the car a little from minor bumps but its not worth washing the car each and every time before you put it in the garage. But then again, the Dino is uncovered in the garage and the Ferrari is uncovered out in the driveway for the last 4 months so maybe I am not a clean car ocd kind of guy, just a driver.

My wife thought I was nuts when I asked for a cover, for well, my cover.

I have nice model specific cover for the Mustang that I put on right after I wash it and put it in the garage. I have a generic cover that I place over the nice cover in case I'm cutting or grinding metal so the metal dust doesn't make it through to the paint. I can was the generic cover as often as needed.

California Car Covers make great covers and many different levels of protection, had one on my 61" Convertible T-bird when I owned it, yes in the garage, really helped keep it clean.

Store it in a plastic bin when not in use.

A quick detailer spray and a plush microfiber works well, as long as the car isn't too dirty.

If you leave a Ferrari out in the elements for long periods of time I would say your a user, not a driver. If it's too much trouble for you to take proper care of, then I will gladly take it off your hands, free of charge even.

That's what I've been doing but on my workbench. I just felt like it was dumb to just toss the cover somewhere when I take it off. I like the idea of putting it in a laundry bag.

Use a California Car Duster. If you have a car worth covering in the garage then it won't get that dirty on a day of driving. A simple five minute dusting job will remove any harmful dust or dirt and help protect the car.
