I noticed a Reed 4C Vise went for over $1350.00 on Ebay. Matchless Antiques was the seller. Had alot of patina on it but was in very good condition. That is alot of money for a vise and the buyer still had to pay shipping on 170 lbs. Thought it was interesting.
Really would like to obtain a 4C,..but I cannot afford one.

Is that particular Reed model especially sought after or is it just a matter of old heavy quality vise = high $$?

Matchlessantiques is the vendor whom I saw at the 2011 Quad State Blacksmith show, in Troy, Ohio. He had a giant vise on his trailer then, and I inquired about it. Here is a photo of that vise from Sept 2011 (Notice my eyeglasses resting on it to give you a size reference):

This thing had no visible name on it, but it was HUGE. So I asked his price, but he refused to set one, telling me that he had brought it along solely to generate interest in it, prior to listing it on eBay. He gave me a business card with his eBay seller ID on it, and suggested I watch for it in a week or two. Sure as can be, it showed up, and ended up bringing $1,700!

His eBay photos reveal LOTS of anvils, vises, and other heavy old equipment packed into his shop.

Wow...I might be tempted to list my recently acquired 4C. Matchless Antiques gets top dollar for most of what they sell. I would probably settle for half that....

Here's some PDFs of Reeds, the 1C,2C,3C,4C models are on the first page...

There was an awesome 2C at an auction locally... It was in the same condition as the Matchlessantiques or BETTER... It was used in a plastics lab, so not exactly a lot of wear and tear.... I finally had to cut the cord and let the other guy win it... I think he ended up paying around $800 for the lot which included the vise.

Another guy found a 4C in pretty good shape up in Dallas not too long ago, he paid $250 for it... That was a major suckage award for him... It's probably 10-20 pages back on this thread.

Just took delivery of this Athol Vise today. Has 7" jaws and weighs about 190 lbs. I may just clean and wire brush this old hog as the patina fits it. Found it on Ebay and purchased it from a nice fellow in MI.

Yeah, that's C.BRAXMAIER here on GJ you got it from. He posted pics of that several pages back... I was wanting to buy that vise but you snagged it from under me. I was asking him about shipping and such before I did a BIN... lol... Oh well, always another vise...

I'm sure someone will post the Parker 4X they got off eBay too from Autopts soon...

Well to be fair though I did not 'snag' it. That could be understood to infer I did something sinister. Which is not the case. It had a Buy It Now price. I sent him a message asking if he would work with me on shipping as it was a local pick up only. He agreed and was kind enough to work with me. I did the Buy It Now. A vise that large for $450 was a fair price in my opinion. And like you said there is always another on. I just wish I could have been able to afford that Reed 4C that was listed.

Help!! this “Mr Wilton 9400 HD”. As you can see I am missing a major part. My owner (garage journal member gregthor) says he is going to sell off all my parts on eBay because he can’t find a replacement static jaw for me. And then I won’t exist!! Please help my owner find a 9400 static jaw before my demise!!! I have been a good vise since 1965!! The story is when my owner’s friend picked me up at an auction, I and the big steel bench I was attached to fell off the fork truck. See photo below of what happened to my static jaw. Of course my owner thinks I was cracked before the auction and his friend didn’t have time to look me over…I don't remember but I know I worked fine even with the cracks. If any of the fellow garage journal guys and gals have a wilton 9400 static jaw laying around please let my owner know!! Thanks Mr Wilton 9400HD

You might be the luckiest person alive! I happen to have the back half of a wilton vise laying around my shop, i just don't remember if its a 3.5 or 4" I'll find out later tonight or tomorrow and keep you posted. Hopefully it will work for you.

That is why I save broken vice pieces that are still usable because you just never know, or when I die my wife can cash them in for scrap

I found an older 4C in Erie for $175. It has the forge welded jaws, and pear shaped screw ball. It doesn't have a swivel base, but I am planning to put it on a pedestal when I find a heavy enough base. Later I found a 1C at the flea market for $50. It was weld spattered up, so I cleaned it up and painted it. I flipped the jaw plates smooth side out, and have been using it a lot lately.

Found a Charles Parker Trojan 706... 5" Jaws, weighs a little over 80 lbs I think... Haven't put it on the scale yet... Rock solid! This is going to be a fun one to restore... Very beefy!

As far as I know you can add a swivel to any Wilton bullet.

Jason those look like good vises. I missed one by a couple minutes a few weeks ago at a flea mkt. A guy was rolling it around when i got there, and bought it for $50... I didn't know Parker had anything to do with them?

There isn't much info, what you find on the net leads you back to this forum... lol... Basically from what I read, Chas Parker made the "Trojan" line more beefier (note how the jaws are much lower than a typical Parker and more like other brands) to compete with the other companies that I guess were considered more stout. I sprayed it down with oven cleaner and I'm letting it do its thing. Not sure what color I want to paint it. The previous seemed a semi-gloss or flat black.

I just can't believe how much bigger it is compared to my 4-1/2" Ridgid... We are only talking a 1/2" wider jaws but it's got to be another 30lbs or more.

Will be taking more pics once it's all disassembled, and of course re-painted and all shiny...

I took a look this afternoon and its a 9350 so its a half inch smaller then what you are looking for. Sorry i couldn't help you out.

The cheapest hammerless double they made was the Trojan, so it was definitely one they used.

I have a Reed 4C that is in excellent shape that I may have to test the waters with as well. At least here in the DFW area there may enough interest for a local pickup. I certainly would not have those kind of expectations in price, but it would be nice!

Vise install..

Forgive me if it's some trick of perspective, but it really looks like you've mounted that vice too far back. Most vices are made so you can bolt them down & have the face of the back jaw a little out from the edge of the bench, so you can hold long items vertically.

But looking in this photo we can see that one side is free to work on pieces vertically...
